I am posting this as a warning to other ADSL users in this area and those interesting in buying in this area.

Extension One of the Willows is covered by the 012 807 exchange. This exchange is capable of 10Mb copper connections only which is not the problem. The issue is that the copper in this area is so old that it is just not capable of 10Mb connections. Connections of 2 and 4Mb is no problem. Just DO NOT APPLY for a 10Mb connection.

I am 2km from the exchange and I get an 8Mb connection at that distance which is fair. The SNR however is 6! Telkom as now adjusted my line to 7Mb and the SNR has now climbed to 11. The number of disconnects is a lot less, but I still get them.

Telkom is aware of the issue because on their website where you check for coverage, they state that ADSL in this area is a "best effort" process! This area has been targeted for FTTH, but we all know that you will have more luck getting butter with a red hot needle into the anus of a warthog than for Telkom to start doing something about the issues!

I can hook up with Bitco or Neotel at a cost of R3,500 per month, but that is ludicrous! I am willing to pay, but not that much!

are you still having issues with this exchange? I'm on the 012 807 exchange as well and I know it was congested during certain times of the day, weekdays it will usually be between 20:00 and 22:00 at night but that was 2 months ago

Since last week, I have been having heavy packet loss, streaming is not possible, did a speedtest now came back with 98Kbps downspeeds on a 4Mbps line. I did log a fault now but will see what is going to come of it
 
Hey guys,

I am on a 8mb line and in the last month or so I cant stream videos and gaming is also just as horrible due to the packet loss and disconnects.

Hopefully they upgrade our area ASAP. But that will probably only happen in 2025 if we are lucky.
 
Dont know what Telkom did on the exchange then, everything was fine up to last week, then my streams on dota got bad and that's where I saw the packet loss at exchange

I can play games with the occasional lag spike while in Dota
 
no idea, Thought for a while that maybe my router was the issue, but swapped it out and tested another isp but still the same issues.
 
Connected to a 2 MB line in the Equestria Estate, and getting a full 2Mb/s connection.
Have had a few issues the weekend, but since had a great connection... for the max speed...

Wait a bit... Remeber that I had a few disconnections this weekend. Thought it was Afrihost again... :sick:

Also just noticed my SNR and Attenuation stats are really bad all of a sudden

I have a 012 807 number.

I have actually given it up for a bad job... With Telkom spending money like water on decreasing their work force, it will be HIGHLY unlikely for them to do anything about this problem soon. I am waiting for someone to start rolling out FTTH; not Telkom as that will take another few years with the few people they have now! I will be their first client! Apparently this area is scheduled for FTTH, but the big question is WHEN? If LTE was available, I would have done for that, but we don't even have that option!

Well The complex where I live started asking everyone in the complex if they wanted fiber and if enough people are interested they will get someone to put it in, so hopefully telkom will be a problem of the past soon

I have logged a fault with telkom and also told them other users are experiencing same issues, so best we can do for now is log a fault and hope they sort it out
 
Hi guys,

I live in Stellenberg road and since last night I have been having very bad latency issues. 350ms+ ping but my speed is fine. SNR and Attenuation is also fine.

My line was perfect before that.
 
Mine started about right when TI 5 started, so streaming the games is horrible, but yah only thing we can do is log faults with telkom and hope they do something

I'm also staying there in Equestria Estate, Piketberg.

Have been having my issues since 19 June already. 45 mails to ISP (WA), 36 messages to telkom support, and 12 promises of it being escalated later, issue is still with me (us).

I'm able to play local games though - Dota2 and CS:GO both at about 20 - 30ms, but as soon as I want to log onto EU server games - Blizzard games, LoL - all goes to hell regarding latency. Can also do normal speed at Downloads, but gaming is shot to pieces from EU.

There is something wrong with the exchange, 807 and 803 and even with great line stats (SNR > 25, att < 15), online gaming on international servers is a no-go, youtube usually no-go.

Some of the users have established, that once the line gets some load, the packet loss skyrocket, up to 60% and what is causing latency to be so bad.

For a solution, well, yea, keep on pestering Telkom, see if FTTH comes first or they fix it. I will check back with you guys in 2017.

Got his number due to lots of struggling with Telkom in the past... Always willing to assist with a problem, without the hour wait to get through to an incompetent techie. Do not want to post it here, or else he might just get his number changed ;)

My SNR is good, very good to be honest, my attenuation is another story though, Packet loss usually between 7-15% and streaming through dota client not happening, gaming on local servers are okay, has its ups and downs and tbh haven't really tried playing on EU servers.
