Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is world’s quickest SUV

Hellcat-engined Jeep produces 707bhp and can reach 60mph in 3.5sec; it out accelerates even Bentley's Bentayga

Jeep has launched the most powerful series production SUV to go on sale yet at the New York motor show. Called the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, it’s a 707bhp brute that can out accelerate a Range Rover SVR, Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S.

Using a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 that’s shared with the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, the Trackhawk also delivers 645lb ft of torque. The thick-chinned SUV can sprint from 0-60mph in 3.5sec - identical to a Jaguar F-Type SVR – and tops out at 180mph.

By comparison, the quickest of the aforementioned SUVs, the W12 engined Bentayga, is down on power by 107bhp and needs an extra half a second to hit 60mph. Although admittedly the luxury British SUV can make it to 187mph…

The Trackhawk uses an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends drive to all four wheels. An electronic limited-slip differential and beefed up rear axle work with the car’s launch control to enable its sports car-aping acceleration.

Braking is handled by Brembo 400mm front and 350mm rear discs that work with six and four-piston calipers respectively. The car sits on Bilstein adaptive dampers that can be adjusted through five drive modes, and 20in alloy wheels with 295-width Pirelli tyres.

To signify its muscle, the Trackhawk wears thick bumpers and a roof spoiler, and it sports quad-exit exhausts. Inside, deeply bolstered leather seats are accompanied by a 7in digital instrument cluster and 8.4in touchscreen, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto included.

The Trackhawk will sit above the 462bhp Grand Cherokee SRT, the current most potent Jeep, in the range. The Trackhawk is unconfirmed for Britain, but insiders are hopeful the model will make it here. If it does, expect a starting figure of more than £75,000.

Hellcat-powered 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk arrives with 707 horsepower

After what seems like forever, it has finally happened: the quickest Jeep ever is here. The Hellcat-powered Jeep Grand Cherokee has arrived, ending one of the worst-kept secrets of all time.

Making its formal debut this week at the New York auto show, the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has plenty to boast about as it stakes its claim on the performance mountain.

First and foremost, it has the full boat when it comes to power: yes, all 707 horsepower that the Challenger and Charger Hellcats have. There was concern in the performance community that the supercharged 6.2-liter's power output would be neutered in the Grand Cherokee due to the all-wheel-drive system's strength, but Jeep overcame that concern by modifying the full-time active transfer case with forged steel chain sprockets and a wider chain.

That transfer case is a single-speed active setup and there's an electronic limited-slip differential in the rear to help control the power.

With claims like 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, a quarter mile time of 11.6 seconds, and a top speed of 180 mph, we aren't about to argue with them.

Of course, to handle all this power and speed, the Grand Cherokee's brake system was upgraded heavily for Trackhawk duty. With 15.75-inch two-piece vented Brembo rotors up front clamped by 6-piston calipers plus 13.78-inch vented rotors in back, Jeep claims the Trackhawk can come to a standstill from 60 mph in just 114 feet.

Many driveline components have been upgraded for Trackhawk duty, from the 8-speed automatic transmission being bolstered to a strengthened rear drive shaft and new, stronger rear axle.

Like the Grand Cherokee SRT, the all-wheel-drive system has five modes—auto, sport, track, tow, and snow. Each modifies all-wheel-drive parameters plus transmission, paddle shifters, suspension, and electronic power steering programming.

Worried about handing the keys to your Trackhawk over to a valet? Like most high-performance vehicles these days, there's a valet mode which limits nearly everything. From power to modified shift points, the Trackhawk basically turns into a V-6-level Grand Cherokee.

While towing not its main mission in life, the Trackhawk is capable of lugging up to 7,200 pounds. For those keeping track, that's exactly the same as the Grand Cherokee SRT and the regular Grand Cherokee with its optional 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine.

Visually the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is what we expected. It's nearly identical to the Grand Cherokee SRT which was refreshed for 2017. Gone are the SRT's fog lights for better cooling, and out back there's a new quad exhaust setup that is sure to emit the sound of the devil.

Filling the wheel wells are 20-inch alloy wheels with a square tire setup from Pirelli. The 3-season P Zero Scorpion Verde tires are Z-rated 295/45s. For those wanting to save a decent amount of weight, an optional lightweight 20-inch forged alloy wheel option will be available. Jeep says that they save 12 pounds per corner over the standard setup.

Inside it's standard Grand Cherokee fare—albeit with some upgrades to remind drivers they're in a Trackhawk. There's now a 200-mph speedometer, Trackhawk-specific performance pages in the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system, and a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel with a Trackhawk logo on the bottom.

The standard nappa leather seats feature a distinctive Trackhawk logo on the headrests and they can be outfitted in a model-exclusive black and Dark Ruby Red color scheme. Front and rear seats are heated and front seats get ventilation.

Options are few, but they include a dual-pane panoramic sunroof, Dark Ruby Red seatbelts, a package that adds real metal accents inside, a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment center with a Blu-ray player, and an 825-watt Harmon/Kardon 19-speaker sound system with two subwoofers.

Like the rest of the 2018 Grand Cherokee lineup, the Trackhawk now includes standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto embedded in the latest version of FCA's 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system.

