Hi, i ordered a new service which was the available fastest speed of adsl to my location a few weeks ago.

I was officially informed on Monday 19 September that my adsl speed has been upgraded to 10 megs.
However my line speed seems sluggish.

SNR Margin 6.0 16.9 db
Line Attenuation 43.5 23.5 db
Data Rate 10240 764 kbps
Max Rate 11788 1156 kbps
POWER 0.0 12.6 dbm
CRC 6846 1

Speed test shows me results of 8.something and pretty steady and then it gradually drops to about 4.8-5.2

Not sure what can be done to fix this.

I have read a few articles about the SNR and Attenuation, but not sure if Telkom actually fix this.
I am getting called by the technician to see how fast a web site loads, and that she will check what speed i am on, and that she is the technician and that she deals with the underground cabling.

There might be an attached image here where the adsl team changed the port profile to 8 as a test and they said there is a fault on the line.
According to their stats i should be able to get 10 Megs based on my location.

my ping test results are between B and D qualities.

I have tested 2 routers and also 2 ISPs. I have also tested guest openserv

Your snr is a little low. I'd drop to 8meg.

BTW 8meg downloads on a 10meg line is normal.

Hi Chevron, serial breaker of phones.

So i would imagine a speed test for a 10 meg would be 8.7 ? and 8 megs would be 7.something.
Not sure if that is the same.

I hear you though, it might be worth while just asking the guys to put me on a 8 meg line.
They tested a 8 meg profile for me in the adsl team , they did it software wise.
I am not sure if they have to physically do a hard change, like maybe the rack or switch i was on before was a good 4-8 one.
Not sure if they just software this or hardware this? do you know?
I had all sorts of rubbish happen when i asked for the upgrade, the line went completely dead no voice or data.
Line came up the next day after reporting.
Then 2 days later it went dead , but only the adsl.
When it eventually was rectified it was up and synching at 10 megs.

Just for background when i was on a 4 meg i would get downloads single threaded downloads of 380 to 410 kb/s which is excellent.
Speed would climb from start speed of say 60kb/s and then get faster until that speed of ~400kb/s

Now i get 30kb/s and 80kb/s and 60kb.s and 160kb/s and then sometimes it hoos to 200kb/s and then if i am lucky i get 300kb/ or 350kb./s

Its ridiculous. I stay at least 1 kilometer nearer to where i used to where i had a 6 meg synch.

You just need the right technical support person to assist you.
I get called to say i must ask 10210 to ask them to open the internet for me
Then i was asked to tell them to please change my line from bridge mode to router mode.
Lucky for me i spoke to an excellent consultant that told me the technician gave me ridiculous actions to perform.
She escalated this for me and my line was resolved the next day and the technician admitted that she ran the test
wrong. This was an issue i had whilst the upgrade was in progress.

Dude - your CRC is sky high - SNR is LOW and attenuation is HIGH. How far are you from a ISAM or DSLAM?

Have you tried a new POTS filter?

You may stay closer but what route does the copper go and they should be able to tell you how far.

Amazing how the Technician that had worked on this call has not told me this.
They close the close and dont bother to feed back to me.
No, lets try 8 megs or lets check out the error on the line.
I have asked the 10210 guys to run a test for me and they say the test on the line failed.
So why the hell isnt the technician fixing it.
I have logged a repeat fault it seems like a regular CRK to me, i dont know who the hell actually cares.

Anyways , yeh SNR is crazy , it shows 6.1 but it can drop to 4 at times.
According to calculations i have done on speedguide.net i am about 3.1km
Telkom say i am 2.8km (this was a test they ran)
The CRC is an issue, yes - curious to see where you see that on the Trendnet modem TEW-658BRM
I have a new pots filter on the jack for the phone.
ADSL RJ11 goes directly in to the box on the wall.

To think i was 4 kilometers away in my last location but i got 6 meg (speedtest read 5.2) ping test read quality of B.
I also remember getting 400kb/s or less. So maybe that speaks to attenuation because 6 meg i should be able to have gotten more than 400 kb/s ?
I do remember that my attenuation there was 55-56.

Some feedback after escalating the reference number.
Attenuation improved by more or less 6 db. Instead of 43 i now get 37.
SNR Margin is also a little better which is sitting at 7.5 down to 6.8 instead of 6.1 down to 4.3
Hope this helps, so i will be checking and running some tests.
