DISCLAIMER: I am not affiliated with AVSupply in any way, however they supplied me with a remote free of charge to test and write this review.

Continuing from my post in the DroidTV thread:

So Jacque from AVSupply in his infinite wisdom decided to ask me to be a guinea pig for one of his new products:

A universal remote a la Logitec Harmony... A full review will be posted next week once I've had a play.

Ok so I've had a couple of days to play with this and I'm really impressed.

There were a few niggles during set-up(mainly dealing with Win10) but I think Jacque has sorted it all out in the instructions now. I've had a read through them and it's very clear on what you need to do. The instructions and tips can be found here:

Once we got the set-up done the remote was a joy to program, that screen really helps you out so you don't have to do the usual programming method of holding 19 buttons down, spinning in a circle and cursing the sainted goat. That's if you even have to go that route, while connected to the PC you punch in the model number of your device or even the remote model number and *ping* it gets the settings. Managed to do that with the mygica 582(the 585 is close enough) and my TV. My amp required manual programming though.

So for a day I just used the remote like that, swapping between the devices and it worked well. However this remote can do much more.

Once connected to the PC you can add "Favourites" to the home screen, so I set one up called "Watch TV" this when selected powers up the TV, amp and mygica and loads Kodi(there are delay settings so you can open kodi after the box has booted up) after which the remote runs the DroidTV. I then created another one called "All Off" which, unsurprisingly turned everything off. Now while this was ok, I didn't like that you had to switch between the favourites every time, I just knew the SO wouldn't like it.

So I created a "new" device called "All In One" and loaded the Droid box settings, then you can go to "Macro's" and this gives the options of setting buttons to do multiple things, so under "All In One" the power button does all the devices and boots Kodi. Then I programmed volume to do my amp and a few of the keys to adjust sound modes etc and voila, one remote to run 3 devices at once, intuitively...

So intuitively in fact, that after a few too many beers with the guys on fri night I came home to a face like thunder plonked in front of the TV watching her stories... After being marched to bed, the next morning while making apology coffee I noticed everything was off with the remote un-smashed on the coffee table. And this is from a woman who got confused about Pokemon Go...

As usual Jacque was a joy to communicate with, I was supposed to be helping him out but of course he did most of the work. I specifically wanted page up and down, he had the idea of using a Key Map Editor to assign up and down to unused keys, works perfectly. I also have a very weird issue where my TV and mygica use the same frequencies, no problem, he created a .conf edit installer that will map the mygica to different codes, still just need to dig out the old laptop with the card reader to try this though.

All in all a great remote and even greater service.

After the glowing recommendation though a few notes, the screen isn't touch, there are buttons either side of the screen. And the big one is the batteries, it isn't chargeable and uses 3xAA's. The ones supplied are crap, online reviews say programming really chews the batteries up and mine barely survived the initial setup. I'm experiencing similar though, under normal use with just red Energizers after 5 days now the battery bar is still full. I would still recommend dropping the brightness and screen timeout to minimum though.

Looks nice, I'm just wondering how durable it would be with that LCD, especially in my house where my kids are always fighting over the remote.

Nice review. I'd really like to get a new universal remote (my Harmony 300i packed up ages ago - a terrible purchase as it didn't last very long).

What's the build quality like (plastics, joins, etc)?

It's not a touch screen so is covered in thick plastic, you'll have a tough time smashing that screen.

It has a nice mixture of hard and soft plastics. The centre bit around the direction arrows is particularly nice to handle, is a band of soft plastic, almost rubbery, all the way around the remote as well so your index finger round the back rests nicely. Mixture of hard and soft click buttons as well.

The only finishes on it I don't like is the control buttons for the remote itself(around the screen area), they're a bit sharp and the battery clasp which is a magnet for fingerprints and is quite tight which bites into your finger... Niggles really, all in all good build quality, has a solid feel and nice to hold.

Where will you get the Harmony 650 from if you decided to get one?
Can't find any in stock up here in PTA.

Huh, Amazon but I see it's no longer shipping here. Had this in my cart this afternoon to see how much it would cost and now it no longer ships to SA. Price was R1100 with shipping and duties. Maybe just check back there every now and then to catch it when it comes from a supplier that ships here.

The company manufacturing these remotes have closed down shop a couple of years ago and they are no longer supported.
I womder where this stock comes from

China. Our supplier has about 100 in stock

Is it at this point I come in and mention how I bought a Harmony 700 and 650, which is still in box as a backup, when they were still in available locally for very cheap?

:D

I don't really understand why people buy things and leave them in a box.

So you buy 2 of everything in case something breaks?

I bought the second one when Logitech announced they were discontinuing the Harmony range and they were no longer being sold, the ones in stock in stores at that time were the last ones ever available in SA.

Discontinuing in South Africa only. Still available overseas. Just got one at the beginning of the year. This device looks like a good option if you don't have someone to bring a Harmony into the country for you though. (don't know if Amazon ships those here or not).

There was a time Logitech announced they are discontinuing the Harmony range and a couple of months later they decided just kidding but I agree this looks like a solid remote with basically all the same functionality except for Logitech's massive remote database to program from.
