Cape Town - DA leader Mmusi Maimane has joined the ranks of political and trade union leaders with bodyguards.

Maimane was spotted with his bodyguard rushing to Wednesday’s sitting of the ad hoc Nkandla committee after its lunch break. Asked about his security, he sidestepped a comment, but didn’t deny the security measure.

While he was in the meeting, his bodyguard stayed outside, like the protectors of the Police and Public Works ministers, who briefed MPs in the meeting, taking time out from the cabinet lekgotla under way in Pretoria.

“Upon being elected, the leader’s public profile was raised significantly. After an assessment, low-key security was provided to him, which the DA pays for,” Maimane’s spokesman Mabine Seabe said.

It’s an unusual situation for the DA. Former leader Helen Zille, who is the Western Cape Premier, was allocated an official protection detail by the SAPS VIP Protection Unit due to her government role, as have other premiers.

Yeah I have no issue with a seemingly cool and clean dude having a bodyguard. I take issue with corruption & pillaging. Be interesting to see what he does in the coming months / years.

Don't know why MickeyD edited the article. I did include the whole thing and a link. Now it's a short version.

He does seem to carry this image. I would like to meet him some day.

Helen used to have two. I made friends with one of them :) The security is pretty hectic sometimes.

If the minister of stationery can have 20, why can't he have one too?:D

Seriously though, I don't believe the current train passengers are going to sit idly by and watch the track come to an end. Leading up to 2019, he's going to need them.

Yeah...the ambassadors also get VIP units allocated so a major political figure like leader of the opposition should too.
Government officials maybe, but why does the Maimane need one paid for by us? Besides, he had a go at others for having them.

uh no...I mean foreign ambassadors get SA VIP protection units. Anyway...personally I feel the main opposition party leaders *should* get taxpayer funded protection.

e.g. If the minister of inland fisheries gets killed...nothing much will happen. Yet we protect them. If everyone's favorite red hat wearer gets killed...well that would shake the SA politics in a bad way & introduce a serious element of instability that SA simply doesn't need. Preventing that is money much better spent than building a palace for the president.
