Combo number 5.

Opel Combo Life

Opel is continuing its ongoing product offensive by launching a true all-rounder with the new Opel Combo Life, a wonderful family car full of innovations that makes everything possible. The fifth-generation Combo is based on a new architecture. It is immensely spacious, highly practical and versatile, equipped with one or two rear sliding doors and can be ordered as a short (4.40 metres) or long (4.75 metres) version and as a five or seven seater. With the new Opel Combo Life, you will be the hero of your local sports team when taking an entire seven-a-side team plus sports apparel to the next match. Your planned family "extensions" can relax on three individual rear seats all with Isofix child seat brackets and enjoy a wonderful view of the sky thanks to the panoramic roof. And your friends will also love the outstanding spaciousness and ask whether they can borrow your new Opel Combo Life for their trips to nearest Swedish furniture store.

However, more strikingly the new Opel Combo Life raises the bar in terms of technical ambition in this segment and takes the level of safety and comfort to a new dimension. It is fitted with technologies and driver assistance systems well-known from the compact or SUV segment such as Driver Drowsiness Alert, Rear View Camera with 180° bird's-eye view, Head up display, IntelliGrip, and comfort features such as heated seats and a heated leather steering wheel. One of the newcomers to the Opel portfolio of assistance systems is Flank Guard. It supports drivers when turning at low speeds. And on top of that the new Opel Combo Life is also pleasant on the eye thanks to bold proportions giving a strong and robust appearance.

"The new Opel Combo Life is a key vehicle in our product offensive. Our newcomer will definitely appeal to families with its versatility and spaciousness combined with an outstanding offer of ultra-modern driver assistance systems that make driving safer and travelling more enjoyable," said Opel CEO Michael Lohscheller. "This car has a huge potential to grow the brand and gives us the opportunity to attack the important small van segment with new vigour."

So far Opel's infortainment systems UI looks really nice now that they are under PSA

So, rather than locating the side indicator repeaters units on one of the two readily available areas (indicated by arrows) - the black plastic trim moulding finisher located on the A-pillar, ahead of the mirrors - or even better, on the actual mirror housings themselves, like 99.9% of most modern cars, Opel's design team decided that the BEST 'aesthetically pleasing & neutral' place to insert them was using 1990's retro 'CitiGolf' lenses - glaringly placed INSIDE the front mudguard contour arches, totally spoiling the look thereof with these two 'hideous pimple blemishes' on the otherwise smooth front flanks.

New Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo LCVs revealed

The PSA Group has revealed new versions of the Peugeot Partner, Opel Combo and Citroën Berlingo, with all three vans sharing a platform that allows long and short wheelbases.

Here, we’ll focus on the first two, as Citroën is no longer active in South Africa.

As standard, both the Partner and Combo measure 4 440 mm long. Of this, 1 810 mm is usable for cargo and can hold up to 3 800 dm3. Opting for the longer 4 750 mm variant pushes the usable length up to 2 160 mm, which in turn raises the capacity to 4 440 dm3.

Both van ranges feature an extensive range of turbopetrol and turbodiesel engines, including the 1,2-litre PureTech 110ch and 130ch petrol options and the BlueHDi 75ch, 100ch and 130ch turbodiesels in the case of the Peugeot.

The Puretech 110ch turbocharged petrol engine and BlueHDi 130ch are each fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the 75ch and 100ch turbodiesels get the five-speed. An eight-speed automatic torque converter will be available on the PureTec 130ch and optional on the BlueHDi 130ch. These engine configurations have been confirmed for the Peugeot Partner; options for the Opel Combo have yet to be detailed.

The Partner also gains added features such as “comfort” seats, a reversing camera, an electric parking brake, a touchscreen infotainment system and automatic headlamps and wipers. Listed safety features for the Combo include forward collision alert with pedestrian detection and emergency braking, lane keep assist, hiss decent control, adaptive cruise control, driver drowsiness alert and speed sign recognition.

The LCVs will be available in initial markets by the end of the third quarter. Plans for an introduction into the local market have yet to be announced.

