question for any isp or person out there thats knows why exactly and how its possible for pre paid adsl to roll over into the next month VS 'normal' adsl that can't.

isn't bought usage or paid for usage on both accounts the same thing ?

...then theres the question on what happens to the paid for usage on the non prepaid - where does that go to ?

Usage on the non prepaid - most ISP's only form of profit.

You will notice that prepaid is normally a certain percentage more expensive. This usually corresponds with the percentage of unused usage. The ISP makes the same amount of profit then.

ok its a start - but how is it possible for pre paid to be pre paid and carry its unused data over to next month and not the non pre paid.

It's the same thing, ISP's including telscum are capitalizing on it, so who the hell is going to listen to us? ;)

ISP's only pay Telkom for what actually gets used.

i see.

so if i pay R999 for 30G from openweb

thats R33.30 per gig

of which i only use 20Gig - i should have paid only R666

and openweb pockets R333 ?

I don't think so. OpenWeb, thanks the gods that it has a noob user and then it uses the R333 to cover other operating costs & make a tiny profit.

I'm guessing the ISPs margins (except Helkom) are so low at the moment that they are not really pocketing much either way. Besides, who the hell does not use the cap (excluding me grandma)?

cool enough if they don't

still doesn't explain how pre paid rolls over...

...you exactly each month use 100% cap or 130% ? - only so much to download and then nothing else to add to the que..

Whatever,

ISP's make a killing off bandwidth that doesn't roll over.

silence as an answer should tell us something or nothing ;)

IS and SAIX billing system differ....so no matter if u use 20gigs or 1meg on ur 30gig account from IS based account, the ISP makes the same amount...IS just get extra free bandwidth for the month ;)

But saix based accounts are billed per gig...so yeah...if someone offered u a 3gig account and u dont use it for the month...well I am guessing the ISP gets the profit?

I don't know about that tera. I just don't think there are lots of people not maxing out their cap. (Everyone I know does, and surely everyone on this forum does too).

Nameite: I think IS is probably paying a fixed amount for their satellite connection. So the income from the ISP is fixed and the costs are fixed.

btw, I'm speculating here. I don't even have adsl yet. (Ordering this week)

GL on the odering - let us hope you get it FAST :)

Thanks Necuno. But thats less SAT3 bandwidth for you... Maybe everyone with adsl should make it a standard policy to advise noobs to stick with dial-up. :)

maybe...

so there you have it pre paid *just* rolls over and non prepaid don't - even if its basically same server, how does the actual cap or usage be so different from each other.

my idea on prepaid adsl is different.

take a prepaid telephone line for voice , allow one via IVR the option to buy 3gb or so at XXX a month and in doing that you get furnished with a Telkom / SAIX uid and pass for adsl and your line itself gets hooked up into a dslam.

the dslam part is complicated since they got to enable a port for you and will only do this if you have a permanent line , so you got the current R200 a month or more for this contractual and physical limitation.

if you don't top up the "airtime" then your adsl line gets "cancelled" a few days later.

if you think about the HSDPA datacards from MTN ( my cellular sp ) then one can do this with any prepaid sim , granted there is a calendar month for the bundle to "expire" before a new one can be loaded on the same number , but with the cost of starter packs being next to nothing it works well.
