O/T: Hardware Bargains. NAS drive discussions

2.5" 2tb externals are cheaper than internals. will remove drives and install in server.
Looking at the 2.5 because of lower power requirements.
3.5 is also a option if hte price are right

and when you are all excited the day your drives get delivered, and you open the first one, thus voiding the warranty, and you find the USB port soldered to the PCB and you can't use it internally.

Have you installed a 2.5" in the HP Micro Server?
They have those funny drive bays that only fit 3.5" drives and click into place on the SATA and power connectors (i.e. they're not cables you can just plug in)

I'd be very interested if you have managed to get this right as I want to install an SSD in my HP Micro for the OS, but couldn't figure out how to get this right short of buying extension SATA and power cables.

Buy a 2.5" to 3.5" bracket?

Afaik most (all?) Seagate 2.5" portable drives have SATA connectors. But yes voiding the warranty is a problem. What about something like this: http://www.takealot.com/seagate-surveillance-hard-disk-drive-2tb/PLID34166410

I just Googled the model number of the drive he linked to, people are using them in their PS4's so in this case it looks like it is a normal SATA connector, but still think it's a bad idea, as soon as he opens them up the warranty is gone, I would recommend just buying normal drives paying just a little extra and having the safety net.

For NAS pony up and get the WD red or Seagate NAS models.

+1, the Seagate NAS models aren't too bad price wise. Plus they come with a 3 year warranty, compared to 1 year with the WD Red.

Planning on getting a couple 4TB drives for my media storage.

Sounds like this would be the easier option.
Any comparison betweeen Hitatchi and Seagate NAS drives?

HGST, formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, make the best drives, you can just Google it and see.

Heard some good things about HGST, but where do we get them in SA? Google doesn't give me anything.

I see takealot ran out of stock on those Lenovo NAS devices. Was looking forward to getting one.
