I apologise if this is in the wrong category. I received a call from Telkom to say that I will no longer be able to use my prepaid line at the end of February 2016. They told me I need to go to Telkom where I will receive a sim card and a new phone and I will pay R198 for a year's rental. Is this true? It doesn't make sense to me. I have a landline, what do I need a sim and another phone for now?

Thanks guys.

Yes it is true.

They are moving everyone off the fixed line prepaid platform and onto a FLLA service (fixed line look alike) operating off their mobile network. The same call charges, etc applies.

Reason... many exchanges are being cut over to MSAN and ISAM technologies meaning plenty of equipment will become redundant. To keep it all active for a few prepaid customers in an exchange area is a huge financial burden. It also means having to keep all that equipment powered up and maintained, with spares being kept in a store somewhere as well. Then you have the different software platforms and having to integrate them into the new network too...

I have been advising all friends and family on prepaid fixed line services to migrate to this new service.

This new service is pretty neat in that you can insert the SIM into the base station at home or directly into a handset. As long as you are within the signal area of the Telkom tower in your suburb, you can use it as a mobile device.

Service, charges, number etc etc stays the same as a normal Telkom landline. As already mentioned, the pretty sweet thing is that you can take that phone with you if really needed, just like a cellphone.

They have tried every trick in the book to scam customers out of this service. Looks like they finally found one that may actually work.

I have been waiting for telkom landline bt they said they cont install its for me because of my adress they dont pick up my installatoin adress and they advice me to go to the telkom store and gove them my referance number of my order and ask them to give me telkom sim card

I wonder how much better this is on average than just using the 79c prepaid cellular options from Vodacom or MTN?

If I convert my postpaid line to a prepaid line, do I have to get one of those SIM card landline phones? What happens if I need to go back to a postpaid at a later stage?

They dont offer prepaid normal lines anymore.. I tried to convert from postpaid to prepaid and got nowhere with that.,. the best they could do was move me to the wireless service as we were having copper line problems in the area.. But im still on post paid..

It wud be great if i could move to prepaid and load the freeme package :)

Telkom no longer offers prepaid landlines and any existing landlines are being migrated to a fixed wireless solution running on top of Telkom Mobile/Vodacom, i.e. they give you a phone with a sim card that is linked to a landline number. It is also possible to place the sim card into a cellphone which will then allow you to use it outside your house. As far as I know the cost is around R200 per month for this service.

An alternative/cheaper solution is to buy a prepaid Telkom Mobile sim card from any store. Change the calling plan to Sim Sonke which will reduce the all network calling rate to 75c per minute. If you plan to call a lot of landline numbers, load Telkom Fixed Voice bundles which will further reduce the cost to between 40-50c per minute.

Sorry for the slight derail. The battery in my parents FLLA phone is swollen. The phone is like 18 months old. Doubt Telkom will change it? If not it looks I have get a feature phone. Something with big buttons and a big screen.

Some of the models can run straight off power without need for a battery.
I was concerned about ours so I only put the battery back in during load shedding bouts.
Just take the battery out and see if it works.
With the phone on constant charge this is bound to happen to the battery.

Is it possible to port a landline to the Telkom Sim Sonke package?

With the FLLA service they still charge a montly fee, but Sim Sonke they only charge for the minutes.

@mh348: I don't think that you can but I wouldn't mind doing this myself! I think that you can only move a landline number to a VoIP service.

This company offers virtual numbers which you might be able to reroute to a Sim Sonke number. They claim that you can move your landline number over to them and reroute it to other devices. Let us know if you are able to find a good solution as I would also like to cancel my Telkom line but keep the number.
