The real reasons for power blackouts in SA

So the real reason is City power's and Eskom's few power distribution boxes that are old and have not been replaced.....

What a joke. Those might cause a short in bad weather causing a trip which just means the electricians would need to be dispatched.

It's got absolutely nothing to do with the power crisis we sit with now.

First part is right. The delays with Medupi and Kusile is a factor but so is to millions of non paying consumers and a couple municipalities that don't pay but draw so much current from the grid.

You haven't read the article properly...

While load shedding has been the cause of recent power blackouts, before that most electricity outages had nothing to do with load shedding.

“The non-load-shedding outages were caused by aging infrastructure, a lack of distribution network maintenance, cable theft, and overloading the system because of cable theft.”

The real problem for most of these issues, said Yelland, is the inadequate investment in distribution maintenance and refurbishment.

Yup, we had a lot of outages due to aging infrastructure. Such that in 2007 the load shedding outages we experienced only matched it. Now we have regular whole night outages every couple of months. It's better than the unexpected outages and load shedding but things should never have reached a point where any of the infrastructure was 40 years old let alone major infrastructure like transformers and stuff.

That old infrastructure is often pushed in to failure by load shedding.

Whatever the reason, they still need to be repaired/replaced.
Yup. And to do that, everyone needs to pay for what they use. The billions owed by some areas would make a big difference.

Wonder what Nkandla has from Eskom and what state (no pun intended) it is in...

Pathetic and unprofessional! like :wtf:

And bosses and employees still get bonuses! i would like to see their KPA!

Are we really still debating why we are having blackouts, its not exactly a mystery. This article is quite en-light-ening

The state of Municipality infrastructure is bad, most municipalities don't upgrade / replace as they take the money they made from selling electricity and use it for other things.

Never mind their salary....I've recently noticed the trend of the on-site technicians is to delay almost every trivial job into overtime....I also notice in one of our nearby streets there is a trend for a few Eskom staff in their bakkies to have a meet up there on a regular basis. Looks like the jobs and staff are not monitored..