Vauxhall Combo Life 1.5 Energy 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

If you’re committed to practicality over design flair, this van-derived people carrier makes a strong case for itself. The Combo has styling more restrained than Citroen’s Berlingo, and gives off less of a crossover vibe than the Peugeot Rifter.
Anyone considering an MPV is largely doing so because they need the space they provide, and as such can expect to be driving with a full load a lot of the time. That may be asking a lot from the entry-level engine, suggesting another model is probably the highlight of the range.
You do sacrifice the kind of driver engagement and kerb appeal you might find in a similarly-sized SUV, but the Vauxhall beats almost all of them on price. It also looks to be better value than its PSA cousins - even if it doesn’t have quite the same presence on the road.

Opel expands their SUV and commercial line-up with the SA-bound Combo range

Opel has announced that their range of Combo commercial vehicles will be brought to South Africa in early 2019.

And, as if that wasn’t good enough news, the Opel Combo Cargo has received the coveted IVOTY (International Van of the Year) Award.

A new generation

Each with its own personality - while offering a similar level of practicality.

After unveiling the family-oriented Opel Combo Life recently, the PSA Group subsequently also introduced its commercial counterpart – the Opel Combo Cargo.

This award-winning light commercial vehicle is embracing a new generation of Opel vehicles, introducing some all-new design changes inside and out, along with more practicality than ever before.

The Opel Combo Life, on the other hand, is being described as 'the family’s best friend' thanks to a spacious cabin and a high level of flexibility. Indeed, you can have it with five or even seven seats, one or two rear sliding doors, and with a choice between short (4.40m) and long (4.75m) lengths.

The new Opel Combo Vans were designed as part of a cross-business programme in which services were systematically tailored as closely as possible to the needs of business customers in terms of convenience, driving assistance systems and safety.

Compliance and safety

Jarlath Sweeney, chairman of the IVOTY jury, described the new Opel line-up as "the most significant small panel van development in years".

"The Opel Combo is well future-proofed, packed with technological advancements to aid the driver and offers substantial financial benefits to the owner or fleet manager. The creation of its new ‘overload alert system’ is a great initiative, as it will ensure compliance and enhance safety.

The availability of two wheelbase versions is another step forward, as is the introduction of an all-wheel-drive variant, considering that an increasing number of utility companies are looking for 4x4 traction in a smaller van. All in all, an excellent package, well put together," Sweeney added.

The new models were developed using the EMP2 platform and accommodate the latest generation of powertrains and driver assistance equipment. They offer a range of services for business/commercial customers, meeting the highest standards on the market in terms of spaciousness and modularity, including a load capacity of 1 000kg.

To cover all customer needs, the vans will come in two lengths and will be available in 2-, 3- and 5- seater versions. With each generation, Groupe PSA has brought useful and major innovations to the segment, now proposing two technologies that are unique on the market: the ‘overload indicator’ and ‘surround rear vision.’

With this new offering, Groupe PSA intends to consolidate its already leading position in the European commercial vehicle market.

Opel is one of the oldest car brands operating in Southern Africa, and the brand has built a solid reputation over the 80+ years that it has been in the country.

The South African Motoring Guild voted the new Astra as the SA 'Car of the Year for 2017' after it was awarded 'Car of the Year' in 12 European countries, as well as 'Overall European Car of the Year'.

The brand won the prestigious 'Car of the Year' award in SA on few previous occasions as well – in 1991 (Monza), in 1994 (Kadett) and in 1995 (Astra). The cars are known for offering luxury-level specifications that pack stamps a German engineered punch high above their price category – hence the brand’s pay-off line: "The Future is Everyone’s."

Opel announces SA dates for new Combo, introduces AWD variant

Opel has announced that its Combo commercial vehicle, on which CARmag reported when it was revealed in June, will arrive on South African shores as early as March next year.

Built on the PSA group’s EMP2 platform (the same platform underpinning the Peugeot Partner and Citroën Berlingo), the Combo will be available to the South African market in both short and long guise. According to Opel, the shorter variant, with a length of 4 400 mm, will have a maximum utility space of 3 800 litres, while up to 4 440 litres will be available in the longer (4 750 mm) model. The Combo will be offered in two, five and seven-seaters. And buyers will be able to specify this model with one or two sliding doors.

