The grass is slightly greener on the other side

Basically: Buying data in USA gets you a better deal than in South Africa.

I am no enlightened.

And the US is probably the worst benchmark as it's still exorbitant over there as well so even if we get down to their levels it's still too expensive.

Not exactly 100% accurate. Eg. Verizon doesn’t cap you when you reach your 10GB - it throttles you to 128kbps and should you have more than one account the second and extra accounts are 30% less per account. Plus there are plenty of better offers other than those two including virtual operators etc.

I have my doubts as to the authenticity of the trip, and tests

Context: I travel to the USA once a month for between 1 and 2 weeks.

T-Mobile Prepaid Plan

$3 per month gets me 30 minutes and 30 text messages
$10 per week gets me 1GB of 4G data, and unlimited 3G data

On the odd occasion, I stay in the USA for 3 weeks and temporarily migrate to a $40 plan which gives me:

- unlimited talk
- unlimited text
- 10GB 4G data, unlimitewd 3G data

All plans include hotspotting.

On other networks, monthly postpaid plans include hotspotting.

Slightly is an understatement.

Europe side: 16gigs data roaming across entire Europe...300zar

In SA that barely gets you a decent gig or two

In South Africa the normal data rates (not prepaid bundles) are like 100 Euro a Gig! Is that right?

Depending on the bundle size, but 1 gig on it's own is anything from R58 to R150+ (?), monthly.
Daily and weekly bundles are cheaper.

1 Euro = about 15 Rand

Why not include telkom's 10gb for R399 which includes calls and texts? It goes without saying that the grass would be greener other side when comparing to vodacom and mtn.

ZA:
R100 a month gets me 300 sms messages, 300 minutes talktime (split 100 Telkom landline, 100 Telkom mobile & 100 other networks) and 1Gb of data.

That's the equivalent of $8-05.

My current S8 contract with Vodafone gives me unlimited UK minutes and texts, and 16GB of data. All bundle options carry over for European roaming for free, and for £6 a day if used outside the free roaming zone. Total monthly cost is £48 (about R800-ish)

Why would they need to send someone all the way to the USA to go and buy a prepaid sim card?

Hehehe data won't fall. On another note I find it easier and more flexible to get online in SA compared to the USA. SA prepaid seems more flexible and visitor friendly

You're obviously doing something wrong or have never been to the USA.

Walked into a Vodashop last Saturday.

Me: "Hi, how're you? I'm in SA for two weeks and would like a SIM card please."

Guy: "We need proof of address."

Me: "I don't live in SA, and only here for 2 weeks. I don't have proof of address. Here's my passport."

Guy: blank look.

Me: "Ok, let me go speak to that guy over there instead, thanks for your help."

The other guy sorted me out in a few minutes. I guess it's only easy in SA if you speak to the right people.

$8 a Gig. Not bad. But is it available country wide? A quick google and I see that Telkom Mobile is limited to major cities only. Is that correct? Can the offer be used on roaming too? AFAIK South Africa is very limited when it comes to roaming between networks.

Defaults to MTN if no TM coverage, so where there is MTN coverage you're good to go. In some instances (farm in middle of the Free State) I've locked my phone to MTN with no problems.
