1st official pics are out of Hyundai's radical looking crossover. It's not destined for SA; intially at least.

Hyundai Motor has unveiled the latest vehicle in its expanding line-up of stylish SUVs, the Hyundai Kona compact SUV. With a strong, impactful design and uncompromised individuality, the Kona is designed to appeal to modern customers with active lifestyles.

The Kona joins Tucson, Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport in a growing line-up of Hyundai Motor SUVs, as the company continues to widen customer choice in the segment. At the world premiere of its new B-segment SUV, Hyundai Motor reaffirmed its promise to deliver SUVs that feature progressive design with high interior refinement and spaciousness.

The Hyundai Kona will go on sale in Korea in June 2017, followed by North America and Europe.

"With the Kona, we have created a stylish and highly functional compact SUV, perfectly suited to the needs of customers who pursue challenging, action-filled lifestyles," said Euisun Chung, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Company. "We aim to set new standards for the compact SUV segment, with appealing design, cutting-edge connectivity and class leading safety features."

Uncompromised individuality and purposeful character

The Hyundai Kona is a brand-new challenger in the B-SUV segment, with uncompromised individuality and innovative features. The Kona's bold, daring image hints at the future design direction of Hyundai Motor's next generation of SUV models and creates a unique proposition in the compact SUV segment.

Hyundai Kona stands out from the crowd with high contrast design elements and striking style. Its masculine protective, 'armor', combines powerfully with the futuristic LED lighting to create a high-tech look. Despite its unique appearance, the Kona doesn't sacrifice sophistication and is highly capable - a combination designed to appeal to the Millennial demographic.

Unique and stylish exterior design

The Kona's stand-out design is reinforced by the car's voluminous, aggressive body styling, that emphasizes the car's well-proportioned, dynamic silhouette. Its low and wide stance complements the car's stylish profile, with the long wheel base and short overhangs ensuring sporty, nimble handling, in addition to delivering superior driving stability at high speed.

'Composite lamps' enhance the Kona's high-tech and mechanical appearance. The slim daytime running lights (DRL) incorporate turn signals and are positioned in a 'stack', separate to the LED headlights.

The Hyundai Kona's front is powerful, as its 'armor' shows its readiness for extreme activities. The compact SUV also adopts Hyundai Motor's new family identity, the Cascading Grille, featuring a sporty mesh pattern, flanked by exceptional wing-type fenders that dominate the front design.

The visual relationship between the composite lamps, Hyundai's signature Cascading Grille and the unique armor design results in a totally distinct character, which is important in the increasingly competitive B-SUV segment.

Further stand-out design elements at the side reinforce the car's tough and functional qualities. Most notably the contrasting black 'armor' that provides a protective skin and visually connects the front to the rear.

As with the front LED arrangement, the rear light configuration also creates a truly unique signature appearance. The slim brake lights, turn indicators and reverse lamp are placed in a separate configuration, surrounded by protective skin that begins at the C-pillar garnish.

In addition to the instantly recognizable shape, a number of playful color variations allow buyers to customize their Kona. The roof is finished with a two-tone color scheme, providing high contrast between the body and wheels - satisfying customers with a desire to express their individuality.

New Nissan Juke-rivalling Hyundai Kona launched

Korean firm’s small SUV features a fresh design direction and new tech; expected to cost from £15,000

This is the new Hyundai Kona, the Korean firm's first entry into the small-SUV segment. The global launch was held in Seoul today.

Intended to take on the likes of the Nissan Juke, the Kona features a fresh design for the brand and a range of new-to-Hyundai technology, including a head-up display and revamped infotainment system.

The Kona sits below the Santa Fe and Tucson in Hyundai’s SUV line-up, and the firm hopes that it will help expand its customer base – particularly in Europe.

A European-model launch will be held this evening - check back here later for more details.

Hyundai plans two new SUVs, electric Kona

“The all-new Kona is not just another car among Hyundai Motor’s established SUV range – it is an important milestone on our journey to become Asian automotive brand number one in Europe by 2021,” said Thomas Schmid, Hyundai Europe’s chief operating officer.

“With its true SUV genes, a progressive design and premium features, Kona reflects the lifestyle of modern customers, enhancing the brand’s appeal and attracting new customers.”

The Kona, which shares a platform with sister firm Kia’s forthcoming Stonic, will go on sale in Korea next month, followed by North America and Europe; it is expected to be available to buy in the UK in November. In the UK, there will initially be a choice of two turbocharged petrol engines, with a 1.6-litre diesel likely to follow in mid-2018. It will be available with front- and all-wheel-drive.

The Kona is named after a coastal region on Hawaii. It continues Hyundai's trend of naming crossover and SUV models after travel destinations, established by the Tucson and Santa Fe.

Hyundai Kona: engine and powertrain options

The two petrol engines available at launch will be a 1.0L T-GDI with a six-speed manual transmission and a 1.6L T-GDI with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission and all-wheel drive.

The 1.0L unit will produce 118bhpm, with a 0-62mph time of 12.0sec and a top speed of 112mph. It produces 127lb ft of torque at 1500-4000rpm

The more powerful 1.6-litre petrol unit has 174bhp with 195lb ft of torque at 1500-4000rpm. It can achieve 0-63mph in 7.9sec, with a top speed of 127mph.

