Good 4X4 bakkie

Good day everyone

Complements of the season. May 2017 be the year you get that promotion, win the lotto and all the good things you need.

My old man is looking for a good reliable bakkie. He wants a cash sale so his budget is R220000 for a really good deal (low millage, fairly new). His options are

1. Toyota Hilux 4X4 D4D 3.0
2. Toyota Hilux 4X4 D4D 2.5
3. Nissan Hardbody 4X4 2.4

He wants manual, diesel, double cab and with as much extras as possible (canopy, towbar).

Any advice, comments and suggestions are welcome.

OK .. I'm a Toyota fanboi, and my daily drive is a Diesel D4D Hilux 4x4 bakkie. I do a lot of dirt road driving. I agree about taking the Nissan Hardbody off the list, but take a good look at the Isuzu if price is a major issue. Toyota's are overpriced, but they are the "best of breed"

Yep - engine in under performing. My father had one for 2 years and regretted having a 2.4l; he's much happier with 3l.

To add (or take off the list), the Toyota Hilux is a hijack risk. Insurance premiums are sky high on them for this very reason.

Yes, I agree. But the risk iro the Hilux is quite different from Johannesburg to say Cape Town. Depending on where the vehicle will be predominantly driven/kept, it may be a negligible factor.

Out of those: 3.0 D4D

But there are other choices too you should be considering
 
I would go with Toyota, it is likely the best in the range even though it is a bit overpriced. I assume the Ranger is out of the price bracket.

I agree.
The 250 DTeq Isuzu 4x4 is fairly solid.
However you may have to look at an earlier generation due your price range. If you can get a good 5 year old DTeq model which should have had all its services and a lowish mileage, you should be good to go.
 
Hilux, though it is a hijack risk, my dad has had 2 stolen in the last 2 years. That being said, it's the best option.

3.0 D4D is the way to go. Why manual? And why 4x4? 4x2 is good enough for most situations, though if he has a good reason for a 4x4 then definitely don't compromise.

That budget for something fair new with low mileage, eish.
 
Agree on Isuzu being the other option. I think my mates 2.5D has close to a million kms on it and still going strong.

The 2.4 Hardbody is petrol. Diesel engines are the old 3.0 or the newer 2.5.

Low millage, fairly new and 4x4, it will have to be a really good deal.
