The Skoda Octavia vRS has been revealed in facelifted form, shortly after the revised standard car was revealed.

Skoda’s new performance flagship receives the new front-end styling and dual-headlights of the facelifted Octavia, along with a 9bhp power boost for the 2.0 TSI engined vRS. Performance of the diesel Octavia remains the same.

The new Skoda Octavia RS 245 delivers 180 kW (245 PS) - this is 11 kW (15 PS) more than the previous top-of-the-range RS variant had to offer. Most powerful Skoda Octavia vRS 245 revealed in Geneva

With a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine producing 15bhp more than the old car, this is the most potent Octavia produced yet

The Skoda Octavia vRS 245 is the most potent variant of the brand’s mid-range model produced yet thanks to a 15bhp boost in power.

Revealed at the Geneva motor show, the facelifted Octavia's turbocharged 2.0-litre engine has been uprated to produce 242bhp and 273lb ft of torque, which is a 15bhp and 15lb ft improvement on the old vRS 230.

This trims the car’s 0-62mph dash to 6.6sec, shaving a tenth of a second off the 230’s time. The Octavia vRS 245 estate takes 6.7sec, which is also a tenth quicker than its older sibling. The saloon can reach 155mph while the estate tops out at 153mph.

As before, the car comes with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, but a new seven-speed dual-clutch DSG is offered with the model for the first time. Drive is sent to the front axle via a standard-fit electronic limited slip differential, which can brake the inside wheel to boost traction.



The vRS sits 14mm lower than regular Octavias and its rear track is 38mm wider than the old 230. The chassis settings can be adjusted along with the drivetrain’s characteristics via the drive modes, which cycle from normal to performance modes. The system’s effectiveness is heightened when optional dynamic chassis control technology is fitted.

Included with the 245 is a long list of cabin technology and driver assist programmes. The car is offered with a 9.2in touchscreen infotainment system and wi-fi connectivity. Voice control and inductive smartphone charging technology top the list options, while the Skoda connect app enables users to control features such as windows and door locks via their phone.

Added to the vRS is adaptive cruise control technology and Trailer Assist, which can steer and brake the car when reversing with a trailer. There’s also emergency braking technology to avoid impacts with obstacle and pedestrians, Blind Spot Detect, Rear Traffic Alert and Crew Protect Assist, which closes windows and the sunroof in the event of an impending collision and tensions driver and passenger seatbelts.

Sales will commence shortly after the show, with prices set to increase slightly on the old 230, which costed from £25,130 for the saloon and £26,330 for the estate.

Should I buy one?

No. At least not one in this spec, anyway. If you want an Octavia vRS 245, make sure you tick the option box for the DCC suspension. Without it, the car can’t quite make its mind up as to what it wants to be. With it, you’re offered a wide window of options that are able to satisfy those after comfort and those wanting poise. And since most of these will be sold through PCP deals, the added premium will equate to an extra pint of overpriced craft beer (should that be your thing) a week. So it’s easily justifiable - and a real surprise that more people haven't ticked the DCC box.

Whether you should opt for a 245 over rivals such as its group stablemate, the Golf GTI Performance, or models such as the Ford Focus ST, will be based entirely on preference. If you rank value for money, practicality and point-to-point pace above all else, you need look no further. If you’re after a more engaging package, the vRS can’t quite challenge for class honours.

What you'll like:

• Explosive performance from the 2.0L turbo-petrol. Fast DSG too
• Sharp handling, solid stability & strong brakes. As good as a FWD can get
• Top quality interior with enough space, sporty seats & a cavernous 590-liter boot
• Loaded with features & tech (XDS+ differential, adaptive LED headlamps…)
• 5 star NCAP rating. Safety kit includes 8 airbags, ESP and more
• Well-priced. Totally worth the premium over the regular Octavia
• Sportiness & practicality in one package. Work on weekdays, play on weekends

What you won't:

• Ride quality is noticeably firmer than the regular Octavia's
• Powerful engine guzzles fuel in the city. Also, runs best on pricey high-octane petrol
• Steering feel from the EPS is missing (it's precise though)
• No manual gearbox like the 1st & 2nd-gen vRS
• Unusually tall floor hump makes things uncomfortable for the 5th occupant
• Global car's dynamic chassis control would've been great to have on our roads
• Concerns about long-term reliability & Skoda’s ill-famed service network

Skoda Octavia vRS Challenge adds more kit and chassis tech

Black trim inside and out, racing-inspired limited-slip differential and lap timer define sportiest vRS yet

Skoda has launched a fully loaded special edition of its Octavia vRS hot family car, called the vRS Challenge.

The new version of the hot family car features a claimed £4535 worth of extra equipment over the standard vRS while costing just £2460 more. It's available in both hatchback and estate forms.

The extra features are mostly aesthetic, with the vRS Challenge featuring the same 242bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine featured in the vRS 245 DSG. This means the Challenge will crack 0-62mph in around 6.6sec in hatchback form and puts out 273lb ft of torque.

That being said, the vRS Challenge does come with a motorsport-inspired VAQ limited-slip differential, which is capable of transferring increased engine power to whichever front wheel has the most grip under cornering. The vRS Challenge also comes with dynamic chassis control (DCC), which is an £850 option on the standard model. Customers can choose between a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Visual changes are mostly to the exterior, including 19in Xtreme black alloy wheels, a black-trimmed sports exhaust, black folding door mirrors and black vRS badging.

Inside, the vRS Challenge is fitted with electronically adjustable figure-hugging Alcantara seats that are also heated in the front. There’s also keyless entry and start and a trip computer complete with a lap timer. Otherwise, equipment such as sat-nav, wi-fi and LED interior lighting are shared with the standard vRS.

The vRS Challenge is available from today at Skoda dealers, priced from £30,085 for the hatchback and £31,285 for the estate.

Damn. I crave hot estate/touring/avant cars like these. Shame there isn't much of a market for them here in SA.

I rather like how the Skoda cars look. A bit boxy .... but they make it work. I dig.
