So I came across this article on the new Toyota 86 pricing:
http://www.wheels24.co.za/NewModels/this-is-how-much-the-2017-toyota-86-will-cost-in-sa-20170404

86 2.0 Standard - R449 900
86 2.0 High - R494 900
86 2.0 High auto - R519 400

That can't be right, I think. I'm SURE I remember thinking that the 86 is a veritable bargain. In fact, wasn't the entry-level under R300 000?

I find this article from 2012, and it turns out I wasn't crazy: http://www.cars.co.za/motoring_news/toyota_86_price_revealed_for_south_africa/683/#.WOPh8_n5jIU

Toyota 86 R298 500
Toyota 86 High Spec Manual R329 400
Toyota 86 High Spec Automatic R346 500

So the entry-level model is now a hefty 50% more expensive than it was only five years ago.

Let that sink in a bit.

So much for Toyota's affordable boy racer. Nobody in their right mind will buy one now, STILL with no turbo at that price. It used to be cheap and cheerful, now it's just expensive and underpowered.

Farewell Toyota 86: you were a legend.

Have you looked at most cars lately?

In 2011 I paid 186k for a Kia Cerato 1.6 with a few extras (tow bar, metallic paint etc). Its now 300k excluding extras.

62% increase in 6 years odd.

Thanks ANC.

Yup...It's hefty jump over the past few years however to put it into context it's not a big jump wrt the 2016 model.

"Next up is the High specification, also in manual, at R494 900 (up R6 500), while the High in automatic form again tops the range, at R519 400 (also an increase of R6 500). These two High models feature items such as LED daytime running lights, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, a starter button and a small spoiler."

Article was pasted in the MY2017 GT86 thread:

The "affordable" driver's car is long gone.

Yeah I know, this definitely isn't a Toyota 86 problem only - it just really drove the point home for me because the 86 used to be a great bargain (a sporty car for less than R300K - whoohoo!). All the Kias and Hyundais have really been hammered in terms of pricing. Who here remembers that the ix35 used to start at around R270 000? Now most of the Tucson range costs over R400 000.

Now a Cerato 1.6 is...*cough* starting R300k...And R300k jobbie is close to poverty spec.

Ouch Fiesta, I could cry when I read that. I was a motoring journalist back when the new Cerato came out, and I remember being impressed at what it delivered ... and even then its R220 000 pricetag was quite hefty (I think that was for one of the higher-spec models).

Motoring journalist you say...you have piqued my interest. What publication or portal did you write for?

Or will that give the game away...lol

Lol, I have to maintain some mystique :P Say, off-topic (but it's my thread so I can be), do you know why the Top Gear magazine is back on the shelves (and with a new editor too - funnily enough I knew Andrew back in the day)? I thought they'd closed down just a couple months ago, and now they're back?

Lol fair point. I take it you no longer report on cars.

Just today I saw an Insta about the latest TG SA mag & I was like Dec 2016 was the "Final SA issue"...so what gives?! No idea...if you find out let me know

Yeah no, it's too depressing being a motoring journalist. You drive all the nice cars, get flown around the country to attend launches and stay in luxury hotels, and still get paid peanuts. Knowing what I know of the industry, it makes me even more sick when I see motoring journos talk about 'bargain' cars at R700K up (while they're driving around Picantos at home). Don't get me wrong, it's awesome for a young guy, but for me the writing was on the wall and I got out before I became one of the venerable, jaded ou toppies.

Toyota saw that there is not much competition in the segment that the 86 is in and they are overplaying their hand.

One used to be able to justify the 86 by saying "Well, it might be a bit underpowered but at least it's cheaper than a Golf GTI". Now, I'm not so sure. You can't say either of those things anymore, and I don't think anybody will buy an 86 over a new GTI anymore.

Exactly, funny how I was left with egg on my face sometime ago when announced to my colleagues that the 86 was a very affordable sports car, i quickly flipped out my motoring section of the Thursday Star, to show them how right I am,(not that they knew better anyway) only to be humbled by the more that 400k price for the base model.

I'm not sure that those that want a GTI would appreciate a GT86.

You're comparing those that eat at Spur versus those that go a fine restaurant.

Or put another way, GTI is about the straight line, GT86 is about the bends.

It all manufacturers are playing their had then.

R8 (2011) vs R14 (2017) to the $.
True everybody is taking their chances.

The rand can be 1:1 with the dollar tomorrow, i can assure you that you won't see bargains in cars anytime soon, South Africans don't really mind, give them balloon payment options and see your stock flying off the shelves.

The only people making that argument are the ones whose cars can't go fast in the straight lines :P

Remember the boot of the original 86, with that naked spare wheel just looking at you?

That car sure was compromised, but it was awesome for a Toyota and it was cheap.

I can't believe that in five years they couldn't even justify the increased price tag with a turbocharger.

I almost think they did it on purpose to encourage the modding community to make the car their own. The FRS/86/BRZ modding community is massive online. With people taking their modded 86s to track days.

No idea how the scene is in ZA though.

That was valid when it was still cheap, now it is just something else, not good enough for those who can afford it, too expensive for it's intended market.
