Streets across Sandton will be closed off for the entire month of October, while the City of Johannesburg hosts the world’s second ever ‘EcoMobility World Festival and Exhibition’– a month-long car-free district event.

The lanes which will be closed will instead be used for public transport, walking, cycling and other forms of eco-mobility during the Transport Month, executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Parks Tau announced.

Maude Street, West Street, Rivonia Road, Fredman Drive, Alice Lane and Gwen Lane will all be affected, but delegates at the recent Mayoral Breakfast were assured that a traffic impact assessment has indicated that these plans are doable and will not lead to ‘chaos’ in Sandton.

The City of Johannesburg said that there are major changes to transport patterns envisaged for Sandton in the long term, and the Festival will serve as a glimpse of a future where public transport takes precedence and there is infrastructure in place to encourage walking and cycling. “We want to show residents and visitors that an eco-mobile future is possible and that public transport, walking and cycling can be accessible, safe, attractive and cool!” explained Mayor Tau.

Sandton has seen its number of incoming commuters increase at 3.4% per annum – a number likely to increase at 3% per annum at the current rate. An estimated 85 797 vehicles travel in and out of the District every morning between 06h00 and 10h00, while 89 217 travel in and out during the 15h00 – 19h00 peak period. The fear is that there is not enough road space if the growth continues in the same way, with the high level of private cars.

By 2017, the District will roll out Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit lanes and services, cycle lanes, public transport lanes, wider sidewalks, park and ride facilities, bike share schemes, corporate travel plans as well as Metrobus restructuring and recapitalisation, in an effort to promote the use of public transport and to accommodate a high level of accessibility for people entering the business hub.

The Mayor assured that the City will provide alternative transport in and out of Sandton during the Festival.

F u c king lunacy. How are people in that area supposed to get to work?

Good Luck to all those working in that vicinity. Going to be ****ing crazy

One of the dumbest things I have ever read.

It will be nearly impossible for anyone to get anywhere in Sandton.

walk. bicycle. oh....wait....the city's public transport will be used. Does anybody else see the real reason for this crap?

Sure. From all the outlying areas like randburg?

Where is all this public transport capacity going to magically appear from?

can you imagine the stress it will put on other nearby roads like William Nicol?

So drive my kid to school, drive back home, then get on a bicycle?
Totally practical.

I saw some folk sitting on camper chairs counting cars on Katherine yesterday. It may have something to do with the impact assessment.

Bit pointless really because no one is using Katherine because the Rea Vaya roadworks and because of cement trucks for days up where it joins Rivonia.

This is going to paralyse the financial district.
Maybe I can get dispensation to work from home.

First World Activism is the reason, but I can't wrap my mind around two words in same sentence: "Ecology" and "Joburg".

This is probably a nationwide concern, or at least it should be. I've noticed a year-on-year increase in traffic volumes during my daily commute to the point that formerly quiet back roads are now gridlocked during peak hours. And aside from gridlock, the roads are in a terrible state due to increased load and poor maintenance.

And yet still no sign of a viable public transit system being implemented and in fact, in my area buses are being reduced.

No one left who knows how to synchronise traffic lights properly to ensure flow of traffic. Combined with entitled **** wits who block intersections.
