Ford Ecosport rivals, budget of R250k?

So, I am eyeing one of the Titanium models of the Ford Ecosport (probably the 1.5 TDCI for best fuel consumption).

The main factors I am considering are:
- safety
- ride height (yeah, I'll claim it's solely for the benefit of the wife, but I'm a short(ish) guy myself :o)
- reasonable comfort
- fuel efficiency
- cool features (but this may be an overreaction to driving a tazz for over 11 years :D, so it doesn't feature very high on the priority list)

Also, the 4 year warranty + 2 year extendable warranty is quite attractive.

What are the main rivals to this vehicle, within budget, and meeting my requirements? Are there better buys out there?
 
Yes, thank you, I shall consider that. I notice it has 12% more minimum boot space (useful), sat nav (great!) and 4x4 abilities (which I'm not particularly interested in).
In the ecosport's favour: there are some nice features like cruise control, climate control, very adjustable driver seating and steering wheel (reach and rake, iirc), leather seats, has a couple more airbags, and, with Ford's 2 year (purchasable - I don't know the cost) extended warranty, it has a total 6 year warranty vs the Duster's 5.



However, coming from a lowly tazz that doesn't even have air conditioning, most of those features may be far more awesome on paper than what they are in reality! :D
I simply don't know.

I found this review.
Pros: Lots of bang for your buck: good engine, decent fuel consumption, reasonable features and great size.
Cons: That breaking issue is concerning. And rattling plastics is indicative of poor build quality. Cheap interior. And what's this thing about the steering pulling to the left in the lower gears?
 
Why not look an an X-trail or the new qashqai. People tend to skip those 2 and go straight to ford, huyndai, kia. The new qashqai is super luxurious inside and great features which you are looking for.
 
Very under powered engine for the segment(look at the power outputs of the Juke and duster).

It has a 160kph top speed for a 1.3 ton vehicle. 0-100 kph is listed at 14.5, a Kia picanto 1.1 is listed at 15.2, Kia picanto 1.3 is listed at 12 s

The engine are specced to meet a specific price point.

But this is a negative from a safety point of view. Up here in gauteng, you need a responsive car to merge into traffic both safely and quickly. This is just slow.

And it is not about whether you drive fast or not. It is just about the relative speed of the other cars on the road.

Yip, I recently relocated from (6 years in) Gauteng, where the right lane is reserved for people doing a minimum of 130km/h :D
I'm in Cape Town now, where the locals believe anything more than 30 km one way requires pad kos!

Anyway, the lack of power is not too much of an issue for the my intended usage.

AFAIK they are sold out and offering demos now. OP, maybe look at buying used or demo, you will save a huge amount. With the new Qashqai release, the old model will be much cheaper - and depreciation on a demo will be less as a knock has already been taken
 
Nothing beats an Ecosport i.t.o. value for money (i might be biased - i drive one :) )
