Hi all,

I'm looking for an uncapped provider around the Bapsfontein/Petit area, I've been without Telkom lines now for about 10 years (joys of cable theft) and the recent performance of ALL the cellular networks in the area are pathetic (as well as their customer support - I'm looking at you, MTN.)

I'm planning on using it primarily for online games (Battlefield) and netflix streaming (no more DSTV), along with peer-to-peer downloads when needs be.

Failing that I'd just be happy to have a network where DNS lookups don't take 2000+ms (once again, looking at you MTN)

I've been in contact with Bitco, who were very professional in helping me and have what seems to be the best prices and FUP, but do not have any coverage in my area and have no planned towers at my location.

Also been in contact with Screamer but they sure are taking their time getting back to me, otherwise someone has mentioned I barely have LOS to a MegaSurf tower that is about 25km away, who I will be contacting shortly.

Edit - From megasurf site: "Shaped uncapped packages have a Fair usage policy in place. Exceeding these limits will throttle your account down to 128k until the next month". Nevermind that then.

Anyone aware of any low-latency sattelite or other WISPs in this area?
Perhaps any last mile solutions? I have recently discovered that dark fiber africa has a termination point at a derelict telkom exchange at the (far) end of my road.

Any ideas/thoughts/recommendations/insults and/or coffee would be much appreciated, 2G/3G hasn't been working properly for about 8 months and I'm tired of dealing with mobile providers.

Hm. I thought I mentioned I did that already, apparently I did not.
BitCo were the only people to get back to me when I tried WAPA, but they do not have LOS.

Hi Faux_Grey.

Im working for Wipronet and we will be able to help you. Unfortunately we don't have any uncapped packages but low latency we can definitely do for you. We host our own Battlefield 4 server as well. Feel free to have a look at our website at www.wipronet.co.za or give us a call.

Regards

Nice to see someone have some coverage in my area, but I'm afraid the price per GB ratio is well out of my liking, but I will keep Wipronet in mind if I am unable to find anything suitable, thanks!

No other WISPs around that actually have a 'fair' fair usage policy? 128kbps is not my idea of speed.
Seem to be stuck up the paddle without a creek here.

Hello Faux,

Have you been successful with acquiring uncapped wireless, I too have the same issue in the Petit area (near Petit high school), I have only managed to get Telkom 3G but not uncapped?

Neobroadband doesn't seem to have coverage in South Africa. as in, any. Their site isn't working or something.

I know of this school, I am a few Km up the road from there. Still no luck regarding WISP/ADSL - but I see what seems to be a new Cell tower going up in that area (corner R51 & Rudi street) , hoping from this I'll be able to get MTN 3G signal when it's done in a few weeks. Funny how a new tower can be built in less time my mtn support tickets get answered. (have been waiting for over a year regarding an MTN service desk query) xD

Faux,

Have you had any joy at all? Business Solutions or bsit.co.za got hold of me through WAPA and seem to offer decent uncapped packages. They have equipment on a rise to the east of Bapsfontein just before the Bapsfontein tower and to the north of you Jenny also has a presence so two options...

So BSIT is on coming to install tomorrow - I am not to sure on how good their FUP/AUP is but the 2Mbps uncapped seems decent.

Will update as things progress.

Great to see connectivity happening! The bsit salesman I spoke to said they have no FUP so no data limits. Please keep us up to date sir.

Well the 2Mbps was amazing 1.96 Mbps on speedtest, however for 3 members using the service not the best so I have upped to a 6Mbps package and so far not too bad. I'm getting around 4.8Mbps for a shaped 6Mbps package, P2P run at around 650KBps - used well over 100GB with no problems.

On a side note we connecting to the Rynfield tower about 4.5KM away signal is on the low end of normal but stable.

Sounds Great, I'd be about 8-10 KM from any tower in Rynfield, Pricing isn't too bad at R1200 for a 6MB uncapped link, this I would be happy to pay for getting connected.
Unfortunately no line of sight when I asked BSIT back in November. :/

Ahh that's a pity, getting about 5.6Mbps down and 0.99Mbps for upload lately our dish had to come down by a small degree to get better reception.
