New Xbox One S – details

For farks sake man, first Sony and now them. Why even both getting a console if it's going to be updated every 2 years... :mad:
 
I don't think this new Xbox is any more powerful than the old one. 4K capable just means it can upscale to 4K, not that it is powerful to render at 4K.

They have probably just taken advantage of the recent shrink to 14nm for cost and power savings.

This console is the same as the old one. It's 4K VIDEO not games.

Much like the Xbox 360 got HDMI added.

Next year however they will do a more powerful 4K console.

Point still stands. Why even bother with consoles anymore if there's always an upgrade around the corner. One of the reasons to buy one is that it would last years until it needed to be replaced...
 
They have been releasing slim versions of consoles for years. They don't break backwards compatibility when they do.

So this is really nothing new. I think there were 3-4 versions of the Xbox 360 and at least 2-3 of the PS3. There was also the PS2 Slim.

There was the original Nintendo DS, DS Lite and then DSi.

Your old one isn't going to magically stop working.

Only if you want to be cutting edge do you "need" to upgrade.

Also if you don't have a 4K TV it means nothing to you.

I read somewhere that the Xbox One is designed to last 10 years - always on. I don't think that this is a replacement/upgrade like the 360 to One was, but rather a face lift version.

The new PS4 rumors though.... that smells like a full on upgrade.

Well one could argue that they were already behind on technology when the console was released. They should have been up to date with it then already, which would have negated the need to constantly upgrade. I would even have paid the premium for it at the time.

A console is a device that resides in your living room, and you plan on it staying there for the next 10 years or so. It's not as simple as just swapping phones, which is a small mobile device that is easy to get rid of...

I'm sure YOU would,but they probably needed to get under a certain price point to ensure sufficient demand for the product.
 
I have a suspicion that this along with the PS4.5 is a related to AMDs 14nm process. The more 14nm wafers they can manufacture the better for everyone and allows the pricing to come down. No point in continuing to mass produce older 28nm chips when they can produce new ones which are cheaper, faster and more power efficient.

There is a "slim" coming out now and a full blown upgrade next year much like the new PS4.

But things are different now as backwards compatibility is no longer a concern like before so they will all run alongside each other.

So it's not a full blown upgrade like the old days.

If the newer ones can run the same games with better graphics and yet older versions retain compatibility by sacrificing performance/detail gains it will be a win for all.

No it won't. Next generation the initial buyers will possibly drop significantly, since everyone will be holding out for the upgrade that's around the corner (which may then never come).

Also you won't just lose detail, that takes a lot more work than just having your low-spec version run at e.g. 30 or 45fps instead of 60, which will make it look and play far worse.
 
I sure hope they are not going to make consoles feel obsolete so quickly.. I am still trying to build my library for my 'next gen' ( not sure what to call it now that new versions are coming out)
