SEAT's first model in the compact crossover segment. Goes up against tons of stiff opposition.

The New SEAT Arona is the Spanish brand's third new release in 2017, after the upgraded Leon and the New Ibiza. This is yet another addition to the SEAT range in its biggest product offensive ever, which also includes the Ateca and the upcoming large size SUV that will be released in 2018. The New SEAT Arona sits neatly within the SUV range as the younger brother in the family, in an outstanding and bright way, that combines the advantages of its compact dimensions in the city with its crossover attributes to get out of the city and go even further. It's also the fact that the SEAT Arona is so elegant, spacious, practical and comfortable both in the normal Monday to Friday working week and adventurous, robust, sporty and efficient at the weekend. All of this combined with applied safety and connectivity technology that is only seen in higher segments of the market, plus SEAT's undoubtable attractive and distinct design without failing to mention a huge amount of personalisation options as well as the sports DNA dynamism and finesse of the Spanish brand. The Arona, manufactured exclusively in Martorell - the plant with the largest production volume in Spain - will play a key role for SEAT, strengthening the brand and increasing sales.

"We at SEAT are very persistent. With our biggest product offensive, by the time the Large SUV reaches the market, SEAT will have launched, in average, a new vehicle every six months in two and a half years. SEAT has allocated a total of 900 million euros in investments and R&D expenditure to the Ibiza and Arona. These investments are a part of the total investment of 3.3 billion euros for the 2015-2019 period", says Luca de Meo, President of SEAT. "The commercial launch of the New Ibiza is taking place this very month, and Arona will be premiered at the Frankfurt Motorshow".

The New SEAT Arona is the SEAT's first model in the A0 compact crossover segment, which has increased four-fold since 2015.

Far from confining itself to a specific category, the Arona is a lesson in versatility. Thanks to its compact size and the sensations of safety and control offered by its high driving position and modern design, it is perfect for everyday city driving, but it's not afraid to show its fun and adventurous side either. With the added bonus of its bold crossover look, the Arona is not just any car; it goes much further.

The New SEAT Arona is designed for drivers looking for a sense of excitement, distinction and functionality. People who know that age is just a number, not an outlook on life. This is a car that fits their lifestyle, that works in both the city and the countryside, that is loaded with technology and that is comfortable, spacious, safe, dynamic, customisable, and all-purpose. It is a car that's easy to get in and out of, and if that weren't enough, a car in which your luggage can fit easily with no hassle whatsoever.

New Seat Arona revealed as Nissan Juke rival

New Seat Arona will wade in against the Nissan Juke this autumn, priced from about £14k

Seat will launch the Arona this September as the second car in its range of SUVs. The new crossover will receive its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show.

The Arona will be Seat’s third new car this year and it slots into a segment in which global demand has quadrupled since 2015. It rivals big-selling models such as the Vauxhall Mokka X and Nissan Juke.

The Arona sits beneath the Ateca in Seat’s SUV range and is built on a compact version of that car’s Volkswagen Group MQB underpinnings, called MQB A0. The same platform is also used by the newly launched Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo superminis.

Speaking at the launch of the Arona, Seat boss Luca de Meo said the firm was planning to launch six new models by 2020. He added: "We are in good shape. 2016 was the best year in our history, and we're 13.9% up again to the end of May this year. We're the fastest growing brand in the VW Group."

The Arona’s design draws on features from the smaller Ibiza as well as the larger Ateca, adopting the latter’s underbody protection and rugged wheel-arch surrounds.

Technically, the Arona is more closely aligned with the Ibiza, although it’s 79mm longer and 99mm taller, with raised ground clearance and improved head room. Seat has also given the Arona higher seats — they’re 62mm higher than the Ibiza’s — and thicker cushions, along with a more upright windscreen, to make the cabin feel more airy and commanding place to sit.

There’s more storage space, too, with a 400-litre boot capacity that trumps the Ibiza’s by 108 litres and ranks the Arona ahead of its main rival, the Juke, by 46 litres.

Up front, the car gets a familiar dashboard layout that houses an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system, slim air vents that have been stretched to accentuate the cabin’s width and sporty dials.

Power will come from a choice of five turbocharged engines — three petrols and two diesels. All drive the front wheels through a five-speed or six-speed manual, or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The petrols comprise a 94bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder that is mated to the five-speed gearbox, a 113bhp 1.0-litre triple that gets the six-speeder or automatic, and a 148bhp 1.5-litre four-cylinder, which has fuel economy-boosting cylinder deactivation technology and comes equipped with the six-speed gearbox. A hot Cupra version with the 197bhp 2.0-litre TSI engine also used in the VW Polo GTI could also follow.

The sporty FR trim gets Seat’s four-mode drive programmes — Normal, Sport, Eco and Individual — for a wider range of drivetrain and chassis characteristics.

The diesels are based on a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and offer 94bhp and 113bhp. The lower-powered version has a five-speed or automatic gearbox and the 113bhp diesel has a six-speed transmission.

The Arona is offered with a wide range of trims and finishes, including 68 possible colour combinations for the body and roof.

Technical features include driver assist programmes such as adaptive cruise control and auto lights and wipers, as well as a rear-view camera. There’s also a tiredness detection system and park assist.

