Dear all,

I will be replacing the tyres of my Golf within the next 3 months or so (came factory fitted with Bridgestone Turanza S001's which are okay without being awesome).

My current short-list consist of the Michelin Pilot Sport 3's, Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric 2 as well as the Continental Contisportcontact 5 P's (however not sure if available in 225/40/18's).

Anyone with experience in this regard? I'm specifically looking at the above options but feel free to add alternative options if you it would be a worthy option (only if equivalent to the above-mentioned options).

I had Continentals on my A6, 2 sets, nice and grippy, but doesnt last that long, I would add Pirelli to the list, it give the grip I need on the best driving roads in SA (Clarensdrive)

I've put Achilles 2233's on my G5 GTI.

now before you assume it's cheap and nasty rubbish...they replaced Continental Sport Contacts and are better in every way.

About a grand a tyre and I'll happily fit them again.

Well you asked for the best

Bridgestone RE11s (yes they are available in 18)

Contis are rubbish(once you have driven the other high performance tyres)

Not too slippery?

Good god man what's your mileage? :D

I've had my Golf 7 for a year. Only done 100 000km.

I have Michelin Pilot Primacy 3 on my diesel. Very little road noise and my last set of fronts lasted me 60k. Good performance in the dry. I guess the harder compound would mean slightly worse performance in the wet, but I never had bad understeer until they were <1mm in the wet.

Not too slippery?

Short of hard pull always at a standing start in the rain I've never had a slip.

And hard pull always in the rain have slips in just about every car and tyre I've ever driven.

Unfortunately you'll need to try it for yourself, and most people are way too trusting of the big brands by default.

I for instance know for a fact Continental is utter rubbish and will never use it again based on my experience.

When I bought the car it had Hi Fly's on the front or something like that and those were even better than the Continentals I put on after. In fact I drove it with HiFly's thinking they were the Continentals that the car had on when I test drove it, but the dealership had meanwhile changed them to pass roadworthy I suspect.

I'm brave, but not that brave otherwise I probably would have sourced some of those HiFly's or whatever they were called.

+1 to this. I will be using them on my car when the current tyres wear out. They did a great job on my cupra.

Very glad someone else has bit the bullet to try them out and that I'm not barking up the wrong tree here.

michelin pss.

Conti sport contact 2 was also an awesome tire

Had falken FK453 on my e36 m3, they were decent and grippy for the price, and didn't have any wet issues (albeit I didn't drive like a ****er in the rain)

The Goodyear F1 Asym are going to be the best price for performance. They have amazing reviews all over.

Seems I'll be trying out Achilies then. R800 a tyre is a ridiculous bargain.

Jeez where did you get that price?

Pretty sure mine was R995 each.

Is that not maybe the ATR Sport?

I do believe the 2233 is the top of the range.

Yes, 2233 is better than ATR Sport.
Size makes a difference to price, don't forget.

Michelin PSS for the win. Like steroids for a cars handling. And they last well too.

How was the road noise & ride quality ?

I had Hankook Ventus v12 - very noisy , harder ride and not as grippy as original Potenza

Back on Potenza - definitely a better tyre
