Today HMD officially took the wraps off its second generation Nokia 6 smartphone. It comes with a more capable chipset and a reduced footprint, but otherwise shares most of its hardware with the original Nokia 6.

The second gen Nokia 6 or Nokia 6 (2018), if you will, is built around a 5.5” IPS LCD of 16:9 aspect and FullHD resolution and sport a Snapdragon 630 with 2.2GHz octa-core CPU and 4GB of RAM. The screen is protected by a sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The operating system version is still Android 7.1 Nougat, but a quick update to 8.0 Oreo is promised to bring the new Nokia 6 up to speed.

The phone switches to the newer USB-C standard for data connection and charging of its 3,000 mAh battery. but has the same camera pair as its predecessor. This means the Second gen Nokia 6 has a single 16MP camera with 1.0um pixels and F/2.0 lens at the back and an 8MP shooter with 1.12um pixels and F/2.2 aperture at the front.

A microSD card slot lets you extend the available storage, which is 32GB or 64GB depending on the version you purchase. There’s a single speaker on board, but the 3.5mm audio is also here to stay.

The final major change the Nokia 6 (2018) brings is the fingerprint sensor, which has moved to the back to help reduce the footprint of the phone. As a result the second gen Nokia 6 measures 148.8 x 75.8 x 8.15mm (8.6mm thick at the camera), which more is than 5mm shorter than the original one.

The second-gen Nokia 6 is available for pre-order in Black and Silver color options for CNY1,499 (R2856,43(R1,91/yen) for the 32GB version, while the 64GB one costs CNY1,699(R3237,540. Actual sales begin on January 10.

Expect the global edition to be unveiled next month at MWC 2018.

I think this is going to be my next phone.

Last year's Nokia 6 with the Snapdragon 430 was just a bit underpowered for my taste, but this will do nicely. It has everything that I am looking for (including NFC which the Xiaomi A1 doesn't have). Will be great if it can come in at sub-R4k.

and in SA probably R5K & R6K

Nokia made its debut last year with the Nokia 6 and it sure managed to stir some emotions. It first launched as a China-exclusive product, which further made anticipation for it grow globally. Both skeptics and devout Nokia fans were waiting with baited breath — would it be the awesome device Nokia promises it to be, or would it be just another midrange Android flop? Then, the Nokia 6 launched across all markets and was a pretty well received thanks to its mix of design, specs, snappy software, and good pricing.

Well, the Nokia 6 (2018) follows the steps of its predecessor. It has already been launched in China almost 2 months ago and has just been showcased on MWC in Barcelona as well. Let's see how it improves on the already successful formula!

While the old Nokia 6 wasn't at all ugly, its appearance was sort of subdued and understated. It was the cool thing in the background, not a fashion statement. The Nokia 6 (2018) throws this notion out the door — its aluminum body is finished with two-tone anodization to make for some striking accents. It comes in three colors that pop — a black with copper accents, white with pink-ish accents, or blue with gold accents.

The phone is on the upper side of the midrange scale and rocks an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, capable of reaching 2.2 GHz clock speeds. Sold in two variants, it will either come with 32 GB of memory and 3 GB of RAM, or 64 GB of memory and 4 GB of RAM. The display up front has a 5.5-inch diagonal and a standard, 16:9 aspect ratio. A 3,000 mAh battery keeps things running.

On the camera side of things, we have a 16 MP main camera with Zeiss optics. What's important to know here is that — from now on — every Nokia phone with the Zeiss brand on its camera will come with a cool Manual mode in the camera app. It looks very similar to what we've seen on Lumia phones before and gives you full control over focus, white balance, ISO, and shutter speed, with changes being previewable straight in the viewfinder. On the front, we have an 8 MP snapper for your detailed selfie needs.

Another piece of big news here — Nokia is now an Android One partner. The Nokia 6 comes with a “pure” build of Android 8 Oreo and, thanks to the partnership with Google, it will receive security updates and major Android patches as soon as Google pushes them. No more manufacturer slowdowns, at least that's what we were promised.

The Nokia 6 will launch in early April and will cost around $245.

Nokia’s new phones: first impressions

HMD and Nokia have just wrapped up their local launch of Nokia’s new smartphone line-up, and have revealed some fine-looking phones.

They all run Android Oreo, and feature some pretty cool innovations that could potentially tempt South Africans away from their current favourite mobile phone brands. Nokia is launching them into the SA market now, and they will be available through MTN, Vodacom, and Cell C either by the end of the month, or in early May.

