Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will use GNOME as its default desktop environment, and not Unity 8 — or even Unity 7.

In an extraordinary blog post that I have yet to fully digest, Mark Shuttleworth has announced that Canonical is to end its investment in Unity 8, Mir, Ubuntu for phones and tablets, and will no longer pursue its goal of “convergence”.
In a further striking admission Ubuntu’s founder adds that the Ubuntu desktop will ‘shift back to GNOME for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.’

Late April fools or not? Anyway sad to see the "convergence" that they showed off on some videos will not come to fruition. Unity 8 was delayed countless times so should've seen it coming. They probably spend loads of time on Unity.

That leaves only MS and Google working on converging mobile and desktop. Hopefully the Surface Phone comes sooner rather then later to stay ahead this time. Perhaps Google can also do something amazing with Andromeda.

Fun times ahead.
 
My 75 year old mom is quite used to Unity, will be teaching her a new DE soon...but learning new things is supposed to be good ;)
 
Gnome sucked after version 2 - but hell, Unity does too - so maybe this is good news
 
Ja could never get into Unity. I always use XUbuntu (Xfce)
