As the title asks is there anyone using an Asus DSL ac68u modem/router with their fibre connection. Is there any special setup required ... Any tips or guides are welcome

This is specifically for metro fibre internet 25/25mbps

As far as I know you can’t use a DSL modem/router with Fibre. You can only use a broadband router with a WAN port.

It does have a wan port ... And it is noted as being Adsl VDSL and fibre comapitble. Just wondering if anyone has oexperinece using this modem router and of it is just an easy plug and play ...

Also it's an expensive modem ... Hate to get rid of it

Oh ok, then I think that should be fine.

I picked up an Asus DSL-AC68U a few months before Vumatel came knocking.

All I can recall doing was designating one of the LAN ports as a WAN port, then it was just a matter of configuring the WAN. With Vumatel I just had to tell the router to use DHCP to obtain an IP for itself. It may work differently with other fibre providers where you need to provide login info.

If I recall, the DSL-AC68U has a config wizard that might be able to step you through setting up for fibre.

Ah this is what I wanted to see. Thanks for this. The dsl ac68u is a pretty nifty networking gadget and will be happy that I can keep it for the fibre

I'm been using one with Vumatel fibre for a year now. It works fine, and no special setup is required. Just cable from the CPE to the WAN port.

am I missing something or just looking at wrong product? this one doesn't have a WAN port

(no dedicated... looks like LAN ports work as WAN as well?)

the RT-AC68U on the other hand has WAN, but no modem

In addition to DD-WRT, check out Merlin's firmware, which is what I've been running on a few consecutive Asus routers. With that, you can run an ad-blocking script on the router, have 4 VPN clients instead of 1, and more. These forums have a wealth of tips & guides for various scripts.

I like the ad blocking script idea. I'll look into that. The only issue for me is what about the sites that break with the ad blocker - how easy is it to temporarily disable it...

What I really really want in a router is the ability to see bandwidth usage per connected station - both the 'right now' Mbps numbers and the 'over time' GB numbers.

Can Merlin do that? Tomato comes close.

Yeah, mostly that's not an issue for the fibre connection if I understand it correctly. I find that's my go-to question these days with consumer level hardware other than Mikrotik or Ubiquiti.

No issue with the ethernet wan port, it's just the dsl support that falls away which you don't need anyway as mentioned in that merlin thread.

Yes, there's full traffic monitoring, by both client as well as which programs on those clients are using the data. As for the ads, you can load the ad blocker client gui in a terminal window and disable it temporarily, yes, but you usually don't need to - it supports a whitelist and a blacklist, so you can usually get by just whitelisting sites like that. "Wired" is the only website I visit that requires me to disable blocking completely.

Need help ... Wan port configured but no idea what to do from here ... Can someone post screenshots of their settings on this router
