Joburg pothole repair app launched

I have absolutely no faith that this will make any difference whatsoever. It doesn't matter how clever the front end is if there are still incompetents that are supposed to fix things.

Rather than waste money and time on apps the city should have fired JRA and started again with people who actual know what customer service means.

The lights on Sandton and Rivonia have been out for a month. The amount of money wasted on those outsurance pointsmen could have paid for plenty of clever people with a screwdriver and some insulation tape.

Whats new? Security is an after thought

When you see guys with the Wifi-Pineapple at the Mugg & Bean or at the airport, then you know that phishing is going well. Only the most security conscious person would be able to spot this. Any case, rookie mistake to provide webservices without HTTPS.

This should be made available nationally not just for Joburg

Agreed! The town I am visiting at the moment, has so many potholes all over the show, entering the town is the worst! Signs shown do not exceed 100 KM straight after that sign a huge pothole unavoidable.. The town doesn't have R50 million+ to repair all the potholes!

Hope they fix this before the iOS app release. The roads in Broadacres look like swiss cheese.

I managed to push them hard to get Lombardy and the back roads from Broadacres into Fourways (and Roos) sorted out - took me since January. I doubt that the app will resolve the issue, as the JRA needs to dramatically increase their staff and budget to attend to the issues. Case in point: the fixed a reported pothole and would have had to drive through two substantially bigger ones to get there, but didn't fix those - puzzled by this.

/waits for "We've been h4ck3d press release"

It is really a blatant obvious thing. I suppose it is now also illegal to run a proxy in your environment and be aware that banking apps and other applications on your mobile device do not use HTTPS. Any developer not using HTTPS and hashing passwords should really not be in this industry

TBH the app feels rushed (at least Android, I suppose Windows and iOS will look / function similar). I do find it interesting that Azure was chosen for the cloudservices and if Microsoft had any involvement in this it is quite puzzling that no-one bothered using SSL. I do see that they will have issues with content hosting on jra.cloudapp.net - but that is really someone else's problem. (I suggest you register with a freemail address and a password which is not used anywhere else and I would avoid registering any other personal details - just saying).

Why reinvent the wheel, we should all use this. I think its pretty cool and I use it for my neighbourhood, Muizenberg but it will work nationally...

Didn't know about that - do the municipalities actually participate or is this just community driven? If the later, what's the point as there is no recourse and it doesn't look like JRA or CoJ really care about bad publicity - plenty of negativity on their social platforms about service delivery.

I hope the servers are geared up for overload the next time there is serious rain :-)

Been using this great service for years now, great for getting streetlights fixed, but have used it to get a wastebin installed on the street corner (and subsequently added to the emptying list), sinkholes fixed, poles painted etc.

On the whole, the various departments respond well, street lighting respond the best, the pole painting was the worst, the Mobilitate website works well and allows geotagging, photo uploading of supporting evidence. The complaint is categoried, prioritised and forwarded with tracking to the relevant department for action. You can follow up and corroborate evidence, affect priorities, chase up etc. Sometime complaints are closed prematurely. They can be reopenened if the job is not done to your satisfaction.

Their main limitation is that the public doesn't know about it, more advertising is required. Otherwise a fine example of the Western Cape leading in terms of service delivery.

When I try to sign up for the first time, it says "Invalid User Credentials"!

EDIT: OK, I guess it doesn't like any spaces in your surname.

BlackBerry 10 devices with OS10.2.1 can download the app from here

Sorry - I know you mean good, but it would be better if Intervate would repackage it properly for BB10 and submit to BlackBerry World. The APK is signed via 1mobile which would be concerning to me...