The 1.6-litre diesel is due to arrive in the European market at some point in 2018, although it's not yet confirmed. It will be available in two-wheel drive with 113bhp and a six-speed manual. It produces 134bhp in seven-speed DCT and all-wheel-drive guise.

When fitted with the seven-speed box, both petrol and diesel models will feature two driver modes: Normal and Sport, the latter of which holds onto gears for longer between shifts.

Some markets will also be offered the Kona with a 2.0-litre MPI Atkinson engine, although this won't be coming to Europe.

Fresh design: Hyundai’s new exterior styling, rugged looks

The Kona features a fresh design for Hyundai, with the adoption of the marque’s new ‘Cascading Grille’ front. Hyundai says it is designed to merge high-tech looks with sophistication, to appeal to millennial buyers.

Sangyup Lee, Hyundai's head of styling, said: “We wanted to create a character that was strong. As a design, creating an icon is a tough challenge. The overall first impression is about dynamic character.”

There are slim daytime LED running lights positioned above the main headlights – a design similar to that of the Juke. The rear of the Kona features wraparound cladding that houses the indicator and reversing lights, slim LED rear lights and a spoiler with an integrated LED brake light.

There are large plastic areas - which Hyundai says are styled on 'protective armour' - that extend over the wheel arches to hint at the Kona’s off-roading capabilities; 16in wheels are standard, with 17in and 18in alloys available as options. Roof racks are also available as an exterior option.

There will be 10 colour options, with a two-tone roof adding more customisation.

Dimensions: sizing up the Hyundai Kona

The Kona is 4165mm long and 1800mm wide, with a height 1550mm. That makes it slightly shorter and lower than the Juke, but 35mm wider. The Kona’s 2600mm wheelbase is 70mm longer than the Juke's.

The Kona has a ground clearance of 170mm to offer ‘a true SUV experience’. It features an all-steel body.

The Kona has McPherson struts at the front. The 2WD model comes with a couple torsion beam, with a multi-link system on the AWD model. That all-wheel-drive car also comes with traction control.

Inside the Hyundai Kona: clutter-free cabin, fresh infotainment and safety tech

Hyundai’s designers have tried to give the Kona’s interior a premium feel with a clutter-free cabin.

There is 1005mm of headroom in the front, with 961mm in the rear. The Kona has a 361-litre boot, compared to the 354-litre boot in the Juke. The Kona’s maximum capacity is 1143 litres, 46 fewer than Nissan’s small SUV.

The Kona comes a 5.0-inch TFT screen as standard, with an optional 8.0-inch colour touchscreen available. In a first for Hyundai, the Kona is available with a Display Audio system that features connected services, including smartphone syncing using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. A wireless smartphone charging pad is available as an option.

In another Hyundai first, the Kona is available with a head-up display, which the firm says has class-leading luminance.

An eight-speaker sound system by American audio firm Krell is also available as an option.

As well as the head-up display, the Kona is available with a number of active driver assistance systems. These include autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping assist, rear-cross traffic alert and blind spot detection.

Hyundai Kona pricing: expected to cost from £15,000

Hyundau is aiming for Kona to go on sale in Europe, although it is understood it will be slightly later to arrive in the UK. Pricing and trim levels will be confirmed closer to the launch date, but early estimates suggest it will start from around £15,000. That would slot it directly between the Juke and Ford Ecosport.

Hyundai to expand SUV range with Kona EV, two new models

Electric Kona to launch by mid-2018, small 'A-SUV' model to follow by 2020

Hyundai will further expand its SUV line-up with two new models and an electric version of the newly launched Kona.

Speaking at the launch of the new Nissan Juke-rivalling Kona compact SUV in Seoul, Korea today, Hyundai’s vice-chairman Euison Chung said the firm would launch a new 'A-SUV' car, smaller than the Kona, by 2020. A large SUV that sits above the Tucson will follow to complete the marque's five-model SUV range.

“We have analysed the needs of our customers, and the SUV segment is reaching saturation,” said Chung. “We believe there’s greater room for potential growth in the B-SUV segment [compact crossovers such as the Kona and Juke]. Young drivers are looking for small but solid and powerful cars.

“Our plan is to develop an A-segment SUV that is smaller than the Kona by 2020 so we can embrace the SUV from A to E segment, so we will also roll out an E segment SUV that is bigger than Santa Fe. We want a full SUV line-up to respond to our customers needs.”

Chung said the planned Kona EV was part of the company’s focus on alternate-fuelled vehicles. That includes the Ioniq, which is available with three different powertrains.

“We will launch electric vehicle Kona EV model by next year," said Chung. "We will focus more on eco-friendly cars such as EV and hydrogen-electric cars.”

Hyundai officials said they were aiming for the EV Kona to have a driving range of around 240 miles.

Chung did not confirm if the new SUV models or the EV Kona would be launched in the European market.

Interesting, looking at the pricing of the crappy looking Creta and the Tucson, it would be very interesting to know how this would be priced.

