R9 280x 3gb vs GTX 760 OC 4gb

Another comparrison on which i need some advice.

I dont want to be caught up in the AMD versus Nvidia debate... I just need to know which one will perform better coupled with an i5 4670K..

Ill be playing Battlefield 4 mostly...
Any advise will be appreciated...

On paper the R9 280x is better but more VRAM makes a whole lot of a difference and is "better" in a way.

So its your choice.

If you are going to the 760, be sure to get EVGA as the sub vendor.
 
You should be comparing the 280x to the 770. The performance difference between the 770 and 280x is almost non-existent, but the 760 is a lower tier compared to the 280x.

Yeah, 280 is better.
 
280x, the extra 1GB won't make a difference at 1920x1080 plus it's a faster card and for BF4 AMD is working hard on optimizing Mantle even more

Is there really a difference in quality between the different name brands... MSI, Gigabyte, Asus, EVGA??

Furthermore, how do you guys rate Powercolor... I see the R9 280x OC is close to a grand cheaper on wootware??
 
Get the powercolor, its a grand cheaper and performs the same and has a good 2 year warranty.
 
I currently have an R9 290 but can vouch for the MSI R9 280x as a very solid card. BF4 at 133% resolution (1920x1080 --> ~2560x1440) uses just over 2GB at peak on my card in DX11 so 3GB is still more than sufficient. And yes the 280x is much better for comparison with a 770 than the 760.
 
Any recomendations on memory... I see some memory CL9, CL10 and CL11... Does it actually matter..
Im looking at Corsair 8gb 1600mhz for gaming purposes...
 
8GB is a good sweet spot for gaming purposes. Load times and performance get quite degraded with anything less than 6GB in Battlefield (even BF3). The performance of RAM is increased with higher MHz and lower timings (CL number). CL9 1600MHz is perfectly fine, but Battlefield 4 has shown some decent improvements with RAM frequency so 1866MHz at CL10 may be better than 1600 @CL9 for example, depending on budget.

Have you checked for the leaking oil?
 
Final Question re Motherboards...

Are the ASRock motherboards anygood... Takealot has the Asrock Z97 Pro4 board for R1500, the other makes go for over 2 grand...

I had the MSI card for a short while (few weeks) as part of a deal with a friend before I procured the Asus R9 290. I didn't come across any oil leakage problems and my friend who still has the card hasn't noticed anything either. But yeah have heard some things, though my MSI 570 that I upgraded from was flawless as well.

Regarding the ASrock boards, I have no experience with them, but I've noticed much of their "feature list" is usually gimmicks (like OC'ing locked processors to the same level they can be unlocked to anyway, and "dehumidifier" technology...?). Though as far as quality goes I don't think they're a problem. Asus fanboy here haha.

The R9 280X by far, especially when you start to pile on effects like Global Illumination and oversampling. If you play Skyrim with mods regularly, the 4GB GTX760 might earn its keep because a lot of those mods can push the VRAM over 3GB of usage on 1080p.

Its also useful for games which use a crapload of VRAM at 1080p and for storing higher-quality textures (all the Skyrim mods) or for games that have a really retarded way of loading textures, as in the case of Watch Dogs which always will load a texture twice. At 2560 x 1440 on low settings and 2x MSAA, the game consumes over 2GB of VRAM.

I wouldn't put any emphasis on Mantle here, OP has an overclockable Haswell Core i5. It might aid in frame variance issues, but not much beyond that for now.

Completely fine, very few brands can match their features and connectivity for the same price. If you want a bigger brand name, Gigabyte's GA-Z97-D3H is the nearest competitor to the Z97 Pro4.

They are fine, very good value for money.
