So after my 5th modem is on the blink I'm looking for a replacement.

Requirements:

- Excellent WIFI coverage
- Media Streaming
- Wireless ac
- Not TP-Link brand
- Regular Firmware updates
- Not more than R3000

18 devices will be connected to this router/modem daily (wired and wireless)

In an ideal situation I want something that will eliminate the stuttering of streaming from Plex and good all round WIFI coverage

Double storey house - Concrete slab
My current router's range barely reaches the bottom floor and I had to have a second access point installed.

Thanks

I got the N300 version of that ASUS router from Esquire for about R850. Excellent coverage in the home and the QOS system makes connecting from multiple devices a breeze. Never had an issue with it freezing up or shutting down.

Tested with any streaming local media?

Yes. N300 can be dodgy for 1080p content but 720p streams perfectly over WiFi. If you are spending that much, you rather look for an AC router.

Consider getting a separate ADSL Modem and router, too. While you may pay slightly more, the range of WAN routers (i.e. non-ADSL) is greater than ADSL routers, and future upgrades (e.g. VDSL) don't have to disrupt everything that you have purchased already. A decent ADSL modem (e.g. 2500U) is about R200, and can even be sacrificial when in comes to lightning, etc.

Thanks will look into that

Get a top of the range TP-Link - colleague bought one, he can only say good things about it - Going to set you back approx R1200 but it WORKS!

I'm really considering this one.

Anyone have the Archer D7? Really want to try out the dual band and wireless ac

Can't find any Asus ADSL modem+ routers with wireless ac - most are routers only which I don't want

Bought the Archer D7 and it's absolutely pathetic. I advise anyone looking at it to stay far far away.

Disconnects often - none of my wireless ac devices could connect to the 5GHz band (iPad,Macbook Air, S4, Note 3)
2.4GHz band was also very slow.

Luckily I'm getting a full refund.

I should of just trusted my gut feeling and stayed away from TP-Link and their Cr@p

So back to the hunting....
