Ditching dstv and heading for netflix and showmax. Which ISP is best for streaming?

I'm currently on a 4mb 20gig softcap with Telkom, and need to move to an uncapped account for streaming content when I give DSTV the boot.

Question: Should I stay with telkom (& change to their 4mb do uncapped package) or try another ISP like Axxess and their premium uncapped packages?

I suspect i'll go through somewhere between 200 and 300 gigs a month.

What do you reccomend?

That's if you can get Netflix going on all your devices. I.e. you need a openwrt or mikrotik router to configure the nitty gritty.

I have Netflix running on all my devices and have a mid range TP-link, I doubt he will have to upgrade his router.

300 gigs a month works out to +/-8 hours of watching every day. Most ISP's will stream properly on any of their uncapped products but don't expect too much from torrents.

I would go with a basic uncapped form Afrihost, Axxess, CW or Vox and if it isn't sufficient at the end of the month do an upgrade. Also move away from Telkom dealing with their support is a nightmare.

Hi Malcolm, feel free to give our 4Mbps trial account a shot. Online video streams receives pretty high priority on our network. Our 4Mbps uncapped premium package has a download threshold of approximately 400GB over a 30 day rolling window as well. ;)

We're on a Telkom 10mb uncapped account and rarely have streaming problems - between myself, my wife and our two kids we average 15gb per day without a hitch.

I have a piece of crap Telkom Huawei working just fine.

Yeah - our crappy dlink DSL-2750U also does a great job. It's not a complicated process getting Netflix to play ball.

I'm on Telkom's uncapped package and I don't have any problems streaming and I stream quite a bit (every day) but not much downloading except for some game updates. I very seldom have to buffer anything on my 4Mbps line. However, I am considering moving over to Afrihost's capped package as it will work out cheaper for me since I only use between 30 - 50 GB a month.
 
On what quality do you generally stream?

And how much is "quite a bit"?

30 - 50GB seems very low.

Is it possible to set the DNS on th MWEB router?

And it's by far the very best thing ever made by man ever!

My assumption was that OP was on ADSL though.
 
Afrihost and mweb are very choppy with their streaming and gaming quality. Crystal Web have been consistently great even when international links had unplanned outages.

Oh yes, of course - ADSL.

(Off topic: Crystal Fibre will be my first choice as well sometime in August after Auckland Park is fibered.)

fast.com (Netflix's speed test) reports my line running at about 99% of rated speed... Seriously impressive real world performance

I'm curious as to what down / up speeds you opted for on Crystal Fibre?

I'll order a symmetrical connection as I really need decent upload for my consulting gigs.