Following its launch in Frankfurt this September, the Arona is predicted to go on sale priced from about £14,000, which would slightly undercut the Juke and be about £4000 cheaper than the Ateca.

Seat is expecting such heavy demand for the Arona that it’s preparing its Martorell plant in Spain, which also handles production of the Ibiza, Leon and Audi A1, to ramp annual output up to 500,000 units.

The Spanish manufacturer plans to continue its aggressive range expansion into next year, when it will introduce a third crossover. This larger model, based on the underpinnings of the Skoda Kodiaq, will sit above the Ateca in the range.

Seat Arona: orders now being taken for £16,555 (~ R300 000) Nissan Juke rival

Seat's new SUV will enter one of the most fiercely contested classes when it arrives in showrooms this November

The all-new Seat Arona, a rival to the Nissan Juke, can be ordered now with prices starting at £16,555.

The Arona, due in UK showrooms from November, comes in SE or SE Technology forms at the entry level, with more aggressive-looking FR and FR Sport models next in the range. Top-spec Xcellence and Xcellence Lux trims will be the most luxurious models on sale, with prices starting from £20,825.

To mark the car's launch, SE First Edition and Xcellence First Edition models are offered for a limited time, bringing more kit and bespoke design features to signal their place as at the start of the car's production run.

Arona is Seat’s second SUV and third new car this year, slotting into a segment in which global demand has quadrupled since 2015. Its rivals will include other big-selling models such as the Vauxhall Mokka X.

The Arona sits beneath the Ateca in Seat’s SUV range and is built on a compact version of that car’s Volkswagen Group MQB underpinnings, called MQB A0. The same platform is also used by the newly launched Ibiza and Volkswagen Polo superminis.

Seat boss Luca de Meo said the firm is planning to launch six new models by 2020. He added: "We are in good shape. 2016 was the best year in our history, and we're 13.9% up again to the end of May this year. We're the fastest growing brand in the VW Group."

Seat Arona 1.0 TSI 2017 review

Should I buy one?

If you’re dead set on a small crossover then you might well. The Arona is a bit pricier than its direct rivals, but there’s a good reason for that: it’s a better car. And it does come well equipped, even in the entry trim levels.

Not fussed about such things as a raised ride height and a contrasting roof? As is often the case, you’ll find better value, better refined dynamics and almost as much space in a regular supermini. But then Seat has that base covered, too, with the talented new Ibiza.

2022 Seat Arona spied testing for the first time

Facelifted junior SUV expected to follow design trends established by recently updated Ateca

An updated version of the Seat Arona has been spotted on public roads for the first time.

Seat's junior SUV isn't expected to go on sale until the end of next year, but early prototypes have now been seen in the French Alps undergoing dynamic testing.

While the test mules are disguised, the camouflage hints that this will be fairly minor facelift, concentrating on the front and rear ends of the car. It appears to be sporting headlights similar to the ones seen in the current Arona, though this may change before the production model is signed off.

A new mesh design can be seen on the front grille, the lower part of which appears to be smaller than the existing car's. The rear end appears largely the same as before, with visible exhaust tips suggesting it is the sportier FR model being tested.

Seat Arona

The new SEAT Arona is ready to continue its success story for the brand, three years after its introduction in 2017.

Since then, the urban SUV has sold more than 350,000 vehicles globally and established itself as a key pillar of the brand's range. With a revamped, rugged visual and a digital transformation within the cabin, the new Arona is set to remain a staple in the segment.

"The urban SUV market has grown significantly and the SEAT Arona's adaptability makes it an enormously important model for the company," said Wayne Griffiths, President of SEAT and CUPRA. "The updated Arona adds even more functionality, both digital and safety-focused, in a revised form inside and out."

In an increasingly digitised world, the SEAT Arona is ready to bring customers' connected lives into the cabin. The addition of a huge range of intuitive functionality, combined with a revamped design that includes ambient lighting (FR and Xperience trims only) and a larger floating-screen infotainment system, brings a heightened sense of modernity and quality to the interior and a bold new personality.

2021 Seat Arona gets interior overhaul and new look

Urban-focused SUV is brought into line with newer Seat models, featuring enhanced tech

The Seat Arona has been updated after four years on sale with a new suite of connectivity features, revamped styling and an overhauled interior.

Revealed alongside its similarly updated and closely related Ibiza supermini sibling, the refreshed Arona is aimed at boosting safety and usability, while maintaining the model's popularity – since it launched, Seat has sold more than 350,000 units globally.

The headline change for 2021 is a new cabin design that brings the urban-focused compact SUV more closely into line with the new Leon hatchback.

Most obviously, the integrated touchscreen has been swapped for a free-standing item ranging from 8.25in to 9.2in wide. It gives access to a full suite of connectivity services including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eCall emergency response and real-time traffic information.

Seat Arona 1.0 TSI FR 2021 UK review

Should I buy one?

Seat reckons SE Technology trim will be the most popular, and that makes sense, because at £20,510 that’s where the Arona represents the best value. SE Technology gets you the bigger screen and parking sensors, but FR and Xperience are quite a big step up in price, and at that point, some rivals offer even more equipment for the money.

Don’t get carried away with the spec, and the Arona is still a deceptively spacious small SUV that’s economical and reasonably good to drive. It no longer feels as cheap as it used to and offers as much or as little tech as you want for the segment.
