Hi All

Looking for suggestion for suggestions and your experience with wireless isp's in Cape Town.
I've sent out a few mails to some of them, including sonic wireless.

Would just like to know what your experience with them is and the quality of their bandwidth.

Thanks.

Hey,

where about's do you stay? I've been with Amobia for 3 years now and have had no problems really.

I'm in the Northern Suburbs abouts. Just spoke to Darrel from Amobia, very helpful and friendly man :).
He'll be organizing a LOS test, hopefully I'm covered.

I emailed sonic wireless this morning and then sent another mail earlier. They responded to my first email almost immediately and sent me sign up forms, without answering most of my questions. Haven't heard back from them.

Amobia has also suggested that they are able to prioritize gaming ports for me and I nearly said "shut up and take my money".

Yup you just have to give them the ip and they add it to an exclusion list.

Sounds good though:)

Careful Maxum, Amobia might be good for normal web browsing and Youtube, maybe even some http downloads, but just keep in mind of their p2p throttling and high latency spikes for gaming. You can end up phoning these guys the whole weekend to "check" your line out to fix the latency and the next few days the issue repeats itself.

Just a heads up.

They do throttle P2P during the day, and depending on network load, haven't really experienced any lag but then again I don't play games:)

Thanks for the heads up Piet :), much appreciated. The established LOS at my premises. I'll definitely be inquiring about lag spikes during gaming before continuing the process.

That said, it can't be much worse than what I currently get with Telkom. I don't mind the occasional ping spike in-game, as long a it's stable for the most part. I'm not too concerned about p2p throttling as well. I don't mind doing that kind of thing after hours.

If I do get everything setup and installed, I'll be updating this thread with a lot of feedback on how their bandwidth performs.

Hey,

Is the condition there really like this that you are unable to use connections..

I'm also looking for am ADSL alternative - Northern subs/Brackenfell area. Copper cables got stolen and telkom refuses to replace them. Is Amobia the best alternative? I need a decent broadband connection for gaming and netflix.

Oh btw, I *****ing hate telkom

I've heard very good things about sprintnet, unfortunately, their installation and package costs are a bit too high for me.
Amobia are offering 2mb uncapped at R500, I believe installation is in the region of R1500 if I'm not mistaken.

I sent Amobia an email on Monday and there hasn't been any response since then.
No mail sent to me after their team confirmed LOS either. Guess I'll need to call.

Would be great to hear from people currently with Amobia.
Ditto on the Telkom sentiment.

Yeah, Sprintnet is definitely way too expensive. My budget is about R1000 p/m. I also sent Amobia a mail Yesterday. Still waiting for a response.

They're slow on the email front, very slow. Try giving them a call.

Almost 3 weeks with no response to any of my mails to amobia. It's alarming and at this point I feel that I'm asking for trouble by signing up with a company that operates likes. Time to look at other options.

Strongly voiced my concerns about amobia's lack of service this morning and they replied (finally).
To say that there's no LOS at my premises.
This after they had a team at my home, confirming and assuring me that there is in fact LOS. So three weeks later and they tell me now that there isn't....

It's a pity bitco aren't set up in CT, is there a single wisp or isp in cpt that have decent customer service? And a decent product?

On 30 October I made the comment that we are quite strong in the norther suburbs.

Did you speak to anyone at our offices?

Did we do a site survey?

Are you in our coverage area?