New Nokia 6
The next entry is the new Nokia 6, an update to the company’s popular original Nokia 6 that introduces a new construction approach: it’s made from a single piece of machined aluminium, and “one strong twist” of a single screw holds everything securely in place. Inside, it’s been updated to the Snapdragon 630 mobile platform, 3GB/64GB or 4GB/128GB of RAM/storage (there are 2 models to choose from), and a gorgeous 5.5-inch Full HD IPS LCD that’s protected by Gorilla Glass.

The Nokia 6 will retail for R3999, we were told. This is a robust and powerful mid-range phone that’s sure to find an audience among price-sensitive South African smartphone enthusiasts.

BFF
HMD and Car Zeiss have also renewed their partnership – all of Nokia’s new phones but the Nokia 1 feature cameras with Zeiss optics. And since that partnership was behind the excellent photographic capabilities of Nokia’s older Lumia 1520, consumers can expect excellent results from the snappers on these phones. The Sirocco gets the very best Zeiss has to offer – dual rear cameras and a 2x optical zoom lens.

A word on security
One of Android Oreo’s key features is its robust security and its suitability to enterprise use. To that end, Google has rolled out something it calls “Android Enterprise Recommended”, a badge that can be applied to phones that qualify that alert prospective buyers to their suitability to the enterprise environment.

Three of these four new phones are Android Enterprise Recommended, and yes, the one that isn’t is the entry-level Nokia 1.

The badge will make it easy for enterprise IT people to narrow down the list of phones to investigate when looking for new phones for staff, and give them “…consistent deployment, management and user features that make it easier to deploy, scale and support Android”.

Availability
Three of these phones will hit the market in April, so expect to see them on offer from Vodacom, Cell C, and MTN soon (if they aren’t available already). The Nokia 8 Sirocco will go on sale on the 7th of May.

And for those of you interested in Telkom, apparently Nokia/HMD is still talking to Telkom about making the phones available via their outlets.

Nokia 6 (2018) review

The Verdict

The Nokia 6 (2018) is a worthy improvement over its predecessor with a much better chipset and smaller body. Its 5.5" screen turned out great, and so did the performance, while the camera impressed us most of the time with image and video quality. The selfie shooter has autofocus, a rarity these days even within the flagship midst.

Being part of the Android One initiative guarantees a lightweight Android OS, the latest edition at that, with on-time updates for the next 24 months.

Pros

Stylish all metal design

Modern and snappy Snapdragon 630 chipset

Latest Android OS with on-time updates thanks to Android One

Very good 16MP snaps in daylight, impressive 4K videos

The autofocus on the selfie camera is much appreciated

Cons

No waterproofing

No dual-camera on the back

Launch price is not that competitive
So, yes, we liked every part of the new Nokia 6. Except for the price, we guess. Its hard to argue in favor of the Nokia when Xiaomi sells its phones at these bargain prices. But even the competitors from the same bracket as the Nokia 6.1 offer more - increased ingress protection or a dual-camera. Then again, most of those got a price cut since launch, so it's not all that bad.

The Nokia 6 (2018) is a great smartphone for its class, and we are sure the Nokia fans will appreciate it.

My SO got this last week and is happy with the performance and battery life.

it looks like the Nokia 6 is sold out. Checked at least 4 different places all out of stock.

Telkom Deals:

FreeMe 1GB – R269pm (Includes 10GB Telkom Data for 3 months)

FreeMe 2GB – R319pm

FreeMe 5GB – R479pm

FreeMe 10GB – R579pm

FreeMe 20GB – R779pm

FreeMe Unlimited – R1,199pm

I would avoid this phone due to software issues. The mobile data on my SO's phone stopped working after the May security patch.

Looking at the Nokia support forums also shows other owners having similar problems with VoLTE and Wifi.

Here's a damning response from their support rep:
I stated in some other topics already we are actually not Nokia but HMD and we’re a still kind of a start-up. I totally agree and understand expecting patience isn’t always the best solution. Compared to all the big players in the market, we have a small team and processes are not always that smooth. We are learning but in order to learn there have to be mistakes as well. I know this one is a crucial one since a lot of people are affected and it is an important function in the phone. We’re working on it with high-pressure and do our best to offer a solution as soon as possible. I understand this isn’t an easy situation for our customers, so all I can ask for is understanding and a bit of more patience.

Best regards, Laura

I read here and there that all the new nokia's have some form of software problems that you usually only really discover after a few months of use.... like the touchscreen not disabling when you are on a call.... was hoping the 6.1 wasn't like that too
