My Daughter has just come back from the Centurion Licence renewal office after trying to collect her renewed Driving Licence.

She applied on 21st April and was told "8 week" it is now 10 weeks and she was told that they last received licences from 14th April and that the licence producers were on strike.

I can find no mention of this strike on the internet, but I do remember reading that the licence manufacture contract had expired. (http://www.timeslive.co.za/local/20...e-card-contract-battle-heads-to-highest-court)

Has any one else experienced any problems with the actual issue of the licence? Or is this another Tshwane lie?

I heard was new company(obviously a new brother/cousin/uncle/aunt of someone) doing printing and they're more useless than the last bunch... don't know how true it is

From the Natal Courier Article:

The contract was formally cancelled in May but by then a backlog had developed since the beginning of the year as it is believed that Prodiba were not paid by the Transport Department. The Transport Department is now producing the cards themselves,
Japie Mbele of the Transport Department would tell the Courier that ‘the Department is aware of the problem and is attending to the matter. The Department apologises for inconvenience caused.’
He had no idea when the issue would be rectified but in another statement received by the Courier, Azwi Managa of the Driving Licence Card Account under the Transport Department, said ‘we are dealing with the matter’.
“We anticipate the delivery of cards to be back to normal turn-around time of 21 days before August 1. Motorists who are applying for their cards should be able to collect these in six to eight weeks.”

My problem is that I am booked to fly to Europe in August, and need my licence for Car Hire.

You can get a temporary licence, which is issued immediately and cost R45.

It is valid for six months.

Had to do this exact same thing for a relative who traveled to New Zealand last week.

Will the AA issue an International Driving Permit on a Temporary Licence?

Well the licences are moving again.

Collected mine after 9 Weeks. SO phoned Metro to find out if licences were at Centurion before we went to collect.
