Hyundai Nexo

Hyundai Motor announced that NEXO will be the name of its all-new, dedicated Fuel Cell EV during a press conference at CES 2018, and disclosed Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that expand its autonomous driving potential. NEXO is the technological flagship of Hyundai's growing eco-vehicle portfolio and marks Hyundai's continued momentum toward having the industry's most diverse CUV powertrain lineup.

The Hyundai NEXO model will spearhead Hyundai Motor's plans to accelerate development of low emission vehicles, in line with Hyundai Motor Group's renewed goal of introducing 18 eco-friendly models to global markets by 2025. This new development roadmap also represents the next step for Hyundai Motor towards realising the ultimate ambition of creating a cleaner environment through eco-friendly vehicles.

Dedicated Architecture

For the first time, Hyundai's fuel cell vehicle is built with a dedicated vehicle architecture. This architecture has many benefits including:

Korean firm unveils ix35 Fuel Cell successor with claimed range of 500 miles

Hyundai has revealed the Nexo – its latest hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) – at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. It has a range of 500 miles and 20% more power than the ix35 Fuel Cell.

The Nexo's range is 135 miles greater than its predecessor's, thanks to a larger battery. The capacity of the fuel cell has shrunk compared with the ix35's, at 95kW to its forebear's 100kW. Power increases from 124kW to 135kW, and the motor's power rises from 132bhp to 159bhp. Torque is also up by around a third, at 291lb ft to the ix35's 221lb ft - speeding up acceleration with the help of the car's lighter weight from 12.5sec to 9.5sec to 60mph.

Rather than being a variant on an existing member of the Hyundai line-up, the Nexo is a model in its own right and built on a dedicated platform. It will serve as the technological flagship of the brand's ever-growing range of electrified cars, with 18 due for launch by 2025.

Hyundai claims that the powertrain is as durable as internal combustion engine-powered cars, and can be refuelled in as little as five minutes, compared with the several hours of the latest electric vehicles on the market. Despite electric motors being remarkably refined, Hyundai claims to have further improved this for the Nexo - all moving parts are under the bonnet. It's grown in almost every dimension compared with the ix35 too - at 4671mm, it's 262mm longer; it's 38mm wider at 1859mm; but it's 25mm less tall at 1630mm. Interior space is due to grow, as the wheelbase has stretched by 150mm.

The Nexo will be available in select markets from early 2018, although a Hyundai spokesman said that UK cars may not arrive until the end of the year.

It will also be Hyundai's first test of fully autonomous systems because the car's powertrain is ideal for coping with the high energy demand of autonomous systems – their data handling, communication and sensors – and it has a long range.

These systems include a next-generation Blind Spot Monitor, which demonstrates to the driver their position in relation to other road users, and Lane Following Assist (LFA) and Highway Driving Assist. The former can steer, accelerate and brake the car at speeds from standstill to 90mph. The latter uses map data and builds on LFA to control the car's speed according to the the speed limit of the road, as well as using sensors to detect environmental conditions. The Nexo is also fitted with a remote parking system, enabling the car to park itself with or without a driver aboard.

The model's unveiling comes shortly after Hyundai’s announcement that its first fully autonomous car will arrive in 2021, as a result of the brand's partnership with self-driving technology company Aurora.

Aurora will assist Hyundai in bringing the two brands' technologies to market as quickly and safely as possible, with Level 4 autonomy targeted. Work on the back-end development of the technologies has already begun.

At last year's CES, Hyundai showcased the Ioniq Autonomous, the first tangible product in its push for driverless motoring.

The design of the car draws heavily from the FE Fuel Cell Concept shown at the Geneva motor show last year. It's likely to closely match the price of the ix35 Fuel Cell, which started at £53,105.

Hyundai reveals all-new hydrogen-powered car

This is the first of Hyundai’s second-generation fuel-cell electric vehicles, revealed this week at the Consumer Electronics Show, and powered by a comprehensively upgraded version of the fuel-cell used in the iX35 FCEV.

The Nexo is Hyundai’s first car designed from the ground up for fuel-cell power, which makes it lighter, quicker, more efficient and more spacious inside than one adapted from a combustion-engined design.

