International roaming bill shock may soon be history

I don't get this.. roaming is an option on my phone and since i leave it off.. i don't get data charges.. why aren't users away? I mean as soon as I land and register with the VLR on a foreign network i get SMS'd rates and number etc for new network

One thing that does however annoy me is that MTN Group abuses the fact that each country is separate rather than playing the reconciler it could play.. I guess its all down to money tho and so their offer for data across country lines on their network comes at a cost
 
Vodacom have done this for a while already. Soon as you switch your phone on in another country you get a welcome message and the rates that will apply.

Guys, also take note of this roaming product from Vodacom. Can save you a lot of money.

I'm specifically talking about switching from contract to prepaid with your SA sim card, so that when you use your SA sim card overseas there are no nasty surprises.

Thats why I have an iPad.. instant hotspot wherever I am, just buy a local SIM. This is not always possible btw, e.g. in Turkey i found that you needed to apply to have your IMEI number whitelisted etc and the entire process could take 2 weeks.. while using a SIM without registering can be disabled anytime time between 1-14 days.

Doesn't work in all countries. Not the ones I visit frequently. One of the reasons I stay on contract, it's guaranteed to work. Of course, then I have to be careful myself.

Last time I checked prepaid roaming does not work in all countries and where it does work, it does not work for data I think. It might have changed I am not sure.

Other tablets have the same function. :)

Obviously I can only comment about the countries I've been to, which tend to be mainly first world countries in Europe and North America, so your mileage may vary. I would never even contemplate using data roaming though, even if it did work. What I do is take a dual-sim phone with me when I go overseas, stick my Vodacom sim in the one slot and a local sim card in the other for internet access, and create a WIFI hotspot. Works like a charm.

Yes.. Though not sure you can start up hotspot from notebook & phone on the fly without taking it out and manually starting it..

With iOS you can see battery level and startup and teardwn the hotspot without opening up device so it sits in backpack and I just tell it to make one
