A long and violent year in Chicago ended with a record number of shootings and the most homicides in two decades, police say. The Windy City saw 3,550 shooting incidents and 762 murders last year, a grim total that works out to an average of more than two murders and nearly 10 shootings every single day. Homicides in Chicago jumped to their highest level since 1996, when 796 were recorded, according to historical data from the Chicago Police Department. Last year's total represents a 57 percent increase over 2015, the biggest spike in murders in Chicago in 60 years, according to the Associated Press.

Shootings reached a record level since police began tracking them in 2011, rising nearly 50 percent over last year and nearly doubling since 2013. The number of shooting victims jumped to 4,331. The historic murder total drew a rebuke from President-elect Donald Trump, who said that federal law enforcement should be brought in to help with the crisis.

The drumbeat of deadly violence in Chicago brought stories of personal tragedy to national attention:Nykea Aldridge, a mother of four and the cousin of NBA star Dwyane Wade, was shot dead in August after being caught in crossfire while pushing her baby in a stroller on Chicago's South Side.In November, the 15-year-old grandson of U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., was shot dead over a pair of gym shoes.Tragically, dozens of children were caught up in the mayhem. In July, a 7-year-old girl was shot at a vigil for a 14-year-old boy killed earlier on the same day. The wounded 7-year-old was driven to the hospital by a woman, Ashake Banks, whose 7-year-old daughter was fatally shot in 2012.

'Spiraling Out of Control'

ABC News contributor John Cohen, a law enforcement and homeland security expert whose roles have included counterterrorism coordinator for the Department of Homeland Security, described the violence in Chicago as "spiraling out of control." Beyond Chicago, he said, “a growing number of major cities are receiving a significant increase in robberies, homicides and aggravated assaults.”

He cited three factors he believes may be behind the uptick in violence:

1. An increase in gang activity and violent behavior by career criminals.

2. An increase in the availability of illegal guns, coupled with an increase in criminals' willingness to use them.

3. And an increase in the reluctance by law enforcement to engage in proactive, violence prevention policies. Such hesitancy, Cohen said, is because "officers of various ranks are worried they will respond to a split-second decision and end up being the next person blasted all over the media and will lose their job."

Officers respond to their calls for service and do what they can, Cohen said, but they are "hesitant to be proactive" and "target violent criminals." Criminals sense any hesitancy, Cohen said, and believe they are less likely to be stopped. Chicago police superintendent Eddie Johnson told the AP recently that officers have become more careful, partly because they're concerned about viral videos. Johnson added at a news conference last week that police officers are not the reason for the heightened violence in Chicago; he said over 8,000 guns were recovered in 2016 and all those encounters put cops at risk.

Empowered' Gang Members

There is no simple explanation for why the violence is so extreme, Johnson told reporters last week, but he pointed to the prevalence of gang activity. He also noted that the "the anti-police rhetoric" in Chicago and across the country "has emboldened and actually empowered these gang members to do what they do."

Gang members may believe community residents will take their side instead of the police's, he added.

Sounds like a Monday morning in JHb to me...

Pfft, that's nothing...

Link

In 2015, Cape Town registered 2,451 homicides
Durban registered 1,237 homicides in a population of 3.44 million people
Johannesburg registered 1,344 homicides in a population of 4.43 million people

And we hardly even ever hear about any of it. So Chicago is a pretty good place for a holiday if you ask me.

An increase in the availability of illegal guns, coupled with an increase in criminals' willingness to use them.

I know, lets ban legal gun owners from owning guns. That will stop those law abiding criminals...

Come on Alan
You know what it is , I know what it is , many others know what it is
WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TELL THE TRUTH !

Why not look at homicides in Washington State in 2016
Then have a look at the demographic make up of the state ( am I allowed to use that word -- demographic ? )

Then do a comparison with the state of Illinois

You could even go further and compare SEATTLE and CHICAGO

You could go ever much further and do a crime GIS survey ( street by street )
You could then do a means , income and assets assessment
What about an unmarried mothers and single mothers test ?
What about a -- family members in prison test ?
What about a -- dependent on addictive substances test ?

Do NOT believe the cr@p from the Chicago MSM -- powerful tools exists which can provide every statistic about a population you ever wanted to know.

Problem IS
The truth is too HOT for PC American politicians !
It would probably cost a lot less and be more resource effective to send all the perps to -- LIBERIA !
NOT allowed to say that !

Um, I'll have a go. Without looking at any demographic statistics, I have no doubt that by far the majority of victims and perpetrators of violent crime in Chicago are black. I'd also be willing to bet that of the black victims of violence in Chicago less than or around 5% of them were at the hands of the police. I'm further willing to bet that something like 90% of those were habitual, violent criminals and that 95% of them were resisting arrest.

I'd also just like to say to all BLM supporters and sympathisers: you are stupid and ignorant.

But where are the Black Lives Matter protests?

Another city were black lives no longer matter

In 2016, Baltimore's second-deadliest year on record,

By October, that number had doubled. The total of 318 killings by year's end made 2016 the second-deadliest year per capita on record, second only to 2015, when violence spiked after the death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray. The violence of 2016 flared up in normally quiet enclaves all across the city, but was seen mostly in the same downtrodden neighborhoods time and again. The Western District, for example, saw 60 homicides in 2016.

No surprise why this is the case after BLM and MSM demonizing the police....

Already beset by a public outcry over the high-profile death of a black man in police custody and a rising murder rate, Baltimore's police department is facing another headache: it's shrinking fast.

The number of uniformed officers in the mid-Atlantic city fell 6.1 percent last year and has shrunk by even more in the first half of this year, according to police data seen by Reuters and not previously reported.

The fall in 2015 was the biggest decline in police numbers among nine comparably-sized U.S. cities reviewed by Reuters. The police force in Detroit and El Paso shrank by 4.9 percent and 4.3 percent, respectively, while Denver and Las Vegas saw increases of over 5 percent.

But where are the Black Lives Matter protests?

Seems the same story as in SA, blacks killing blacks(or beeps, killing beeps) is OK. If a white says something to, or about , or touch a black, all hell will break lose. And we know cops aren't involved either.

Absolutely impossible. Cannot happen, the article must be false.
Everyone knows that Chicago has some of the harshest gun laws in the USA..handguns are banned. So impossible for there to be shootings. Whatcha gonna do? Ban more guns?
Pffft.
