Why Netflix won’t be able to block VPN users

True story. It's just how the Internet works, and no shiny shoe person in a boardroom can change that.
 
Unfortunately the internet is global. It's one network. No amount of blocking geographic IP's or censorship will stop people from circumventing the system.
 
Netflixs probably only blocking VPNs from time to time just to say their actively trying to stop VPN pirates for legal reasons
 
Hola, regardless of the security issues with Luminati shows that there are too many residential IP's that can be used for proxying. It's playing whackamole

Because of content licensing...

Netflix would love to do this - but they are being forced by the owners of the content they serve to do otherwise.

Because content is licensed to other providers such as Multichoice, etc. - I am sure they pay a pretty penny for exclusive content rights. They would lose quite a few subscribers if Netflix SA had the same shows on offer at the same time.

Because they're dinosaurs, they sold and are promised "exclusivity" by people like DSTV and it makes them feel special. They're also terrified that the big incumbents will be bankrupted by Netflix and instead of selling the same product 100's of times to many different countries they'll be stuck selling it to just Netflix.

No, they are a business and they can sell the same product to each country provider. That is a lot more more money than just selling it to Netflix for global distribution rights.

These people are making billions, they don't give a damn about anything else.
 
instead of trying to block VPN access which may be quite futile, if they really want to block non-US access, they can just check the subscriber credit card details.... most of us geo-dodgers use our local credit card for payment.
but like so many other people around the world with this issue... if they dont accept my US account subscription, no matter how/where i connect, they will loose me as a subscriber, period... wont take the local subscription for foreseeable future.
i'm guessing geo-dodger subscribers make up a sizeable portion of their income... they need to think nicely if they want to loose that 'stream' :-)

Prior to launching locally in 180 additional countries that might have helped but now those people subscribing to a US account can simply get a local account and continue to take advantage of one of Netflix's most prized features… roaming.

If Netflix disables roaming they going to stir a whole other hornets nest.

But when Netflix eventually has enough of its own great content and enough worldwide content from others, then many people might not subscribe to these other local providers anymore and then the dinosaurs will be crying (and probably lobby for regulations or something).

You cannot both criticise populist, socialist politicians on the one hand for trying to limit freedom and capitalists on the other for making as much money as possible.

Having said that, I agree that regional licensing of content is getting ridiculous in a global economy.