Furthermore, the Russelheim-based brand has fitted this model with an ‘overload indicator’ to ensure its 1-ton loading capacity is not exceeded. And to ease parking, the Combo is equipped with ‘surround rear vision’.

The German automaker has also introduced an all-wheel-drive derivative in this model range.

According to Opel, its new vans are developed “as part of a cross-business programme in which services were systematically tailored as closely as possible to fit its customers’ needs – with each Cargo model having “its own personality” while “offering similar levels of practicality”.

Opel's International Van of the Year now SA-bound

Opel will release its new Combo range of small panel vans in South Africa in March 2019, in both family-friendly Combo Life and commercial Combo Cargo formats.

The Combo is a sister model to the Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Rifter and Partner, sharing the PSA Group’s EMP2 platform, and comes in a choice of two lengths - 4400mm and 4750mm overall - with a comprehensive suite of driver aids including ‘surround rear vision’ and an overload indicator system.

It’s available in Europe with a choice of 1.5-litre turbodiesel or 1.2 turbopetrol fours, driving the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. There’s even a 4x4 version, although we’re not sure whether that will be made available in our market.

The 1.5-litre Turbo D is also offered in two tunings: the 100PS version is rated for 74kW at 3500 revs and 250Nm at 1750, while the 130PS version delivers a claimed 96kW at 3750 revs and 300Nm at 1750rpm.

The direct-injection 110PS turbopetrol is rated for 83kW at 5500 revs and 205Nm at 1750rpm; a more highly tuned 130PS (96kW) version will be available from the first half of 2019. The engine line-up for South Africa, however, has yet to be finalised.

Be that as it may, the Combo Life will be available in both lengths, with either five or seven seats, and your choice of one or two rear sliding doors. The standard length five-seat model has a 597 litre cargo bay, which more than triples to 2126 litres with the rear seats folded flat, while the long-wheelbase model will swallow 850 litres of retail therapy - or a whopping 2693 litres with the rear seats folded.

International Van of the Year

The Combo Cargo - the 2019 international Van of the Year - comes with your choice of two, three or five seats and is rated to carry a full ton; it’s also available in short and long-wheelbase versions. As a two or three-seater, even the standard model will take two standard Euro pallets; the long-wheelbase version offers up to 4.4 cubic metres of payload space, with a load length of up to 3440mm.

Pricing! Opel Combo cargo van hits SA in 'limited numbers'.

The Opel Combo has arrived in South Africa in two wheelbase configurations, with the local arm of the German firm saying it will import the van “initially in limited numbers because of international demand”.

Power comes from a 1,6-litre turbodiesel engine, which sends 68 kW and 230 N.m to the front axle via a five-speed manual gearbox.

The standard model measures 4 403 mm in length, while the long-wheelbase variant comes in at 4 753 mm. The claimed payload is 600 kg for the former and 1 000 kg for the latter, while the braked towing capacity is rated at 1 250 kg and 850 kg, respectively.

The Combo van’s standard features list includes two airbags, hill-start assist, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, air-conditioning, a four-speaker audio system, remote central locking, rear interior electronic door lock, an alarm and an anti-theft immobiliser.

Pricing:

Opel Combo Life (and Zafira Life) confirmed for South Africa

Opel South Africa has confirmed it plans to introduce the Combo Life people-mover to the local market in the third quarter of 2019, with the larger Zafira Life expected to join the range in 2020.

The five-seater Combo Life is, of course, closely related to the Combo cargo van that arrived on local shores in April 2019.

Like that commercial model, the SA-spec Combo Life will be powered by a 1,6-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine worth 68 kW and 230 N.m. Opel SA claims a combined fuel consumption of 5,0 L/100 km (we suspect a five-speed manual will ship standard).

Drop the 60/40 rear bench and the German firm says the Combo Life will happily handle up to 690 kg. Braked towing capacity, meanwhile, comes in at 1 100 kg (with an unbraked figure of 720 kg).
