Decided my good deed for the day was to cancel a client's dormant free account with WebAfrica so that the 2GB of unused data per month can be released to someone else.

Lo and behold they now expect you to call them and explain why you want to cancel, before the request will be accepted.

WebAfrica WTF.jpg

Has this always been a requirement for the free accounts?

Well just leave it dormant, I wouldn't even bother. They will redirect you to a dept which tries to convince you to stay.

Looks like they're following the same approach as some of the insurance companies do now. They either want an email or a phone call, their retention's department then either contacts you asking for a reason of service cancellation, or they try to talk you into staying with them.

I had to do this to cancel my account with them yesterday, inconvenient yes, but a painless exercise.

I called them on friday to cancel. they were "busy"and would call me back.

I called yesterday, they were busy and would call me back.

can someone point me to the WA rep on myBB please? I was happy with waiting a month for the cancelation to take effect but now I am going to go out of my way to make sure they do not get a cent from me this month.

I called at 08:02am and got threw within 2 minutes of holding and off the phone 3 minutes later with a confirmation of cancellation email a minute later.

And you are 100% sure that your problem is ISP related and not line related?

Emailed them, informed them i cannot make calls during work hours and wish to cancel, they replied saying sorry to lose me and asked why i was leaving, emailed back and they replied OK.

Make sure that you send the ticket to their billing department via the customer zone. I found that's quicker than just emailing them at their support address. The billing department then moves it over to retentions. So there is sometimes a bit of a delay there. But it's cool, I cancelled anyway.

This leads to inflated user bases.

Yup, leaving it active, just counts you as a 'customer'. That and other reasons is probably why they went with this method of processing cancellations.

Ahhh.... sneaky. Also have one of these and an Afrihost one. Was gonna ask what's the big deal, it's just a free account... but I see now.
Personally haven't used either account in ages but will keep them as a back-up .... seemingly pointless back-ups but good to have 'quick test' accounts imo.

Out of all the stupid, fscktarded things that Webafrica has done lately, this surely tops the list:

  • Their call centre will be tied up with cancellation requests, making their support performance and response times even worse than they already are.
  • Due to manual processing of cancellations, expect some cancellation requests not to be processed properly. Think of how Openweb's cancellation progress doesn't work -- same thing will apply here.
  • More pertinently, if you make a cancellation process take significant time and effort, you are ensuring that those customers will never come back, and will never recommend you to others.

This sort of move seems to be the death throes of a dying company.

when you do get through to them swear as much as possible. it actually gets their attention and then you get helped.

I did that at the beginning of October and it went through immediately. When did this change?
