A striking colour for a striking car

The BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Yellow Edition - which will be produced in a limited run and go on sale in September 2017 - owes its striking appearance to a model-specific paint finish. The exclusive exterior shade Protonic Frozen Yellow shares its canvas with accents in Frozen Grey metallic. A sophisticated application process is employed to transfer the paint to the BMW i8's carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) bodywork. The silky-matt shimmer of the finish shines a particularly vivid spotlight on the plug-in-hybrid sports car's dynamic lines and flowing surface design. The special-edition model will sport newly designed 20-inch BMW i light-alloy wheels in W-Spoke design with mattpainted surfaces and mixed-size tyres.

Inside the special-edition model, contrast stitching in Yellow for the seat surfaces and centre console underlines the sporty and extravagant looks that dominate the cockpit design of the BMW i8. Yellow contrast stitching can also be found in the side panel trim and door cards, on the floor mats and in the lower section of the instrument panel. An anthracite-coloured headliner, grey seat belts, ceramic applications for the selector lever and iDrive Controller, and door sill strips with "Edition" inscriptions add the finishing touches to the exclusive interior ambience of the special-edition model.

BMW i cars claim an outstanding global market share

Like the BMW i8, which has grown into the world's most successful hybrid sports car due to its unmatched and richly enthralling blend of driving pleasure and sustainability, the pure-electric BMW i3 is a constantly expanding presence in international car markets. The i3 is the biggest-selling electric vehicle in the premium compact segment and has now achieved a significantly larger share of the overall electric vehicle market than the BMW brand occupies with conventionally powered cars.

Another contributory factor in the international success of BMW i cars are the innovative mobility services which make the experience of driving an electric car that much more pleasurable. These services are another example of how the BMW i brand is leading the way in establishing sustainable mobility in urban centres and beyond. For example, with its ChargeNow service, BMW i allows its customers convenient access to more than 65,000 charging stations in 29 countries. And the brand's Digital Charging Service has been quick to exploit - in intelligent, convenient and money-saving ways - the new possibilities in energy supply when charging from a home-mounted Wallbox.

All in all, BMW i embodies holistically sustainable electric mobility at its most relevant in areas far beyond the cars themselves.

BMW i8 Roadster previews updated i8

New lights and more power for facelifted i8, as well as a drop-top variant, spied here

The BMW i8 Spyder - the name which the i8 Roadster is likely to take - will herald the facelifted i8 range as its second model.

As can be seen from latest photos of the Spyder testing, the i8’s lights will be tweaked with a more intricate LED design, while in place of the standard i8’s tailgate, a pair of humps behind the driver and passenger add yet more visual drama; these have been adapted from the look of the BMW i Vision Future Interaction concept from the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

To lower the roof, drivers will need to manually remove it and stow it away. The roadster design will likely make it heavier than the i8 coupé, but it's not known how this will impact performance.

The roadster, like the facelifted coupé, could get a 10% power hike over the current generation which would take its output up to 420bhp using an upgraded petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. Currently, the i8 coupé is powered by a fettled turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine combined with a front-mounted synchronous electric motor.

Upgrades in the cabin are expected as well, with BMW's latest iDrive system with gesture control technology likely to be adopted.

The i8 coupé costs from £100,000, but the facelifted model is expected to have a slight price increase. This new roadster will be priced above the coupé, so an entry-level price of around £110,000 is expected.

BMW's i electric car sub-brand has also been testing a hot version of the i3 recently, while BMW has been boosted by a business deal with Intel and Mobileye to help development of autonomous vehicles. The latest BMW 7 Series and 5BMW 5 Series both have semi-autonomous driving capabilites, and upgrades to the latest i8 could also include the hybrid inheriting this technology.

HERE’S YOUR FIRST GLIMPSE OF THE NEW BMW I8 ROADSTER

The new BMW i8 Roadster is set to hit the market in 2018, and now the Munich-based automaker has provided the first official glimpse of the fresh open-top model.

On Monday morning, BMW posted a 21-second video to its various social media platforms, giving fans an earlier look at the (still camouflaged) plug-in hybrid roadster, which will join the hardtop version and the i3 in the BMW i range.

Likely to be revealed at Frankfurt later this year with a market launch (including in South Africa) in 2018, BMW promises that the production version of the i8 Spyder concept will “unlock the door to a whole new dimension in pioneering open-top driving pleasure – virtually silent and with zero local emissions”.

It should share its plug-in hybrid powertrain with the standard i8, although with the latter soon due a mid-cycle update, an updated battery pack and possibly a smidgen more oomph from the 1,5-litre turbo-triple could be on the cards.

The video also confirms that the new i8 Roadster will employ a small, fabric roof in the targa-top style.

BMW i8 long-term test review: would you take one over a Porsche Panamera?

Pondering its merits against the competition from Porsche

It’s been a Porsche Panamera-intensive month, which may seem like an odd thing to say in a report on a BMW i8, but bear with me.

The one pictured above is the 4S Diesel, and with 4.0 litres of twin-turbo V8 power at its disposal, it gives a similar level of performance to that offered by the BMW’s 1.5 litres of three-pot single-turbo hybridised petrol power. How? Because once you’ve offset the Porsche’s extra power and torque against its half tonne of additional weight, they actually stack up pretty closely.

