Meteorites rock North West

At least two meteorites are understood to have fallen in North West on Saturday night.

People claimed on social media to have seen at least two bright fireballs striking the province shortly before 7pm on Saturday.

A local farmer near Ottosdal in North West‚ Barend Swanepoel‚ shared CCTV footage on Facebook of what appeared to be a meteorite hitting the earth at 6:49pm.

According to the Suburban Control Centre as saying one meteorite had fallen between Lichtenburg and Mahikeng‚ and that the one in the video had fallen between Hartebeesfontein and Coligny‚ eNCA reported.

Nice footage.

Reminds me of the one I saw that landed near Patensie a few years ago. The entire sky turned purple as a streak of light flashed across from east to west. But it appeared a lot faster than this one did, and was over nearly instantly.

That area is not called STELLAland for nothing -- there is even a little town -- now in the news with the name STELLA !
 
So I wonder if there will be another "investigation" on the cards to waste time and money.

We had it for lightning , we may need one for this. :)

The Eta Aquarids is one of the best meteor showers to watch with the naked eye in Southern Africa.

Their name comes from the nearest star in the vicinity of where they appear to be coming from (but they aren't coming from that star, just that patch of sky).

They usually peak in the first week of May or so, and the next shower (the Delta Aquarids) is not due until...July, if I've got it right?

So if these 2 were a part of the Eta Aquarids, they've shown up pretty late. Or they could just be random bloody great meteors, such as we wished would win the US election in 2016.

One of my sorceror builds has both High Levin and High Bolide though I was not in the vicinity at the time.
