I must be the only one trying to set up a @telkomsa.net account on Outlook - from my trials so far it has been borderline impossible.

It's got something to do with the SMTP authentication but for the life of me I can't remember how to fix it. Anyone have any thoughts?

I know dsl is not in the image below - it produces the same error when corrected to smtp.dsl.telkomsa.net

In the old days, there was an "advanced" button that you clicked and it opened another form. In there you must spesify that the connection to the SMTP server must use the same credentials as for the POP3 server. This used to work most of the time IIRC.
Nowadays, desktop support sort out these things

Are you using Telkom as the ISP. Wont work if your ISP is on Internet Solutions I think.

Which isp are you using, from what I remember there are different smtp servers for telkom isp and non-telkom isps.

Have you tried smtp.saix.net or mail.saix.net?

Correct - same issue occurs.

I suspect that it has something to do with this but this new Outlook won't let me change anything other than those settings above.

Yeah, I am using Telkom Internet as my ISP.

you left out the "l"
smtp.dsl.

Even with the fixed (as I was aware of ;) ) I still get the error.

Try,
smtp.telkomsa.net

Port 25 (no SSL and no Authentication)

Same issue.

Needless to say the telkom online chat support can't comprehend the issue and are unable to help - the last one just disconnected me...

Edit: In a stroke of sheer genius - if you go to user accounts in the control panel and the mail option it allows you to use the legacy screen.

So it must be a MS Outlook issue then.

It's borderline impossible to get Telkom's mail to come through the Windows 10 Mail app, in my experience. I only use the web portal now because it's less hassle.

Found same problem. Only way around it, is to go to the 'Mail' Control panel applet. Go to the Classic Control panel, do a search for Mail. You will get Mail (Microsoft Office 2016) (32-bit). Email Accounts, and you can manually enter all information in the old way - ports, authentication, etc for the Telkom email account

Thanks leniyl, this saved me so much hassle, after been 30 minutes on the phone with telkom to be told no our telkom smtp does not work with outlook 2016. this was a blessing to find. cheers

I had similar issue with a client's Outlook setup.
You have to disable Simplified Account Creation in Outlook 2016
To disable the Simplified Account Creation dialog box in Outlook 2016 and use the traditional account dialog box instead, follow these steps:
Important

Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

  1. Exit Outlook.
  2. Start Registry Editor. To do this, use one of the following procedures, as appropriate for your version of Windows.
  3. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the user settings subkey in the registry:
  4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\setup
  5. or the group policy subkey in the registry:
  6. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\setup
  7. Point to New on the Edit menu and then DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  8. Type DisableOffice365SimplifiedAccountCreation, and then press Enter.
  9. Right-click DisableOffice365SimplifiedAccountCreation, and then select Modify.
  10. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  11. On the File menu, select Exit to exit Registry Editor.

Now you can setup the telkom email account on Outlook 365 like old days..

Soooo much easier starting control panel, go to mail and create the account..

That way persons who are unfamiliar with the registery do not mess around in a volatile area of a pc