Hyundai Kona Revealed

Korean carmaker Hyundai has unveiled its new SUV. It's called the Kona and sits in the compact SUV family, underneath the Tucson. It'll go on sale in Korea in June 2017, with introduction shortly thereafter in North America and Europe.

Hyundai's SUV family grows by one with the introduction of the new Kona. Sitting under the Tucson, the Kona carries on the Hyundai tradition of naming its SUVs after American destinations. "With the Kona, we have created a stylish and highly functional compact SUV, perfectly suited to the needs of customers who pursue challenging, action-filled lifestyles," said Euisun Chung, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Company. "We aim to set new standards for the compact SUV segment, with appealing design, cutting-edge connectivity and class-leading safety features."

The Hyundai Kona enters the competitive B-segment of SUVs and brings with it some modern styling and innovative features. The lighting, for example, is futuristic and uses LEDs to make it look more premium. Despite its high-tech good looks, Hyundai promises that the new Kona is very capable and admitted that they're targeting the Millenial demographic.

Kona looks to be a stylish yet practical B-segment SUV. Petrol and diesel engines are available.

This segment of the market prides itself on customisation and the Hyundai Kona offers a number of colour variations and combinations. The two-tone roof is a nice touch. There were no interior shots to accompany this article, but Hyundai claims the Kona has best-in-class interior space, which if true, will give it a competitive edge.

Powertrain

The Hyundai Kona is assembled on an all-new compact platform which is designed to give owners a proper SUV experience, which means an elevated driving position and substantial ground clearance. Kona will be offered with a choice of either petrol or diesel engines, and four-wheel drive is available, but not standard across the range. Some of the engines include:

2.0-liter petrol engine produces 110 kW and 179 Nm. 0-100kph in 10 seconds and a top speed of 194kph. It comes with a six-speed automatic transmission.

1.6T-GDI engine boasts 130kW and 265 Nm and it's possible to do a 0-100kph in 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 210kph. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT) is standard.

1.0 T-GDI turbocharged three-cylinder engine with six-speed manual transmission and has 88 kW and 172 Nm.

A 1.6 diesel engine for select markets, including Europe. No details as yet, but we suspect it'll be the 94 kW and 260 Nm unit found in the Creta.

Technology

It's not confirmed for SA as yet, but we'd be surprised if it didn't come to our market.

The Hyundai Kona features a premium infotainment system which offers various advanced connectivity features, including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It can be specified with a 5-, 7- or 8-inch display (offered as standard or option dependent on market). Further options include DAB digital radio (Europe), HD Radio (North America), rear view camera display, and 4G telematics (North America) for connectivity. A head-up display and a wireless charging pad are also fitted.

Hyundai Kona in South Africa?

Given how well the Creta and Tucson have been received, we'd be surprised if this stylish SUV offering doesn't make landfall in South Africa. We'll keep you posted as things progress.

Kona is Hyundai's funky new compact SUV

After a prolonged teaser campaign, Hyundai has finally pulled the covers off its new Kona compact SUV.

Whereas the Creta is aimed at select emerging markets such as India, Hyundai’s Kona is the brand’s first ‘global’ B-segment SUV and it’s designed to take on the likes of Mazda’s CX-3 and Nissan’s Juke.

But is it coming to SA then? We’re still awaiting word from Hyundai SA, but our guess is that it would depend on whether they could position it without clashing with the Creta.

And what’s with that name? Hyundai said it named its new baby SUV after the coastal region of Hawaii’s Big Island. Naming SUVs after places in the US is a thing for Hyundai – think Tucson and Santa Fe.

We dare say there’s also more than just a hint of Jeep Cherokee in its two-tier headlight design, which flanks a large ‘cascading’ grille, Hyundai’s new corporate face. In fact, the Kona is set to influence the look of other future Hyundai SUVs.

The Kona will be offered with a plenty of “playful” colour variations, complete with contrasting roof colours.

Depending on the market in question, buyers will have a wide choice of engines, including the 88kW/172Nm 1-litre and 130kW 1.6-litre T-GDI turbopetrol engines, a 110kW/179Nm normally aspirated Atkinson cycle petrol variant and a 1.6-litre turbodiesel.

Buyers will have a choice between front-wheel-drive, in which case the Kona has a simple torsion beam rear suspension, and an all-wheel-drive system, which is bundled with a more sophisticated dual-arm multi-link rear axle.

The interior has a simpler design than the exterior, with the centre piece being a monitor (available in 12.7 to 20.3cm sizes) that appears to “float” above the dashboard. The company also promises class-leading interior space.

The infotainment system is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and buyers can opt for a Head-Up Display system among a glut of driver assistance gadgets that includes Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, High Beam Assist, Driver Attention Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning.

Interesting, looking at the pricing of the crappy looking Creta and the Tucson, it would be very interesting to know how this would be priced.

Sure this will slot in just above the Creta in price, so as overpriced as a C-HR...

The verdict is that this new Sunday is not confirmed for SA yet as that the Creta caters for developing markets like ours; India; Brazil etc

No doubt the sophistication on this new Kona will wipe the floor relative to the Creta.