It’ll be released in selected markets around the world (where hydrogen refuelling stations are already available, obviously, which pretty well rules out South Africa, with exactly one for the whole country) as the technological flagship of the company’s eco-friendly range (Hyundai has promised 18 low-emission models by 2025) and features a raft of new and upgraded driver aids.


But first - the powertrain: The Nexo’s fuel-cell stack is lighter and more compact than that of the iX35 FCEV, but delivers almost as much power - 95kW versus 100kW. The electric motor it supplies, however, produces 20 percent more - 120kW versus 100kW, thanks to a 40kWh battery (up from 24kWh) and a lot more torque (395Nm versus 300).

Peak acceleration, says Hyundai, is 25 percent sharper than with the iX35 Fuel Cell. But more importantly, the Nexo has an estimated range of 800km on a full tank, compared to the iX35 Fuel Cell’s 590km.


Hyundai has put a lot of work into the cooling system; the Nexo is capable of cold starts within 30 seconds of turning the key (which the maker claims as best in class) warms up quicker than its predecessor and can cope with ambient temperatures of 50 degrees.

It can be refuelled from empty using new, lighter hydrogen tanks and, as an added bonus, all the moving parts are inside what used to be called the engine compartment, so a modicum of sound-deadening material in a concentrated area gives an impressively quiet ride.

Gizmotronics

At first glance there’s not much new about the Nexo’s driver aids, but in every case Hyundai has upped the ante with fresh developments

The blind spot monitor shows the rear and side views on both sides when changing lanes, using wide angle surround view cameras, on a centre screen.

Lane following assist - a new technology for Hyundai - automatically adjusts the steering to help keep the car centred in its lane, on both highways and city streets, at up 140km/h. In conjunction with highway driving assist, which utilises sensors and map data to automatically adjust speed in limited environments, it functions as a safety aid, rather than as a partially autonomous driving system.

Hyundai Nexo fuel cell SUV to go on sale in early 2019

£65,000-plus price tag is expected for the brand's second hydrogen-powered car – it's bigger than the previous ix35 Fuel Cell

Hyundai has revealed more information about the Nexo fuel cell car shown at CES earlier in the month. The Nexo will go on sale in the UK in right-hand-drive form early in 2019.

The FCEV is based on Hyundai’s new FUV (future utility vehicle) platform and represents a step up in technical sophistication from the previous ix35, as well as a clean-sheet design, both inside and out. Fuel cell system efficiency has been improved and now stands at 60%, which Hyundai claims is the best ever achieved for a fuel cell vehicle. Fuel cells don’t burn hydrogen but split the molecules to produce electricity with only water and heat as by-products. The system incorporates a small lithium ion buffer battery to provide the fast response needed for acceleration.

Hyundai debuts world's first self-driving fuel cell EV

A fleet of Hyundai Motor Company’s next generation fuel cell electric vehicles have succeeded in completing a self-driven 118 mile journey from Seoul to Pyeongchang. This is the first time in the world that level 4 autonomous driving has been achieved with fuel cell electric vehicles.

Until now, autonomous driving has been demonstrated only on selected sections of Korean domestic roads and at a limited speed, this is the first time autonomous vehicles have operated on public highways at 110km/h, the maximum speed allowed by law on Korean highways.

Three Hyundai vehicles completed the journey, all based on NEXO, Hyundai’s next-generation fuel cell electric vehicle which is scheduled to be released in Korea next month. All vehicles were equipped with level 4 self-driving technology, as defined by the SAE international standards and equipped with 5G network technology.

The demonstration took place in Seoul on Feb 2nd, with the 'CRUISE' and 'SET' buttons being pressed on the autonomous-driving steering wheel of each vehicle, at which point the cars immediately switched to self-driving mode and began the 118 mile journey to Pyeongchang. Entering the highway, the vehicles moved in response to the natural flow of traffic, executed lane changes, overtaking manoeuvres and navigated toll gates using Hi-pass, South-Korea’s wireless expressway payment system.