I’m a huge fan of both powertrains. Truth is, I’ve never driven a V8 diesel I didn’t like, and the Panamera’s velvet wallop is something to behold. But the i8 counters with a deliciously snarling soundtrack, despite some sneering at its synthesised nature.

What I like best about these cars are their iconoclastic natures. I’d rather drive the i8 on an open road and sit in traffic in the Porsche, but the important point is that both demonstrate that there remain different ways of getting the job done, and you don’t have to subscribe to the jelly-mould norm prevalent in other areas of the market.

The more relevant Panamera, of course, is the E-Hybrid. Apologies for not having a picture of it next to the i8, but I was on another continent when I drove it. It uses a 3.0-litre turbo V6 petrol engine boosted by electricity and offers a 30-mile electric range. It’s a lot more affordable than the BMW, Porsche having slashed its price so, curiously, it’s now almost £10k cheaper than the less powerful, non-hybrid petrol 4S using the same engine. But even though it costs half as much again, the i8’s pint-sized powertrain is in a different league to the Porsche motor.

Porsche says it’s a car bought more by head than heart, and for a certain kind of user the running costs are compelling. But the i8 has both bases covered (albeit for a different customer) and, hypercars aside, it remains the only hybrid so to do.

PREVIOUS REPORTS

Why it can beat a Porsche 911

Recently, I met a man who actually owned a BMW i8.

Spent his own money on it – or at least his company’s. Broke a Porsche 911 habit measurable in decades to do it. Did he buy it for its looks, its CO2 emissions, or its carbonfibre construction? Did he hell. He bought it because, as a taxable company benefit, he said it saved him thousands relative to his last car, a 911 Turbo. Did he not miss the extra punch of the Turbo? Not in the least. What about that flat six howl? No, again. But surely he missed its grip, agility and the intimacy of the Porsche driving experience? Thrice nope.

Truth is, he bought the car because, over the three years he will have it, its total costs made it a damned sight cheaper for him than anything else that kind of money might buy. But that’s not why he loves it. He loves it because he feels good about driving it.

No, that’s not what you’d call a deep-dive assessment based on forensic analysis of the facts, but that doesn’t make the judgement any less valid. You don’t need to be a grizzled road tester to appreciate a car’s look or get pleasure from that little bit of theatre every time a door flips open and you settle down into those superb seats with that perfect driving position. Its ability to make every journey an occasion distinguishes the i8 from the others, even cars I’d rather drive fast, such as the 911.

In fact, I love driving the i8 slowly, taking the kids to school, knowing I’ll get there and back while using no fuel at all. Saddo that I am, I’ve taken to photographing the trip computer, just because so many of the numbers displayed are at such apparent odds with a high-performance coupé.

So I asked the bloke the acid question. In three years, will he trade in the i8 for another? “There’ll be a new 911 by then, so I’ll wait to see what that’s like. But if I had to decide now, I’d do it in an instant.”

What a road: BMW’s ‘final test’ for new i8 Roadster…

BMW has released a new teaser video showing the i8 Roadster in final testing.

Back in July, BMW released a short teaser video giving us our first official glimpse of the new i8 Roadster. And now the Munich-based brand has released another clip, this time showing what will be the third member of the BMW i family undergoing “final testing”.

The 26-second video shows the latest interpretation of the plug-in hybrid sportscar crossing the Alps in southern France via some absolutely stunning roads, which BMW describes as the “perfect route for the final test drive” of the roadster.

Due to arrive in 2018, BMW says the i8 Roadster will “unlock the door to a whole new dimension in pioneering open-top driving pleasure – virtually silent and with zero local emissions”.

Rumours suggest the i8 Roadster will be based on the upcoming facelift set to be handed to the i8 coupé, which should include not only a little extra oomph from its combination of three-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor, but also possibly some added electric-only range.

Watch the latest teaser clip below…

can remember the passats in puke green color back then...

 <- when do we get this smiley, eh? :p

The colours are quite nice in person. This car has the unfortunate characteristic of being almost impossible to photograph in a flattering manner.

BMW i8 Roadster Shown in Final Testing [with Video]

BMW has again teased its forthcoming BMW i8 Roadster, but this time in yet another short video clip showing the plug-in hybrid in its final testing phase somewhere in the Alps. Check it out!

The BMW i8 Roadster will be the third official vehicle in the i-lineup and this topless version forms part of a facelifted i8 range due for market launch in 2018. Some of the changes include redesigned LED headlights, along with new bumpers front and rear and a refreshed range of alloy wheel designs. The roof is predicted to be a manually removable soft top, but the striking butterfly doors will be retained as they're integrated with the A-pillars.

According to BMW, "The i8 Roadster will unlock the door to a whole new dimension in pioneering open-top driving pleasure – virtually silent and with zero local emissions."

Under the skin, we're likely to see a slightly revised version of the i8's plug-in hybrid setup, which comprises a turbocharged 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine combined with an electric motor mounted on the front axle. The vehicle will also gain the latest BMW infotainment and technology systems.

BMW says that the i8 Roadster is in its final stage of testing and although an official reveal has not been confirmed, there is a chance that we will see the facelifted i8 and new i8 Roadster at the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show in September 2017, with sales commencing in 2018. We will keep you in the loop as more details emerge, so stay tuned!
