Cape Town - A drag racer and four passengers were arrested after shots were fired at members of the City of Cape Town’s Ghost Squad after a high speed chase through Athlone on Friday night.

The officers spotted the blue Open Astra at 23:15 during an operation on Klipfontein, a known hotspot for illegal racing.

Traffic services spokesperson Maxine Jordaan said the car’s headlights were off and officers attempted to stop the car.

The driver refused to pull over and a high speed chase ensued.

“The suspects were pursued through Klipfontein Road, Calendula Road, Ruby Road, through Seventh Avenue until they eventually drove into a dead end in Eighth Avenue. The suspect tried to take evasive action and reversed into the oncoming patrol car in an attempt to evade capture,” she said.

“Both vehicles came to a halt on impact. The left rear passenger in the Opel Astra then fired multiple shots at the officers from their car.”

The bullets struck the left passenger door of the Ghost Squad members’ car.

“The officers then jumped out of their immobilised vehicle, drew their firearms and retaliated. No persons were injured during the exchange of fire.

“The driver of the vehicle and its four occupants ran on foot and tried to evade capture. The officers arrested the four men, but the female suspect escaped on foot.”

Two guns - including a pellet gun - were recovered.

The men face numerous charges including attempted murder and resisting arrest.

a drag racer with four passengers, makes sense

Well to be fair, the car is probably pimped, so probably they just assuming.

But then again, drag racers need to get to races and their friend need to be there too...

Anyway, whether a racer, up to no good, driving around with switched off lights, fleeing from the cops and shooting at them. Or is speeding all drag racers only flaw and otherwise they are model citizens, not involved in any other criminal activities?

I doubt these guys were drag racers, from my experience when going racing your friends take their own cars and you maybe have one passenger as an extra pair of eyes.

I'm going to assume that the car is either modified to the nine's and therefore the statement.

Or it was simply a high speed case.

Or they were leaving an illegal drag race meeting in a highly modified car and therefore classified as drag racers.

Does it really matter?

Exactly; who cares if they were the real McCoy or not; they still broke multiple laws that night.

it may not matter to you, but I seriously doubt these guys were drag racers. The car probably had some RICE and the occupants were more likely gangsters than drag racers.

as for being highly modified, unless they attached a huge turbo to the car I doubt the car was highly modified.

If you are still running NA mods in this age you deserved to be laughed at.

Again I fail to see how any of that matters.

Anyone doing a robot to robot race in a Citigolf is by definition drag racing.

well this guy wasn't drag racing now was he, so by definition he cannot be a drag racer, if we use your definition

were you there? who drag races with 4 passengers in their vehicle?

Who cares?
The fact is this person (these people) tried to outrun the cops and then shot at them. They could've been nuns, doesn't matter.
Clearly they're not the best caliber of people when they shoot at cops.
So let's move on past this already....

well if they were nuns, then the title would probably suggest that, but from the article nothing suggests the driver is a drag racer

So instead of caring about people shooting at cops, you're worried about whether they were or weren't drag racers?
Alrighty...carry on.
