So the Veloster Turbo is finally out in SA.

I saw it early in the month at the Canal Walk motor show:

1.6T with 150kw & 265nm. Big thing is the price: “the model choice merely whether you want to pay R379 900 for the six-speed manual or R397 000 for the seven-speed direct-shift manual/auto.”

It a good looking car yes with good spec but I think that price is hectic. The N/A 1.6 models are around R80k cheaper as a reference.

Hmm, Golf money for a Hyundai ... no thanks. I understand it's clever marketing - charge premium prices and people will start to think you're delivering a premium product - but I don't think Hyundai's quality is quite up there just yet.

The price is ridiculous. We buy Hyundai cars because you get a lot of car for your money. At R400k there are many other cars I'd rather buy.

I'd rather they put the turbo model into the new i30 to make a more practical hatchback.

Last I heard they delayed the turbo motors because of our supposed bad fuel quality? This is also why we do not get the GDI motors here

VW has been doing it for years and just about everybody fell for it.

VW's been doing it for decades, so while they may still be over-priced, their engineering department has had the time necessary to implement a lot of very nice details. For the record I'm not a fan of the Golf - I agree it's as exciting as a toaster - but by the same token I've also *never* gotten into a Hyundai where I've ever thought 'Hmm, this is built as well as a VW.' About all you think of Hyundais is 'Wow, this isn't bad ... for a Hyundai', and it's going to take them years of real engineering to build substance into the car. Clever marketing only gets you so far.

True story wrt to Hyundai/Kia vs VW & what they think/aspire what the value of the brand is at present.

I also see you can get one for only R350k here: http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-cars-bak...ndai-veloster-turbo/1001282118280910012229409

Lol it is a tablet and the battery last a while,so I become lazy to charge it.

I could handle ugly if it was actually affordable but Hyundai (and Kia) are pricing themselves out of the market.

One can pick up a fairly low mileage 2012 or 2013 BWM M135i for that kind of money and I don't have to second guess which one will give a more pleasurable and exhilarating drive.
