The all-new 6th* Gen Polo will only be announced/shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September yet already there is an uncovered model spotted in SA. When official pics & details are shown later in the year thread will be updated.

*Note article states 7th Gen but Wiki history states Polo 6R & 6C is a Mk5 Polo. So hence new model will be Mk6.

Spy pics: New Volkswagen Polo (2017) spotted in SA

The 7th-generation Volkswagen Polo – scheduled to make its world debut at the Frankfurt Show – has been photographed in South Africa. Built on the MQB-platform that underpins the Golf, it is longer, wider (thus bigger) and much more sophisticated than the current car… and we expect it to make its debut on the local market early in 2018.

Last year we spotted a next-generation Volkswagen Polo and GTI derivative undergoing testing in Germany and expected the newcomer to debut at the recent Geneva Show, but now it seems that the Polo will make its show debut at Frankfurt (although some media publications say official photos and specifications will be available as soon as June, around the time when the hatchback will go into production in Uitenhage for the European market).

The Polo Mk6 rides on the smallest version of the flexible MQB platform (AO), which underpins a number of compact products in the Volkswagen/Audi family. By virtue of its larger dimensions, the notably lower 7th-generation Polo (claimed to be up to 200 mm longer, which will make it lengthier than the Golf 4) is, importantly, much more spacious inside, yet it is about 70 kg lighter than the current car.

Given the recent (overseas) introductions of the Ford Fiesta and Kia Rio, both of which feature improved interior finishes and infotainment functions, the Polo will need to have a substantially upmarket cabin to remain at the top of its segment in terms of quality…

This pre-production model looks very close to the finished product. Its frontal appearance is certain more distinctive than the current car's.

To that end, there will be a soft-touch dashboard fascia, strategic padding and expensive-looking trim elements, and front seats sourced from the facelifted Golf, a British publication suggested.

Active Info Display (Volkswagen’s all-digital instrument cluster), a new generation of touchscreen infotainment systems, Park Pilot automatic parking and keyless entry will be optional, plus it is not inconceivable that electronically controlled adaptive suspension could be available.

As far as the engine lineup is concerned, on the turbopetrol side there will be a 1.0-litre TSI (available in various states of tune), while the 1.2-litre TSI engine could be replaced by the Golf’s 1.5-litre unit (with cylinder shutdown technology, still under consideration for South Africa). In Europe, the 1.5-litre TDI turbodiesel will be superseded by a 1.6-litre TDI unit (local models are 1.4-litre units).

The more streamlined rear appearance hides an enlarger luggage bay capacity.

Meanwhile, the Polo GTI derivative will either be powered by 147 kW 2.0-litre TSI or an upgraded (more powerful) version of the current 1.8-litre powerplant. Transmission options for the range will comprise 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission on higher-spec versions.

In South Africa, Volkswagen South Africa recently introduced a Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI R-Line derivative as the current range enters its run-out phase. It remains to be seen whether the current Vivo range will be replaced by product based on a scaled back 6th-generation Polo, but it seems highly likely...

What we know about the next-gen Volkswagen Polo

The sixth generation of the Volkswagen Polo is set to be revealed at Frankfurt this year. According to information sourced by Autocar this new Polo’s design greatly separates it from the current one. A lot of the changes relate to the Seat Ibiza which was revealed a few months ago.

In terms of design, the new Polo is expected to be a lot more dynamic than the current one in order to broaden its sales appeal. This design will consist of redesigned headlamps, a more prominent sloping roofline. A general idea of the design can be drawn from the leaked image above.

Much like the Ibiza, the PQ25 architecture makes way for the new MQB platform which has been altered for the AO segment. This means that the new Polo will be longer and wider, most notably along the wheelbase and track in order to provide more interior space.

Both three and five door models will still be available, although a three-door is unlikely to reach South Africa. A CrossPolo has not yet been confirmed or denied.

The interior of the Polo will be completely redesigned with a strong focus on perceived quality. Certain controls and front seats will be sourced from the recently facelifted Golf (due in SA this May). Optional extras will include a virtual instrument cluster, a new infotainment system and an automatic parking feature.

The engine lineup for the new model will be drastically cut down. The turbocharged 1,2-litre petrol engine is expected to be replaced by the 1,0-litre turbo-triple mill which will be available with four power outputs (we will most likely only gain the 81 kW variant).

Much like with the facelifted Golf, the new turbocharged 1,5-litre petrol unit also replaces the 1,4 TSI in international markets but here in South Africa the old unit will remain, for now. This is likely due to financial reasons and the state of our fuel quality.

The Polo GTI will also live on. Rumours suggest that this time around it will be fitted with a turbocharged 2,0-litre petrol engine that will deliver north of 150 kW. A Polo R is almost certainly not going to happen.

The current turbodiesel 1,4-litre three-cylinder engine will make way for an updated version of the 1,6-litre four-cylinder. This will likely be the last diesel Polo to see the production line as the generation after this will aim towards hybridisation.

Transmission options will remain the same. The MQB platform is equipped for all-wheel drive but this will not see its way on the new Polo.

With a simple induction kit, down pipe and stage 1 flash, the new 1.8 GTI pushes north of 185kw easily, so expect to see a few 200+ KW Polo's on the road next year.

Nice to see VW leaving room for that with the big capacity engines.

New Volkswagen Touareg and Polo spotted in SA!

Yesterday we revealed some information regarding the sixth generation Volkswagen Polo. A diligent reader of CAR, Martin Swart, responded with the attached images of the new Polo and what we can only assume to be the new Touareg. The images were said to be taken at OR Tambo International Airport in Johanessburg.

As to be expected, the Polo looks much like the leaked image that was attached to the first story. The rear shows off lines that aren’t too far off from the current model. Those rear taillamps, however bear a striking resemblance to the ones found on the Q2.

More interesting about this batch of images, however is the mysterious SUV which bears a striking resemblance to the T-Prime GTE concept which we anticipated would bear the bones for the new Touareg when it was revealed.

As of now we have not heard any news regarding the next-generation Touareg’s design, engine options or platform which is why this particular find is a rather exciting one.

Martin Swart came close to snapping pictures of the interior for us but unfortunately the Volkswagen police covered their prized possessions swiftly after he arrived.

VAG is becoming boring. Look at "new" Q5.

I really like that Polo, but the Touareg looks a bit Toyota'ish. Hopefully looks better in the metal.

New Volkswagen Polo - pictures show undisguised car

Volkswagen is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to be best in the supermini class; new pictures show what appears to be the production model

Pictures have emerged online of what appears to be the production version of the new Volkswagen Polo.

The images show a completely undisguised Polo, reportedly in South Africa, ahead of its official debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

Volkswagen is taking aim at the new Ford Fiesta with its new sixth-generation Polo.

I can if you like.

I like that new Touareg, looks to be better designed than the Q7.

The Polo will take some getting used to, which will happen rather quickly.

I hope this means an updated Polo Vivo is nearby to!? They surely are not going to keep selling the Vivo with the same damn 15yearold 9N design.

Bigger than a Golf 4, damn that is growing fast. I'm sure this will be a top seller soon. Saffers love these things.
