Optoma unveils 4K Ultra Short Throw laser projector

$19,999 sheesh... Here I was hoping I can get a quality projector cheaper than a decent TV

The company also introduced an ultra-compact pico projector – the Optoma IntelliGo – with LED illumination and an Android operating system and app store.

Feature creep much?

For same size per rand the projector will always win.

But a decent projector is going to cost you 20k plus regardless and until the Texas Instruments chipset comes out a 4K one is 50k minimum and quite crap at that so best to buy the big TV instead.

By definition is a projector is going to be many, many meters away from you - how important is 4K in a projector anyway?

Genuine question

Bigger screen means the need for more pixels.

Less pixels equal lower pixel density. Like going back three generations of SMartphones compared to same size SMartphones now.

So 4K is probably more important to projection than any TV.

But we really need to stop calling it 4K. 4K is just a resolution.

UHD is the new TV standard and is about a hell of a lot more than just resolution.

It's tough to say really...
I use a 1080P projector on a 120" screen from about 2-3 Meters away and can honestly say due to the more "fuzzy" scattering nature you get from a DLP chip and projection surface you don't notice the pixels as much as you would on a crisper display like an LCD screen. You also benefit from 4K resolution content even if your screen does a quarter of that due to the improvement in compression (averaging 4 pixels to give you one makes video content look amazing)

I'm assuming there would be much less light scattering with a laser projector so I can just imagne the image detail you'll get from a 4K projector like this must be amazing.
I wonder what the maintenance on a laser projector is like, that's one thing I hate about my DLP, it takes a while to rack up 4000+ hours on the lamp but that day always comes and takes your credit card for a fat ride down poverty lane.
