I was just wondering how many of you have done these DIY CCTV installations at your house?
Is it worth it to get a Kit like this??

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/1581..._with_Internet_remote_viewing.html#bidhistory

Whats the video quality like day/night and does the remote viewing on your phone actually work ?
Do you need to buy extra power cables and extension wires and and or is everything you need in the box?

Did the diy thing. Bought some stuff of BoB but mostly the quality is 60 to 70 % of what it should be. Example cameras say 650Tvl but are actually about 400Tvl.
It's fairly easy to set up and do.

I bought the exact same unit, but 4 cameras only.

During the day it's not too bad, I would rate the video quality a 7/10.

During the night, infrared turns on and you see grayscale video, quality is about 4/10

Remote viewing works great, you get a small cd with which is loaded with android/iOS apps for remote viewing.

Everything you need is in the box already :)

here are some pics, day and night

thanks guys this is exactly the type of info I was after.
For the price I think its worth it and from those Images that @Blaaislaai posted it looks like you can easily make out a face.

So now for the installation: is there enough cabling in that kit if you need a camera far away from the DVR and do you need like a wall plug near the camera to power them ?

You get 20m cable per camera with, the video wire and power wire is combined as one which splits at the ends. With the DVR's own power cable, you get another power supply with with 4 power connectors for the cameras, in your case it might be 8.

So luckily no need for a power socket for every individual camera :)

Thanks for the info, one more question.

If you connect the DVR to your ADSL router via the LAN cable can you view the footage on you tablet/phone via the local network or do you have to connect to that app you talk about over the internet.

And if it's not too much trouble can you post a pic of the tablet/phone quality of the footage ?

You can view it from any device on your local network yes, via the app or the web browser of the device. However it's much move convienent using the app that comes with.

I have setup a DNS on my router to allow myself to connect from work to view the cameras, it can also be done via your mobile device.

Sure, here is a pic using the mobile app:

You can drag the bottom cameras to the top for a bigger view

Thanks boet you are a legend .....

The Kguard units will be better quality.

If you need more cable it is freely available on BoB.

I've gone through various cameras over the years as my home cctv system evolved. I have a big box of cameras and **** that has now become obselete.

My advice:

1. Go with megapixel IP camera if you can afford it. It really is a different world, but expensive.
2. When going analog, stick with CCD cameras. I have never been happy with CMOS cameras.

Next thing you know the thieves start stealing these expensive cameras.

I'm looking at buying one of these cheap sets off BoB, is yours still working?