Building on the successful demonstration of Hyundai’s vehicles which drove autonomously in Las Vegas during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) early last year, the cars feature a number of advanced technologies that enable them to recognise surrounding vehicles more accurately and make better judgements at junctions and navigate through toll gates by accurately calculating the toll gate’s width and position. The vehicles are also able to pinpoint their position on a map by using external sensors fitted for situations when the GPS signal was interrupted, such as going through

Hyundai has conducted a significant number of highway test drives amounting to hundreds of thousands of miles travelled, which has enabled the accumulation of data to enhance the performance of its self-driving vehicles. Jinwoo Lee, Head of the Intelligent Safety Technology Centre at Hyundai Motor Group said: “Hyundai’s philosophy for developing autonomous driving technology is to provide the highest level of safety combined with a high standard of convenience that our customers expect,”

The exterior and interior of self-driving vehicles used for this demonstration look similar to Hyundai’s other mass-produced models but are installed with additional cameras and LIDARs. Adding a small number of sensors to mass produced vehicles has enabled the realization of fully autonomous driving technology, bringing Hyundai closer to the commercialisation of self-driving technology.

During autonomous driving, a high volume of data is processed by the vehicles on board systems, necessitating large power consumption. A fuel cell electric vehicle is able to produce electricity to meet this power consumption, as well as powering the vehicles drive systems, through a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen in the fuel cell stack, with the only tail pipe emission being water vapour, making it the optimal vehicle model choice for this test. The vehicle chosen for this test was NEXO, Hyundai’s next generation fuel cell electric vehicle, which has a target range of 500 miles (NEDC) on a single charge of hydrogen and takes only five minutes to refuel. NEXO boasts world-class system efficiency of 60%, durability equivalent to internal combustion engine-driven vehicles and a load space of 839 litres.

Connectivity Enhanced Infotainment System:

Utilising the 5G network of KT Corp., a Korean mobile service provider, the test vehicles deliver five new advanced information technologies, all accessed through a user interface (UI) that provides an intuitive user experience.

Passengers in the rear seats can use “Home Connect,” a car-to-home technology which enables the user to access and control “Internet of Things” (IoT) devices installed in their smart home. They can view home camera images in real-time, control the lighting, remote door lock, control television, and even manage home energy systems.

“Assistant Chat” is a technology that allows users to ask questions to a Chat Bot with simple voice commands and receive answers in the form of text or images.

“Wellness Care” can monitor health information of passengers seated in the rear of the vehicle, such as their stress level, heart rate, and mood state. They can also access relaxing therapeutic services and connect with a health consultant through a real-time video call.

In addition, the vehicle also provides “Noise-Away” cabin noise reduction technology and “Mood Care” which provides rear door mood lighting when the music player or Wellness Care is active.

Lastly, users can receive real-time traffic information notifications, supported by multiple languages, including Korean, English and Chinese.

Hyundai Motor Group is preparing for the commercialisation of the SAE standard Level 4 compliant autonomous-driving system in smart cities by 2021. To this end, the company announced plans at CES 2018 last month to jointly develop self- driving technology with Aurora Innovation; a U.S. based autonomous driving start-up. Hyundai plans to commercialise the technology for fully autonomous driving by 2030.

Furthermore, since August last year, Hyundai has been researching and building its V2X infrastructure. As a founding member of the American Centre for Mobility, an American research institute for future mobility, Hyundai Motor Group last October invested 5 million dollars in the ACM-led construction of state-of-the-art testing facilities.

Should I buy one?

Keen drivers will find the Nero’s manners a bit appliance-like – its handling is inspiration-free, the low-roll ride often stiff-legged – but this is a car that intrigues on many levels, besides offering zero-emission karma. It also looks good, and provides an interior that, while overly plastic in parts, mixes elegance with pleasing flourishes.

The Nexo isn’t cheap – it will likely cost around £60,000 – and the lack of an extensive refuelling network means this isn’t your typical high-tech automotive totem. But if you want a slice of tomorrow today, live in the south-east and fancy a car that actually cleans the air, the Nexo makes a boldly interesting choice.

I would imagine that you would have some sort of hydrogen generator at home, that can generate the "fuel" and store it. Hyundai will also have hydrogen refueling points at service stations if they plan on selling these in the near future.
