So lots of people asking the same thing, DFA running outside, can I connect etc. Some info

Who is Dark Fibre Africa

DFA is a large open access dark-fibre network which operators can buy local links from.

What is dark fibre?

As a company DFA's plan is to install large areas of fibre which they can rent fibre pairs out to customers. The fibre that gets laid is usually not 'active' and only gets lit when links are requested.

So can I connect via DFA?

Yes and no, while you may be near a fibre cable you may not be near an aggregation point. Aggregation points have rings around where connectivity can be offered without additional costs incurred.

What does it cost?

DFA usually serves as a backbone for operators and model does not work for single FTTH connections. While it can be done you are looking at spending ~R6k pm (for 25mbps uncapped/unshaped) with a provider who offers services. The backbone works better for FTTH where multiple houses are involved to share the costs.

So to add to this the Helios links offered by DFA cannot be used to aggregate traffic, IE if you wanted to terminate and connect multiple households this is technically not allowed using this model. You would have to go with a Peregrine/LOS link from the Tachyon/Aggregation node to your households where you would aggregate if you were to conform to DFA policy. Short answer is it's very expensive to do.

@koeksGHT I have those rings around my house, but everyone wants to to charge me additional costs?.

Like he said, the minimum for a single connection is ~R6k/month, plus access build fees which can be R11k-R15k.

DFA doesn't deal with consumers and only deals with companies, who in turn would work up feasibility and give you a price. This is why ISPs you ask will say that you need a minimum uptake of R10k or R15k a month in an area before they'll consider it.
