The big draw I see for C-Fibre is that they pay the R1710 Vuma installation (subject to 12 months commitment)

If you factor that saving in over 12 months, that's a "discount" of > R140pm, so it is effectively 20/20 for less than the 20/2 offered by most other ISPs

The question for me is how prompt are they at arranging this installation, as opposed to me doing is straight through Vuma?

Your waiting time would be the same as if you applied directly with Vumatel, Vumatel don't offer any bias towards which way the installation was requested.

I've been on Cell C over Vumatel for about a month now. I called them on a Monday and was able to get them to install the router on the Wednesday. it was still a trial at that point, so they may be busier now.

Yeah it really just depends if the network is ready where your home is located and the demand of installs at the time.

The Vuma installers will install their CPE (Raycore switch - no wireless). The Cell C guy will deliver and connect a wireless router (Huawei B315), which is connected to the CPE. I know some ISPs will allow you to connect your own router, in which case you won't have to wait. The router needs to have an ethernet WAN port.

Thanks, Disparagus

Any other comments on your Cell-C experience? (since this will result in a 12-month soft lock in)

I've had no issues. I'm not the world's biggest downloader but I've maxed out the line a few times for a couple of hours at a time (Usenet, Steam, Netflix). It doesn't look like they're shaping. I can't comment on support since I've not had to call but I'm very happy with the service. If it stays like this I will continue with Cell C when the trial ends.

PS: Based on info I've read on this forum, it seems that your IP address gets assigned to the first device that gets plugged into the CPE, and if that's your laptop then you may need to make some support calls when you later connect a router.

Why would you lock yourself into something when there are alternatives at basically the same rate?

Well there are some benefits:

1. They pay the install. If you cancel you have to pay them back for this, so you don't really lose.
2. Their 100 MB products is symmetrical, whereas Cool Ideas and Crystal Web are 100/10 at the same price.

There seem to be some good very good ISPs on Vumatel, but the Cell C offering is worth considering. To be honest, I only went with them because they had a free trial, but they haven't done anything to make me cancel.

"Going rate" for 20/2 = R799. Factor in the upfront R1710 (covered by C-Fibre) over 12 months = R799+R1710/12 = R941.50

C-Fibre 20/2 = R899/month for symmetrical (with an arguably better router)

I'm also on the trial and found that the speeds aren't that good even though a speedtest shows download of around 13mbps or 20mbps

Thanks, TheTwo. Would you mind posting a speedtest result?

I sometimes get "network issues" when doing a speedtest when it's trying to measure the upload speed

The support isnt very good, the phone option they give doesnt work and when you mail them, they just repeat the same

I'm thinking of going to Coolideas at the end of this Trial

Great, come over to the Cool Side :)
