We’ve known about the device for a few weeks now, but the Xiaomi Mi 6X has finally been revealed by the Chinese manufacturer.

Those hoping for a much more powerful device are in luck, as the phone packs a Snapdragon 660 that should make for a notable speed upgrade over the Mi A1’s Snapdragon 625 chipset. But expect battery capacity to stay in the same ballpark, as we’ve got a 3010mAh pack with Quick Charge 3.0 here.

In the camera department, you’ll find a 20MP+12MP f/1.75 dual camera layout (IMX376 and IMX486 respectively), enabling portrait mode shots. The 20MP camera also sports pixel-binning tech of sorts, essentially combining four pixels into a two micron pixel. But Xiaomi is touting AI-powered scene recognition as well, claiming the ability to recognise dozens of scenes, objects, and subjects. A 20MP camera (IMX376) handles selfie duties.

As for other noteworthy features, we’ve got a 6-inch 18:9 display, rear fingerprint scanner, IR blaster and a USB Type C port. A quick look at both the top and bottom of the phone shows no headphone jack, so you’d better get used to Bluetooth or an adapter. Xiaomi is also touting 7.6mm thickness here, which actually seems slightly thicker than the Mi 5X/Mi A1.

The Mi 6X launches on April 27 at 1,599 yuan (~$253) for the 4GB RAM+64GB storage variant, 1,799 yuan (~$285) for the 6GB+64GB model, and 1,999 yuan (~$316) for the top-end 6GB+128GB device.

If last year’s phone was any indicator, then we can expect the Mi 6X to launch outside China as the Android One-toting Mi A2.

This looks like a worthy successor to the 5x/A1

Great improvements IMHO and still comes in around $250 for the 4/64 model. Even better at $300 for the 6/64 Variant.

Considering the competition - these are the big drawcards:

- SD 660 (this is basically flagship level performance)
- 6' screen with 18:9 (In fashion size at the moment)
- USB type C
- Quick Charge 3.0
- Better cameras + AI
- Android One will be a big selling point.

The only negatives IMO are:

- lack of Headphone Jack (we are being dragged into the future, like it or not)
- small-ish battery (but that SD660 is quite efficient so this shouldnt be a factor)

Lets wait for the reviews and the actual MI A2 - Android One version. But I reckon that this will eat up the Nokia 6 and 7 plus, P20 lite, Honor 9 lite, Galaxy A8, etc.

No reason to pay the premium for those for the last couple of years yet people still do...

I hear you, if MIA pricing is anything to go by, if they stock it it would cost around R5-R6K, but probably closer to R3500 - R4000 via Gearbest.

My statement was based though on the USD known prices for the devices.
in the case of...
P20 lite - $400
Nokia 7 - $400

And then...
The Honor 7x and 9 lite are $200 but sell locally for around R5K and R4K respectively (dont ask me why).

How much did your A1 work out to (total cost)?

Just like with Windows 7, the future may be coming whether I like it or not, but a 3.5mm is still a dealbreaker for me.

My guess is that my red Mi A1 will still be current for some time as they only released it towards the end of the 3rd quarter last year and will likely do the same with A2.

No doubt that the Mi A1 will remain relevant. Android One promises 3 years of upgrades + monthly patches.
That alone is a huge draw card and more than some top brands can manage.

I think the A2 will launch sooner than Q3 - remember Xiaomi was embarrassed when they had to take down a twitter poll asking if users prefered stock android to MIUI.

It seems that Xiaomi really does listen to consumers, the specs on the x6 prove it.

While the Mi A1 offers crazy bang for the buck, i cant help but think that the A2 will be the one Mid-ranger that will rule them all. Especially in india which is xiaomi's largest market outside of China.

Yup- just ordered another for a friend :)

Shipping Cost: $10.16 to South Africa Via Priority Line -> I think that ends up being Aramex (at least it was last time).

For the latest order, it's listed as

Deliveries: Middle East Express

nice; do you have a view on cases / screen protectors -- have you ordered these from gearbest too?

Little annoying you have to pay separate shipping charges for these -- different warehouse -- but I haven't seen too many local places selling cases / protectors.

I ordered a couple from Ali Express, but they take too long to get here.

I'm using this currently, I like it: https://www.zasttra.com/products/le...act-protection-case-black?variant=38231382161

Worth the extra to get it on time :)

Look for 5x cases too- they're the same.
