Eskom started with scheduled blackouts on Friday afternoon, the power utility said.

"Load shedding will continue until 8pm tonight," it said in a short power update.

"We appeal to customers to immediately switch off geysers, pool pumps, air conditioning and unnecessary lights and appliances to reduce the pressure on the system."

Eskom said it would release a more detailed statement later on Friday.

Eskom's load-shedding schedules were available for its direct customers on its website. Customers could also contact their call centre for additional information.

On Thursday, Eskom said the power system was severely constrained due to unforeseen technical problems at power stations.

"Should we experience further technical problems, we may need to implement load-shedding," Eskom said at the time.

Earlier this month a coal storage silo at the Majuba power station in Mpumalanga collapsed, resulting in widespread power cuts. The silo held more than 10,000 tons of coal and affected coal supplies to all six units at the power station.

An investigation into the collapsed silo is underway.

Not happy. What is the "unforeseen technical problems"????? Numpties not being able to plan and then blaming somebody else for their incompetence? Yet they receive fat salaries?

Yep, we failed to plan therefore its unforeseen.

I received an sms from the alarm company warning of a low battery as I was heading out of town. Guess I know why now. :o

Hmmm...

Eskom mum about crack in silo: Eskom has declined to comment on what it called rumours of a crack in one of the remaining coal storage silos at its Majuba power station in Mpumalanga. (Source: News24 Live feed)

Can the outlying farmers close to the borders please tear down the pylons that ferry out electricity across to neighboring states.
Enough is enough. This has to stop.

Last time I checked the main line to Botswana was down - they are only getting a small amount from other crossings. And the entire country's consumption is only 500 MW. The smelters in Richards Bay use more than 1.6 GW.

Our exports are not the problem.
