Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane turned against the party’s most influential constituency – whites - in his Heritage Day address near Soweto on Saturday.

Maimane‚ whose sharp tongue had always been reserved for the ANC‚ instructed white members of the party to start learning to speak African languages.

There are few white DA leaders who speak African languages comfortably. Among those who can are Western Cape Premier Helen Zille‚ Nelson Mandela Bay Metro mayor Athol Trollip and and Gauteng leader Mike Moriarty.

SA’s most valuable resources are our people, says Maimane

Maimane in his address at a disused mine at Langlaagte‚ where several illegal miners died underground recently‚ was almost tempted to make it compulsory for DA members to learn to speak other languages other than English and Afrikaans.

"Perhaps English is your first language or maybe Afrikaans is your first language‚ I just want to ask something‚ assemblief mense. We are not making it a law‚ I am asking nicely. If we are going to celebrate Heritage Day‚ please make it a point that you learn another language.

"Because it connects us as a people‚ it says we are human beings‚ learn another language.

"Get into other spaces you have never been before. Under this DA leadership we must break down the spatial legacy so that others can get the opportunities reserved for some.”

Perhaps with a view of wresting political power from the ANC in the 2019 elections‚ Maimane emphasised that it is through language that the DA can connect with the majority of South Africans.
Link.

FU maimane.

I speak German, English and a little bit Russian.

Why?

Because it's relevant. Why on fcks earth would I want to spend time learning a dead end language that lacks common words and won't benefit you one bit in the business world.

He should tell people to start learning English so our president doesn't make a fool of this country.

How about the DA help with this by getting some South African languages on something like Duolingo?

guys, so what is the problem?

Where does he say it has to be an African language?

would be nice to understand what others say about me .
Image thier faces if you tjirp them back in thier own language

My guess is this is just politics.

He is trying to get rid of the 'white party' DA image to make sure to get more votes come national elections.

you don't get the point here. it's about human communications not business.;)

I'd much rather learn some Mandarin. Maybe a bit of German, or even a bit of Russian. I already know Afrikaans, so that is an African language.

DA supporters like we have here on MyBB are the ones who are dragging DA down. Maybe Maimane should think long and hard about that because it is supporters like that who are holding DA to ransom and preventing it from growing.

I'm more than happy to learn another African language (my mother tongue is already an African language and the third most widely spoken one in South Africa: Afrikaans)

Before I invest the time and effort though, I would like to know I'll make use of this newly acquired skill, so please, pretty please, save the country from the abyss so we don't all need to leave someday ...

Reality and voting numbers show a very different story. The DA is growing all the time

I'll invest in another African language on the provision that I be made to feel welcome here. No more chasing whites away talk, not even once, otherwise I might just as well learn an additional European language.