Despite having all the raw power in the world, the Trackhawk comes with a full setup of active safety tech: blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking.

The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk will begin tearing out of dealers in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Glad you are using the correct terminology also.

Wonder if it will also spil all its gearbox oil over the garage floor after a service, require one to constantly replace it's headlights bulbs, constantly lose various trim peices and rider harder than a HIlux with rocks for suspension.

FINALLY! I mean I can't even afford a normal Overland Jeep GC, but even I felt the wait for this Trackhawk, lol, due to some Jeep YouTuber I follow.

Meet Jeep's Trackhawk: the most powerful SUV ever...

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the new Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, which the brand bills as the most powerful production SUV ever built.

Its 6,2-litre supercharged V8 heart (yes, borrowed from the Dodge Challenger and Charger, in Hellcat flavour) is worth a whopping 527 kW and 874 N.m, sent to all four corners via a suitably upgraded eight-speed automatic transmission. That’s substantially more power than the 447 kW, W12-equipped Bentley Bentayga, and much more than all of the big Germans, too.

The obligatory 0-100 km/h time of this new Trackhawk? Somewhere in the region of 3,6 seconds, with the quarter-mile taking a claimed 11,6 seconds and top speed coming in at 290 km/h.

Built in Detroit, the 2018 Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is scheduled to arrive in Jeep showrooms in the US in the final quarter of 2017. No word yet on the (seemingly slim) possibility of local introduction.

Noteworthy features include an electronic limited-slip rear differential, a strengthened rear drive shaft, a stronger rear axle, launch control, a hefty Brembo braking system (with the largest standard front brakes ever offered on a Jeep), and five driving modes.

The Trackhawk derivative sets itself apart by riding 25 mm lower than non-SRT Grand Cherokee models, and comes complete with body-coloured wheelarch flares, side-sill cladding and a sculpted bonnet.

The signature seven-slot front grille is flanked by adaptive, bi-xenon headlamps with a gloss black background. The redesigned facia does without foglamps, which are replaced by vents for cooling and air induction. From the rear, the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk features a gloss black rear valence that draws attention to the (already hard-to-miss) quad exhaust tips.

The cabin, meanwhile, gains plenty of “light black chrome” finishes, a smattering of carbon-fibre, a seven-inch driver information display instrument cluster and a new 8,4-inch Uconnect touchscreen (with performance timers, gauge readouts and the like, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto).

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is certainly not the slowest SUV around, but thanks to the competition from Germany becoming tougher, Jeep has had to take drastic action. The result is this mighty thing - 523 kW and 881 Nm of pure American muscle.

Given how much effort the Germans have put into the performance SUV market, it makes perfect sense for the men at Jeep to send them packing with their tails between their legs. The BMW X5M/X6M, Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S and Porsche Cayenne Turbo S all have outputs around the 420 kW mark. Jeep looked to parent company FCA for a solution on how to match this trio, but they needn't look very far as a special engine already existed. The Dodge Charger/Challenger Hellcat is powered by a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine and this powertrain has racked up the awards since inception. Given the engine size and layout, transplanting it into the engine bay of a Grand Cherokee was fairly straight forward.

The numbers are staggering. Jeep claims the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is the most powerful and quickest SUV ever. Think of the German outputs hovering around the 420 kW mark... this Jeep has 523 kW and 881 Nm. 0-100 kph? 3.5 seconds! A quarter mile is smashed in 11.6 seconds and it'll run to a top speed of 290 kph. It's blatantly obvious Jeep didn't want to compete with the German performance SUVs, but rather obliterate them in all departments.

See, the Trackhawk isn't just about going fast in a straight line. With adaptive damping suspension from Bilstein and uprated brakes from Brembo, the Trackhawk aims to be quick in a sprint and when it comes to some curvy tarmac. These Brembos are the largest ever front brakes to be found on a Jeep. The eight-speed auto has been upgraded to cope with the additional shove and the quad exhausts and gaping front grille make it unmistakable.

Quad exhausts will emit a raucous V8 soundtrack. Also, the most common view of a Hellcat-powered Jeep as it thunders past.

The supercharged 6.2-liter “Hellcat-powered” Jeep Trackhawk almost looks low key parked near the Dodge Demon hyperbolic hype machine, but the performance claims are nothing short of outrageous. Especially when you remember we’re talking about a 5,363 pound SUV.

According to Jeep’s press release, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk (which is not officially designated “Jeep Hellcat”) generates 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque, which is just 5 lb-ft shy of the Challenger Hellcat’s claimed output.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk Reportedly Confirmed For South Africa

Jeep took the covers off their 707 horsepower Grand Cherokee Trackhawk in April this year and the first thing people were asking (South African’s) was if it would make it’s way to South Africa.

Well according to a very close Jeep South Africa source, they have decided that it will be coming to SA after all which is fantastic news for us petrol heads.

Initial indications point to an arrival early next year but don’t rule out something happening before then.

Pricing will be in the R1,6 to R1.8 million region depending on the exchange rate at the time.

As a reminder, the 6.2-litre supercharged V8 is capable of hurtling the big SUV to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds and holds the title for most powerful production SUV.

We are still waiting to hear an official word from Jeep SA so don’t get too excited before this happens.
