IP68 does not mean you can go swimming with your smartphone

People need to learn the difference between water resistant and water proof
 
Although i'm an Apple fanboi, I once decided to wonder to the Android side for a while to see what all the fuss is about. I got a Samsung S7 Edge - rated at up to 30mins and 1.5m under water. Its the one they also advertise in their shops going in and out of water..

I went into a (cold) jacuzzi with no jets on and sat for about 5mins before realising it was in my shorts pocket.

I took it out - the screen was Green and nothing worked. After drying it out for 3 days it would come on but randomly just reboot while I was using it. Long story short it was whisked away for recycling after an insurance claim.

I then ventured to a Sony xPeria Z5 Premium - also waterproof. Dunked that baby into pools, jacuzzi's you name it. It worked like a bomb. Gave it a family member later on and its still going fine.

I'm back to my trusty iPhones now and my iPhone 8 has had a good few swims and its also fine.

Guess what brand i'll never touch again with a barge pole :)

If you wanted a Samsung to work like a bomb you should have gotten a note 7
 
I've gotten Vodacom/Sony South Africa to successfully replace an Xperia M4 that was IP68-rated and had water damage. Water creeped inside the casing, cracked the camera lens, and caused random reboots. The water's depth was less than 30mm deep.

I got them to fix the same phone twice before they relented with a replacement Xperia M5, which is most definitely not waterproof because the casing's glue wasn't replace by whoever refurbished it.

Currently quite happy with an S7 that goes everywhere with me.

My SO knocked over a glass of water on my S7 while it was charging. I woke up to the phone's usb port soaked and the phone not charged. It took a week or so, but once it dried out, it was working perfectly. In the meantime I could only charge it with wireless charging :D
 
I'm surprised to hear a Sony getting damaged with water.

Seems maybe its not only a case of brand but how its used under water or how it got wet. I dont know

And for the record I DO NOT WEAR SPEEDOS.
 
As far as I am aware, in the cellular trade IP67 is neither thought of as splash or waterproof. IP68 is splash-proof but only IP69K is considered as waterproof.

Earpiece opening, ringer opening and usually the charger socket will fail IP67 & IP68 with direct water pressure.

This was during the period where Sony had no idea how to properly cool down a phone, and the M4 Aqua had a reputation for overheating or getting overtly warm. Well, one side effect is that the glue holding the phone's back in place might suffer extra wear.

Hot water makes a big difference...
