The draft "rules for registration of small-scale embedded generation" (PDF) leave no room for exceptions. Any form of power generator of any size will have to formally registered, "eg PV/wind/biogas/diesel/fuel cell, generation".

The rules apply both to off-grid systems, with no connection to the national electricity system, and systems connected to the grid in any way – whether or not they are intended to feed electricity back into the grid.

Failure to register may be unlawful all by itself, but will also preclude the user from being connected to "the distribution system" of electricity, or a municipal grid.

So we should register every UPS in the factory as well?

No, I'm sorry, generating my own power on my private property from sunshine with my own solar panels is absolutely none of their business. They can go jump.

Arthur lsheed_cn, aren't you guys completely off-grid? Might want to take a look at this.

And the point of this? I predict some form of generation tax.

The point is so that we can have the highest number of power stations in the world!! :p Airports, stadiums, large hospitals would all require more than 1MW backup capacity and therefore would need to become fully licensed power stations, it will be hilarious seeing them try to jump through all the hoops

Remember people,

Our tax money hard at work paying the salary of the person that thought of this??

They are looking for something else to tax.

Fix your grid so I don't need a generator.

What will it cost to register ? Then an Annual re-register fee ? What if I don't register ? How will they notice my small gennie operating from my backyard ? How will who ever is in charge of the paperwork get the job done ?

Pffft...... Bunch of fcktards.

haha...first the fk up the power grid then they try to control those deciding to do their own thing

You will need to supply your ID and Licence to buy a new one?

Every form of home electricity generation – including solar photo-voltaic (PV) panels and backup generators – will have to be registered with the government under draft rules published by the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa) for public comment.

The draft "rules for registration of small-scale embedded generation" (PDF) leave no room for exceptions. Any form of power generator of any size will have to formally registered, "eg PV/wind/biogas/diesel/fuel cell, generation".

What do they define as home generation? For example, the electricity generated by my solar panel for the electric fence is technically home generation. Ditto for the solar panel on my calculator and the 12V supply on my car.

If these regulations go through everyone should register every battery they have in their house with the government.

Awesome..

Do I need to register each individual generating platform... since I have about 50 solar lights that are all independent of each other..

The only way this really gets stopped is by following the rules strictly and overloading these fscktards with so much paperwork that they give up.

Seems like government is realising more and more people are going to go off grid as it will soon become cheaper to do so than to use Eskom's power grid. They see all the pounds going down the drain and they need to get a slice of that cake before it's too late.
